Pay it forward
Link | by S-a-c-h-i-e-l on 2006-09-28 08:08:58 (edited 2006-09-29 22:59:32)
Pay it forward or paying it forward refers to repaying the good deeds one has received by doing good things for other unrelated people.

The phrase "pay it forward" as a moral philosophy first appeared in Catherine Ryan Hyde's novel Pay It Forward and in 2000 it was adapted into a Warner Brothers film, Pay It Forward. In the book and movie it is described as an obligation to do three good deeds for others in repayment of a good deed that one receives, and that such good deeds should be things that the person cannot accomplish on their own. The recipient of such acts of kindness is then expected to do three good deeds for others in repayment for the help they have received. In this way, the need to help each other can spread exponentially through society, creating a social movement with the hopes of making the world a better place.

In practice the philosophy of pay it forward has broadened relative to its literary roots, and now it incorporates a more general flavor of social responsibility and desire to help others in recognition of the help one has received for one's self. It is also sometimes described as being "good for a favor", meaning a willingness to help others (even strangers) on the expectation that it will all come back around in the end.

The idea of the book has been championed in real life by the Pay It Forward Foundation. The Foundation focuses on bringing the idea of paying it forward to school age children, parents, and educators. The simple idea of doing good works for others to repay the good that has happened to you is one that can easily be conveyed to children and encourages them to be socially aware and take a role in making the world a better place. The main character of the book was a 12-year-old child, thus giving other children someone they can relate to.

Author Robert A. Heinlein preached and practiced this philosophy; now the Heinlein Society, a humanitarian organization founded in his name, does so.

In October 2005, Syracuse University's Residence Hall Association began a Pay It Forward Campaign on campus. It spread on campus rapidly, and was noted for entering mainstream Syracuse society as a result. Many other schools have now begun campaigns such as this as well.

THUS SAYETH THE WIKI.

So, who's up for paying it forward? It doesn't necessarily have to be big things, it could be giving someone a quarter when the thing they're buying was more expensive then they thought, it could be opening the door for someone in a wheelchair, helping your younger sibling with a computer they just got, anything.

It's a simple idea, yet an idea that could easily change the world. There's a book and movie on it, and that has done major good; but what the world needs is more of it. A few places have sprouted that encourage this idea, but if this happened in gendou.com, it'd reach to every corner of the earth and back!

So, who's willing to pay it forward? If you accept, I'll put your name in this post! XD

Those who will make effort to pay it forward:
S-a-c-h-i-e-l
Angel Yuki
Dragon Negro
Fratello
Kyari
Engineer
Kay
Desert Punk
Michiyo
Kei-kun

I was raised that way. I'd always know it as "what goes around, comes around."

Its just part of being a "good" person.

Like Engineer, it was the way I was raised.

Anymore, I prefer doing things that aren't necessarily noticeable. Like picking up trash if I'm walking, bringing a shopping cart someone left in the parking lot, etc. I do the "Johnny Appleseed" thing where I'll plant some seeds, too. Don't know if that counts, but I guess we all can contribute in our own way.

When you do something nice to them and say "pay it forward," they'll go like "?"

Then you can say "I p4yz j00 f0rw4rd, no\X/ j00 p4yz thr33 more forward!!1onez"
The reply: "?"

Then "j00 p4yz f0rw4rd b3h do1ng 1337 skillz and n1ce stufzp3riod"
Of course, they will be shocked by your 1337 skillz, and say "o i c"

Then thou hast sparked a flame that will PURGE THE EARTH OF ALL BOTTOM-FEEDERS AND B4CT3R14! Bwahaha, gendou.com: Changing the world one bottom-feeder at a time.

for dinner just now, my housemates and i had a big feast.i made sushi for them, one of them made fried rice, the other made potatoes, and some others brought fruits. we helped each other with cooking and shared our food, so i guess we're paying each other forward. it wasnt really some big nice deeds, but it was fun!^_^

Count on me... I'm up for it.

Imagine just for one second, how the world would change if this way of living and relating to people were more applied. So I'll totally give my hand in order to help this world of ours be a little better.

I think I'm not mistaken when I say that we all were raised this way, but the idea is to really get it into practice so we can see the difference, it is up to us... let's do this.

Kei-kun's space for stupid comments: Everything changes... we all have to move on
