Anybody play this game?

I haven't, I want to, I most likely will some day in the near future. I don't really have the money available to get it right now though, with Christmas coming up and a bunch of games coming out/already out that I want to get.

I have heard nothing but good things about it however, as well as people talking about how difficult it is.

Plus, if it's so good and popular that it actually got Atlus to produce extra copies to fill demand, it HAS to be good. Atlus is kind of infamous for producing low quantities of their games.

I'm level 85 with a roughly even build across all stats. I've beaten all the bosses on my first run with only the final boss to go, but I want to finish leveling up all my favorite weapons before NG+

I watched my roommate beat the final boss on his file and it looked like it was very easy and disappointing.

I'm currently trying to get a pure greystone for a +5 Crushing Claymore, but it is proving quite difficult and I don't know how to get world 2 to pure white tendency to get one for free with the Dragon Bone Smasher...

I finally got it today after trading in Modern Warfare 2 (first and last time I let my friends talk me into getting a game I'm not interested in). Going to start playing it when I get a school assignment done away with.

Wish I had gotten it sooner though. I've got no one to really play with since most people I know here on Gendou and Atlus Online are much higher level thanks to having it longer.

I'm kind of disappointed in the online play. Me and Izumo tried to play together but couldn't get it to work. He could never see my Soul Sign and vice versa.

Apparently there are a bunch of different servers that can't be seen, so we'd have to sign in and out of the PSN until we could eachothers messages (which would take god knows how long). Plus, other people tend to find our Soul Signs and summon us.

I hope they implement an Invite System at some point. It seems like the kind of game that would actually be pretty fun to play with others.

Yeah i agree with Jon-san, we were having problems seeing each others soul sign to participate in co-op mode. It was disappointing cause it would have been fun killing things together.

Anyways just a question. Has anybody invaded or been invaded by another user online? I was invaded once...bad timing cause i just finished off a tough enemy (killing the Red Dragon) when the guy showed up. So i was unprepared for the encounter & lost. Luckily the dood wasn't smart enough to pick up my leftover souls.

Another thing is i found a glitch in the game. You know when you die you lose all your souls & have to go all the way back to where you died to pick it up...unfortunately if you die getting there you lose the souls from the original death which is usually much larger. If you die the 2nd time immediately use the PS button to quit the game before it has a chance to load you back to the start. This way when you restart the souls from your first death will still be intact. Doesn't happen all the time but usually most of the time. There is nothing more annoying is losing alot of souls trying to get it back.

Currently at level 50 grinding souls to level up before i tackle the 3rd part of Boletaria palace.

I had some guy invade my game today actually, first time it had happened and I was a little freaked out since I was responding to a message from my friend (the XMB was up and I could see the warning message being displayed) so I couldn't control my character.

I believe it was the 4th world, with the skeletons. I was right at the foot of the outside wall to the castle (after you head up the stairs), I was there so that the archers at the top couldn't kill me while I responded to my friends message. I saw the warning and quit out as fast possible so I could prepare because I knew what it meant since I had read the description of the Black Stone. Luckily the guy who invaded my game had a few things working against him.

He was a magic user with a dagger and a crossbow, while I'm a soldier with a heavy steel shield and Quality Long Sword. Basically he had no way to block my attacks since he had no shield, his crossbow was useless because I did have a shield and his magic attack was a straight shot arrow type, so it was easy to sidestep. We danced around for a bit and he managed to hit me once with a magic attack, but he kept running off and healing himself when I hit him 2 or 3 times. At one point he ran off to go heal and I ran after him, when he stopped running and began to use an item I was able to trigger the instant kill impalement (he had his back turned to me which must have been why I was able to pull it off) and he was killed.

It was kind of sketchy really, mainly because I didn't know what to expect since it hadn't happened before. I expected him to be much stronger and to just slaughter me in 3 or 4 hits, but he was actually a pretty big pushover. Of course, I know that I only got lucky, I doubt that I'll be able to beat the next person that invades my game.

To play together u have to be within ten or fifteen levels of each other. I'm in my third playthru and jeez is it hard. The bosses are easier than the enemies u have to get past to actually fight the boss. Someone invaded me as old monk fortunately I had dual wield blind +5 on me. It's awesome how it ignores shield and armor. I didn't even need to activate the clever rat ring. Now I'm devoting my time to my new gundam game I bought battlefield report uc 0081. Hopefully I'll comeback to DS before my friend gets to lvl 400 or higher cause then we can't play together

Some tips on invading/being invaded:

1) Poison/plague/bleed

Not only does poison cause damage, but it also halves the restoration from healing items used and this is handy in ending a fight quick. Plague drains health really fast, however only Death Cloud and the Baby's Nail can inflict it. Bleed also drains health slowly and is a small help.

All 3 can be inflicted at the same time.

Personally, I have a +5 Mercury Uchigatana for poison and bleed (works quite well) and Death Cloud for plague.

Also, make sure you have the lotuses and/or dark moon grass equipped before engaging the enemy so that any status effects you get inflicted with can be quickly cured.

2) Anti-Magic Field

A must have if you plan on doing a lot of invading as it will save your @ss. I've encountered many players that played off the fact that most shields don't block magic very well, I then pwned those players as they had brought only a wand and no shield.

One downside is that it blocks all magic in the area of effect, so you won't be able to cast any spells yourself. You can cast all your buffs before using it thought and they will still be in effect after it is used.

3) Magic

A common strategy as most shield have terrible magic damage reduction. Soul Ray and Homing Soul Arrow will quickly kill an enemy relying on a shield. Also, Death/Poison/Acid Cloud are effective in ending a fight. The best way to use the clouds is to hide around a corner and use the camera angle to watch the enemy approach, then cast it just as they are nearing you. Acid Cloud can be used to break an enemies armour and reduce it effectiveness, but does not cause any direct damage. Ignite is a fast, melee range spell that causes considerable fire damage.

Buffs are also very useful. Warding greatly reduced physical damage and Enchant Weapon and Light Weapon add magic damage to your weapon similar to using Sticky White Stuff.

4) Use the environment

If you are invading, hang out with some of the enemies that are already in the level, they won't attack you (you can kill them though). They can keep the player occupied while you snipe at him/her.

Also, if you can, push the other player over a ledge or get them to run over it themselves. However, you should note that an invading black phantom that dies from a fall (and possibly poison, though I'm not sure) will lose a soul level. So if someone invades your world you can be extra pwning by pushing them to their death and having them lose a level. I've done it. *evil smile*

Also, if you are invaded and the enemy runs off into and enemy hoard don't pursue them right away. You can keep going on through the level as you were and wait for them to come to you.

5) Use your weapon to its fullest

I'll tell you right now, its going to be a long battle if you just attack then block over and over.

The rolling attack for most weapons (especially the katanas) is often the fastest strike for a weapon and I recommend using it. The running attack is often quite fast as well.

Most weapons also have a one-two attack (normal attack followed by power attack) and it is handy in getting 2 hits in before blocking. The evade and counter is also handy for getting in extra attacks.

Use back attacks as often as possible. They do massive damage.

Also note that some of the special weapons (like the Large Sword of Searching) have other special combos that the basic weapons don't have.

6) Don't Overburden Yourself

While the brushwood armour does give the highest defense, it also ruins your stamina regeneration and likely inhibits your ability to roll. In a PvP fight, heavy armour won't make enough of a difference in damage reduction to offset the handicapping effects of using it. Heavy armour is really only useful against the minor enemies in the level and should probably not be used against black phantoms and bosses.

I do highly recommend the Ancient King's armour though. It is heavy and you will need a high stamina level to keep your ability to roll, but it causes no reduction in stamina regeneration.

7) Useful Equipment/Items

The Dark Silver shield is arguably the best shield in the game. It has 100% magic reduction and only weighs 5 pounds. If you aren't going with the Anti-Magic Field route, I recommend you use the Dark Silver Shield.

The Dragon Bone Smasher. I've not used it myself (I can't get white world tendency in world 2...) but I watched my roommate get utterly raeped by an invading player who used it. My friend had a +6 Steel shield up and the enemy, while 2-handing the weapon, took half his life AND threw him about 5 body lengths.

The Baby's Nail is the only weapon that can cause plague (300 at +5) however it does terrible regular damage. It might do well as a secondary weapon though.

The Blind, while not having very high attack, ignores shields. So any shield dependent character can get easily owned by it. Also, if you come against someone using a Blind you might as well just 2 hand your weapon or switch to magic in your off-hand.

Any weapon that causes poison. It doesn't have to be your main weapon either, a Mercury Dagger as your secondary can get many strikes in and after poison is inflicted, switch back to your main weapon.

As already mentioned, the Ancient King's armour gives high defense while not ruining stamina regeneration.

Black Leather armour provides high poison resistance.

Old Raggedy armour (female character only) provides high plague resitance.

The Graverobber's Ring will make you less visible to invading phantoms.

The Foe's Ring will increase you attack as a black phantom.

The Clever/Dull Rat's Rings will increase your attack/defense by 50% when your HP falls below 30%

Dark Moon Grass fully heals HP/MP and cures any status ailments. There is only a limited number that you can get in a play-through though.

The lotuses (Soldier's, Royal, and Widow's) heal status effects and should be equipped prior to engaging another player.

Sticky White Stuff/Turpentine add magic and fire damage respectively.

Kunai can cause poison.

That's about all I can think of right now. Also, if you don't feel like fighting an invading black phantom you can use the Banish miracle to kick them out of your world, though they will have to be near-by before you cast it.

The Banish Miracle is something I was unable to get during my first playthrough (and it will take me a while to get up to it during my second) and I really wish I had it.

The amount of invasions I've had to deal with (especially in world 1-4 and in every world during NG+) is ticking me off. My first time in world 4-1 had me getting invaded 6 times with only about 20 seconds between invasions. In NG+ I immediately got invaded in 2-1 three times in a row (the first time I got killed, and then the second time I got invaded by the same player and managed to kill him). That gameplay element ceases to be entertaining once you can't even move 30 feet away from the starting point before being invaded by every freaking player on the server. It's irritating.

The thing that I hate about the Invading thing is that (aside from dieing from falls or AI Enemies) Invading players have no risk at all when invading another persons game. If they die, they die, they don't lose out on a thing and they can go right back to invading as soon as they respawn. No consequences for them at all. Meanwhile, the person being invaded could get killed and lose out on all their souls as well as having to go through the entire level again, killing all the enemies that they already killed.

I will probably be playing in Offline mode from now until I am able to get the Banish spell, only then will I be going back to Online mode. I will certainly enjoy the Banish spell when I obtain it.

@Stoney - No offense, but number 4 with the enemies is a dirty trick and I despise every player who uses it. Running off in to a group of enemies and hiding there or attacking from there basically means that the player who is in that world is not able to win, unless by some miracle they are able to take out the enemies while fighting off the Black Phantom and then kill that Phantom. They can't get out of the level at all since you are unable to leave a level when someone has invaded and they can't go forward because they are pretty much condemning themselves to death by doing it.

I'm not sure if you do that or not, I'm not accusing you of it, but you listed it as a tip and I really don't like the idea of that cheap trick being encouraged.

Pushing somebody off of a ledge is fair in terms of using the environment though, it takes some careful planning and pushing and relies on the other person messing up, plus it can be used the other way as well.

LOL I just started playing this game yesterday. Its so much fun x) Its so satisfying to parry and then o-ko
Hate how you can't pause though...It doesn't make it harder or anything, just inconvenient x(
I love the music and atmosphere of the game

@Maiku - "Hate how you can't pause though...It doesn't make it harder or anything, just inconvenient x("

Yeah, that sort of irked me a bit too during gameplay. I hated any time where I was forced to leave the room due to the lack of a pause ability. I was always worried that something (or someone, as I previously ranted about) would get me while I was out.

@ Jon

Forgot to mention, if an invading character does run into a group of enemies you can counter by using the rolling attack of the Cleaver/Great Sword/Great Club/any 2H sword as it damages in a radius about the player, then roll out, heal and repeat until the smaller enemies are gone. You could also use Firestorm or Wrath of God as they are area of effect centered around the caster, but they have a casting time. I think Firestorm is faster and is the stronger of the two.

Also, if you run in then the Phantom will have to switch to melee and will likely take out some of the enemies as well.

I have a Claymore as my main weapon and it works great for taking out dense groups of enemies.

Also, if you are worried about leaving your game alone, you can just sign out of your profile to the title screen as this is essentially "pausing" the game. It is almost constantly auto-saving so you will restart almost (if not exactly) where you left off. You can't do it during a boss battle though... *sad panda*

*EDIT*

I had a thought and so I looked into it. According to a forum on GameFAQs you can log out of your game during a black phantom invasion with no negative side effects other than probably getting flaming messages sent to your PSN account from the pissed off invader.
