Deep anime?
|
Can anyone recommend me some deep anime? I especially like those, I don't mind blood and stuff. Anime like Evagalian, RaXephon, Wolf's Rain, Witch Hunter Robin, FMA would be nice. Perferably a sad ending please and not TOO much humour. Thanks I'll be waiting here. So if you come here, you'll find me... I promise. |

i rather thought saikano was pretty deep. and it had a really sad ending. ;_; also, gankutsuou, which is one of my all-time favorites. that's all i can think of for now. if i think of any more, i'll edit my post. |

I agree that FMA's got too much humour. When I watched it I was dissapointed cos I expected a deeper plot. @ achadr- Um... Chobits has too much humour, and I wouldn't really call that deep Thank you for the replies! Are there any others? I'll be waiting here. So if you come here, you'll find me... I promise. |

Very good deep anime that I have watched are... Wolf's Rain (Very cool and beautiful anime.) Texhnolyze (This is the most philosophical and deep anime I have ever seen) Elfen Lied (Touching and emotionally beautiful.) Trigun (It's got humor but once you watch all of it you will understand why. Good stuff, good stuff.) Chrono Crusade (A lesson in storytelling.)
You need a reason to be sad. You don't need a reason to be happy. The secret to happiness is to face the fact that the world is horrible.

ooo i also love wolf's rain. i would suggest chrono crusade. it's humerous at first...but it gets into some in depth and dark imagery. it is the best and most fantastic transition i have ever seen in a film. light to real darkness. it's truely a story that's worth watching...i was skeptical at first...but wow did this series prove me wrong. it'll def. drag u into its story. just absolutly amazing.

I'll also recommend Saikano and the Rurouni Kenshin movies. I didn't like Chrno Crusade, though -.-; I mean yeah, it touches on issues of self-sacrifice and such, but shows like Saikano and Evangelion are way better than that and that isn't even their focus. @Shasti: I do think Chobits WAS pretty deep - the story dives right into the philosophical viewpoints of what true love is and what it means as well as what makes a person human, whether or not a man-made object can be considered sentient, and so on and so forth. It's not a lesson in pain like Evangelion and it does have a sense of humor, but that doesn't mean it's not deep. That's my $0.02. Plus change. AKA Home-Dog Ass-Masta' The G-Unit |

speaking of Chrno Crusade, i think the manga version's much nicer than the anime. gonzo had really changed the plot a lot.

sawwiez seculi, but i beg to differ. Evangelion wasn't really that deep...i mean it touched on some religious issues...but seriously..it was rather not that deep. it was more about shinji...and basically he never even grows throughout the series. he still remains a kid who is sorry for himself. absolutely no character growth. it only gets good at the very end..and so many ppl were confused about the ending as well..i suppose it is open for interpretation. but honestly...there's no real indepth connection. and chobits is even worse.it's basically a simple series to watch..nothing more. but everyone has a right to his or her opinion. i just happen to think that chobits and evangelian are just series like cowboy bebop....a series that's entertaining...but really shows little character growth and not really an indepth storyline. but in chrono crusade u have major transitions, a really unique storyline, sense of identity, religious portral, etc... the most indepth evangelion gets is in the stream of consciousness ep. and those weren't even that good. they were rather boring. i rather read Beloved.

@shiroyuu: Oh, maybe the manga's better then. I only watched the anime :P @kaykay: I also beg to differ. Evangelion's main focus was "What gives man purpose in life?" More specifically, "If no one cared about anything I did, would there be a point to doing it?" "Is there a point in living only for myself?" "Is it my responsibility to do what others want regardless of my own desires, and why?" as well as much more deep and basic philosophical questions such as "What it consciousness?" and "What defines a person?" Moreover, while Chrno Crusade DID have nuns with guns, it never touched on any truly Christian issue. It borrowed some of the terms and dropped all the rest. Evangelion, on the other hand, made extensive use of Catholic mythology, Kabala and Nietzschean philosophy. Yes, the ending was hard to understand. But the choice was between dumbing the plot down, giving classes on Nietzsche, Kabala and psychology, or going for the gold. They could have kept everything understandable to everyone, but it would have been at the expense of depth. Rose had to ask questions like "Do I follow my life's purpose to find my brother and hurt everyone around me, or do I sacrifice myself for others' sake?" (At least I think so; in Christian mythology, which the show is supposed to be based on, demons and devils frequently display the power to overrule their victims' rational minds, so she might not have had to ask that after all) whereas Shinji had to ask "Do I sacrifice myself for people who don't care about me just because they're people, or do I live my life for myself?" Shinji's questions were much harder to ask and Rose's might not have been asked at all. Finally, character growth or change is only one of the many tools of writing such as plot and characters and should not be taken as an end in itself. Convoluted plotlines, just like character growth, make for a more entertaining story, but are not necessary to the production of art and can even get in the way. The point of all art, which includes anime, is to create an emotion in your audience or make him see a viewpoint or understand a philosophy. If Shinji had changed too much too early, it would have ruined the entire point of writing the show, except from a business point of view. In other words, yes, Chrno Crusade was entertaining and had some interesting parts, but Evangelion was a serious contribution to art, even if erudite and non-populist in some areas. To hold Chrno Crusade above Evangelion is, I think, a grand misunderstanding of just what the two shows are about. That's my $0.02. Plus change. AKA Home-Dog Ass-Masta' The G-Unit |
Re: Deep anime?

Chobits IMO has too much humour. I can stand humour that has a deep plot. But after watching Chobits, there was no development in plot. e.g. Chii goes to buy... stuff. The guy has to study. Some ep are just made to be funny, not to present plot or anything else. So IMO Chobits is not deep. I'll be waiting here. So if you come here, you'll find me... I promise. |
Re: Deep anime?

FMA the MANGA is. The anime has its moments. Mostly the ones actually based on the manga. Anime-wise, Boogiepop Phantom and Last Exile. |

I found Evangelion incredibly deep and dynamic, but I never really got into Chobits or saw the entire series, so I'm not gonna say anything there. *back on topic* Air, I found really deep and confusing. However, there was like 0.2% violence, which differs greatly from the anime you mentioned... |
