i understand your point, but they were talking about stoned asian. who is he anyway? is english his major spoken language? and when he posts that way (refer to other users posts, i might encountered some of his posts but i didn't really mind for i only read those which wanted to be read), is it because he has spelling problem? i think not, so why the fuss?

my view: people could spell or be grammatically correct if it matters to them, but if some just can't for reasons, i don't mind. it's just that i feel that it should not matter here because we're so culturally diversed. plus, i can't even tell who's english or who's not unless they emphasize (like what i usually do in most of my posts, i apologize though, if it brought annoyance) you don't expect me to remember every user and their origin once i get the chance to find out (threads like: what country are you from, what's your ethnic origin, and do you mind telling me who you are).

LOL. That should be enough to turn the tides in this heated argument.

Let me clarify a few things first.

I do not, I repeat, DO NOT have the tendency to insult my own origin - the post I've made earlier about 'insulting' my own origin was just a play of sarcasm, in response to Yaiba's post. Call me 'thick-faced' if you want, but my original intentions was just to tell you that - people of my origin tend NOT to use properly-spelt words, even if they know how to type correctly. You can try to correct them - but it takes a lot of energy just to make him do that, and it's not worth it.

However as stated as below, I am indeed embarassed, since this issue has become a hot topic among the people in this forums, and that involves the image of my origin.

And well, that's why I've said, "Great. If you want to speak on behalf for him, go ahead. Let me assure you that the great effort you're putting in is going to waste." And it was a great waste of energy spent on this topic indeed. Hope to see this topic get to cool down pretty soon.

Behold the possibilities ! The end is merely the start of a new history !

stonedazn: " @ Jad [Alt] Kaizer
as much as u'd liek u'r own ppl (msians) to speak 'proper' english...i think it's sunk in that malaysians like speaking the way they speak just like singaporeans like speaking their 'singglish' as it is fondly referd to as. Also...regardless whether it is 'YOUR' origin you have no right to badmouth 'your' own origin, rather, you should be proud to be a malaysian and to have malaysians behave like malaysians. We aren't embarrasing ourselves being who we really are..."malaysians" so if you got problem 'bout being malaysian yooh can go live in singapore lah...(no offence u sings out there...i juz dunnoh why the sing gov wanna separate lah.)

I'm sure I used azn in one of my posts but that doesn't imply that I can't spell. Just like what gij has pointed out, they are obviously intentional. Using the word azn makes it more cool than Asian. We can't blame others for their lack of Spelling skills because this forum is filled up with people of different nationalities. Which, by the way, consider English as their second langauge (just like me) thus finding it hard to spell words. As for my grammar? I have to admit, I'm not good when it comes to grammar, be it English grammar or Filipino grammar. Picking up on other people has gone a long way, let's just accept their flaws, they're not perfect. ^_^

stoned_azn : Glad you're reading this.

Indeed, a countryman should be proud of being a part of his country, but I don't tell myself to be proud of flaws that originated from cultural influences. And it's not sunk within us - it can be changed anytime we want to. Just like when you can decide when to type your words clear enough for others to understand. I don't think it's too hard for you to do it, right?

Some of you guys here may now think that I am a pain in the aXXX who likes to pick on other's weaknesses or ugly sides. I don't deny that I am one, since whenever I see something that can be done in a better way, I won't hesitate to say it out. I believe in making things better, but not making rotten things look good.

P/S Good luck in getting unbanned. I look forward in meeting you in the forums.

My view: I think that people should spell correctly if possible, however I'm not going to apply that rule if your first language isn't English.
I second this!

Ditto!

For me, I'm just grammar- and spelling-compulsive. I can understand the occasional slip of hand or mistake, but.... I don't particularly enjoy translating a mutated form of my first language into its proper form. In the meantime, I'm accusing a convenience-obsessed, "me!NOW!" society as the cause of this figurative plague. Please ignore the punn.

As for myself, I talk like this in real life, as well as on Instant Messenger; perhaps I'm just an oddball. I always speak as though I'm writing an essay, usually in the most verbose language I can muster from my memory. I've convinced myself that strong speaking and writing skills are signs of intelligence, though I know that is simply a prejudice and hope for attention.

Golly, I can't wait to be a teacher and fight against my pet peeve. Curse the current effectiveness of the English curriculum...!

Also, I find it particularly commical that near every user that posted on this thread used language that contrasts with his or her normal posting style. I'll assume that everyone is showing off superior command of English simply because of the nature of the thread. :D

i'm in gryffindor!

It depends... mostly on the internet people don't care. I know that even I have broken my spell check on word a few times. Not proud of that fact either... espically since I want to major in English ed. (Of course one time one of my professors took three times to spell "history" correctly on the board. It's nice not to be the only one who can't spell.)

I try to keep an eye on my spellings but after a long day I just can't be bothered.

This requires a unique combination of psychology...and extreme violence.

a helpful tip that helps me when I look over other people's papers or writing in general, is Webster's online dictionary. Free, fast, and looking up words helps you learn how to spell words correctly.

It makes your point seem more intelligent if you spell words correctly and your grammar is at least semi-understandable.

I spell fine when it comes to papers and such, but when it comes to covos and stuff online I don't worry about it. Especially since m057 p3pl3 t4lk l1k3 th415 4 s3m r34450n. and 1f u c4n r34d t415 u n33d 2 g37 l41d.

Anyways; yea; spelling important just not online. And CRAP it takes a lot to write like that.

about the opinion on not applying the rule for people whose english is not their first language..

i've been thinking, there are actually people who are very proficient in english even though it's like.. their second language. i mean, it's the new era, many people are becoming multi-lingual, and not just that, some are even good at more than one language.

so, in this case, should these people be forgiven even if they "+4Lk Lyk3 +h!$"?

funniest thread ever. i enjoyed reading the entire thing.

i tried typing shorcuts and let me tell you... it isn't as easy as you think.

they say intentional misspelling can actually "downgrade" your brain.... it's the sickness of many students nowadays... they can no longer seem to differentiate the time for writing formal themes and the time for posting blogs.

spelling words properly, be it in essays or instant messaging, is common COURTESY to your reader...you don't want to give other people a hard time figuring out your thoughts.it isn't to show intelligence, eloquence, what-not. taking the extra time to correct spelling errors means you care for your readers....

the reason why some people are pissed at those who intentionally spell their words incorrectly is probably because of the fact that it takes up too much time to decipher these self-invented codes.

i have no problem with capitalization...since i do not do so myself unless it is something formal.

and grammar...i don't mind....unless it's too off key i really couldn't understand the entire post. subject-verb agreement errors are still committed even by the most profound in the english language.

and for people who are really good in english but english is not their first language...exception to the rule or not...it doesn't hurt to be courteous.

if i misspelled anything, i believe you all know it wasn't anything intentional

if life gives you shit, make fertilizer.

Now this is what happens when people are used for text messages, for text addicts, they usually know the correct spelling, but since they're too used to text messages, they're too lazy and decided to purposely put "typos" in their posts, which is...annoying.

Another reason would be laziness, yes, some people are probably not used to typing and such that they have to scroll their eyes on the keyboard for the keys, then if they can't take it anymore, they just use some shortcuts to cut time. I mean, how can they learn speed typing if they're just going to use shortcuts?

I understand foreign languages that know English barely, but I recommend that all people must know it since it's a universal language and if for certain conditions concerning communication [wow, 4 C's] then English would be appropriate for that kind of matter.

As for grammar, well, probably you can find some wrong grammar at my post, but yeah, I'm not very good at it, that's why I'm learning.
