I COULD get into the painful details, but from what rabbit said, that's not all true. The only painful part would be the tightening of the braces. That hurts like CRAP!!! but otherwise, the beginning should be a little painful. not too much because they SHOULD use anethstasia on ya...crap...can't spell today...still sleeeeepy... |

wish I coulda had an anethsteic when i got mine on, just take some motrin or advil about 30 minutes before you you leave, it'll help with the pain of the first night a bit. Dark's right about the tightening, but again pain killes do help this. you'll get used to them, but your food will have a lead like taste for the first week =D. |

ITS LIKE SOMEONE POKING AT YOUR EYE AND PICKING AT A THRID DEGREE BURN!!! Actually I have no idea, never had braces.....BUT, I have heard that it is painful afterwards. Not to bad getting it done. Just your mouth hurts, and the tightening sucks too. You live off of pudding, bananas, rice and potatoes.

allow me to describe. i've worn braces before... and my experience with them was really odd because i had to repeat them from two years to another two years because my first dentist even wrecked my teeth than make it better... anyhow, here's my chronicle. XD getting braces for the first time doesn't hurt AT ALL. it's not true that they feel like you're getting chopped up. they feel heavy. REALLY HEAVY. like you're carrying about 100 tons in your mouth for about three days. you can't exactly eat properly either BECAUSE OF THE WEIGHT. they may hurt a bit, but it's only because your teeth are getting used to how bloody heavy those alien thing are to your gums. after three or four days, you should have lost weight, drank lots of water, blendered your food to some pulpy goop to swollow, and gotten used to those metals. every month, or two months, or whatever duration your ortho asks you to return to have your braces tightened or adjusted, they might hurt. it's actually the adjustment times that they hurt, and not when they're new because your ortho shouldn't make your first time tight already. when he/she tightens them, it WILL hurt for two or three days, so expect it. this is because your teeth are being moved to the desired possition your ortho is moving them to make your teeth nicer. here's a tip: DRINK FRUIT SHAKES. aside from being healthy, the coldness will kinda lessen the pain, because they kinda swell for a whil, and lessening the swelling is a good thing. one more thing: you SHOULD be able to chew gum. if your ortho says you shouldn't, then there's something going on there. it is IMPORTANT to chew some gum after adjustments because it helps in regulating the flow and circulation of blood in your gums. the tightening of your braces is like a sudden shock for them. just think: they're muscles. what happens to muscles when you suddenly shock them by hitting them with a stick? you get bruises. so your need to help the blood get around it, right? your ring bands on every molar SHOULD NOT come off after eating gum. if this happens, tell your ortho. if this happens A LOT, transfer right away. your ring bands SHOULD NEVER: a) smell; b) come off; c) deform; and, d) break when chewing. NEVER. like i said, trust me in this. going through FOUR YEARS of braces, instead of just two, isn't fun at all. you don't want to double the length of time that you need to wear them just because your ortho didn't do it the right way. ^______^ i hope i helped! good luck with the braces! *hugglez* -michiyo- beware. the QueeN oF SiGGieS is here. kill that mr. scrolly or your siggy goes BAI BAI. it's solidarity month! let's be united! +[-- GeNDouNiaNS: i am half-back! visit my blog by clicking on the siggie banner! updated: 12.07.07 --]+

I have braces at the moment. It doesn't hurt, only three days after tightening. But the tightening itself doesn't hurt. What I hate most is that these things sometimes scratch your gums and other things. |

nope...haven't had any braces. i did considered getting one but the dentist told me not to cause one of my back tooth(the on the right) is too in (it touches my tongue when i closed my mouth) and its big (it's in between two teeth. the tooth goes quite in that it touches the tongue and it touches its neighboring teeth) not that good at explaining...maybe a drawing or a picture might help... |

I currently have braces, and as michiyo said, they feel heavy at first, and your lips feel like they are puckering out (but they're not...at least not a lot XD) and the tightening does hurt a lot at first, but you'll get used to it, and I agree you should take motrin or advil 30 minutes before your appointment. Also, make sure you have some wax because the metal will cut into your gums in some places when starting out...I'm not saying they'll make big holes in your lips, just cut a little bit, not that bad. One other thing, if you think tightening hurts, wait until you get bands (IF you get bands), I have three, and it hurts the most in my opinion, though I won't say how much...don't wanna scare you too much if I haven't already... XDDD But this much is for sure: you'll live. ^-^ Good luck! |

My tip to those who get braces on is to wear the freakin' retainer! Just because the braces aren't on anymore doesn't mean your teeth will stay that way if you leave them alone. They have to gradually set completely in place. Your teeth can pop back out of place if you don't wear that lisp-inducing piece of plastic. |

Bad expierences from dentist. I had one tooth operation. They were cutting my mouth for an hour. And then later they burned my palate with laser. And my breath stinked like burning meat for few days. And more smaller but nasty stuff. I have had the four different type of braces -.- The regular ones covering all my teeths xD And at the same time I had other braces in my palate. Two braces same time, not too fun. I had problems with my tongue. I used to cut it while eating :´D But that was just because I had so much iron wire in my mouth too =P They felt weird when I first got them, and when they took them off I felt even more weird! :3 But I don't remember too much the time with those braces, because it was more painfull when the dentists were tightening those wires in my mouth T.T I hope you won't get that much stuff in your mouth :P |

hey, look at the bright side: NO HEAD GEARS. ack~ boy was i glad i didn't get those things. XD neko neko... you needed to cut your... tongue? O_O oh, and wolf is so uber right. WEAR those bloody retainers. mine are starting to relapse, so now i wear them again. i feel really regretful for not wearing them. T_____T and tori's right too. i can't believe i missed that one. always keep a stock of wax! haha~ i have a lot here at home now because i always ask from my dentist. =P oh, and tori? at least yours is three. tried using two bands in one hook? times two? so that's FOUR. T_____T NOT good. -michiyo- beware. the QueeN oF SiGGieS is here. kill that mr. scrolly or your siggy goes BAI BAI. it's solidarity month! let's be united! +[-- GeNDouNiaNS: i am half-back! visit my blog by clicking on the siggie banner! updated: 12.07.07 --]+
