Hayao Miyazaki's newest film in english

ok im a little mad but also glad about this new movie ponyo.
First Disney and Pixar have done relatively good job with previous dubs, ie:Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind,
but they have taken this new one and made it look like they have fired all the people who we're smart enough to get decent voice actors.

The latest movie is Ponyo, (I prefer the direct translation to the English laziness "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea"), a story about a fish that wants to be human. Now I can already say I was happy while I listened to the commercial, However the best thing it seemed they had to say was they had "shiny named" voice actors.

They casted the youngest jonas brother (or however you spell it) AND (cause you have to have 2 "shiny" names) Miley Cyrus' younger sister! They basically screamed it during the commercial. To me it said they didn't even look like they tried to find decent voice actors and went straight into trying to pull only the Disney fan base while telling the true fans of Hayao Miyazaki's works to take a hike. (If anyone else noticed its like George Lucas and how he'd put out "shiny" junk for ONLY his fans.)

This really upsets me that his work is being insulted like this.

Can't say I'm surprised, a bunch of anime-adapted projects are being made now, which will fail miserably already.
Since this appears to just be a dubbing job, there's definitely nothing to be surprised about.
Failing to dub something from Japan correctly, this happens, what, the vast majority of the time?

I think we're starting to move onto a new era now. Fans are going to become more disappointed in the upcoming years.
I know there's a few directors who agree and are on our "side", but they're power is just not enough.

I despise how all these Disney characters are getting such huge jobs from entertaining what, a bunch of other kids who laugh at everything?
I don't understand how all these Disney stars are getting such mainstream attention.
And the fact that they're involved in these foreign projects is ridiculous.
Also note, this is not the only film which will have stars from Disney.
Future upcoming anime-adapted live-actions (US made) will also have them, which blows...

This isn't the new movie where his son is pretty much directing it, is it?
I know it has to do with Earth something, but it's been a while since I've last heard updates so I'm not sure anymore.
I heard that movie was going to be pretty epic, and since it's taking so long to create, it must be,
but this was a while back and it could've been released in Japan already or so, though I haven't heard any announcements.

This country is going to start leaning on kids now (later aged teens, younger aged 20s).
And Disney and Pixar are highly notable companies, too, but if there's such a sudden change, they must have a new crew.

I guess the Japanese directors never care, or they just know US will fail at dubbing them.
I haven't really seen anything so serious about a director taking major offense for someone dubbing his/her work inaccurately.

I feel for you US fellas...
Have Jonas brothers as dubs is kinda of a nightmare for any person who wants to see this film.

I just hope they don't follow you guys in here and put the last emo band that is making success to dub Ponyo ; 3;
But is the end, I might end up seeing it subbed...

@DA
Go check it out!
I'm almost sure it is already released in Japan.
There are already fan works in DeviantArt XDDD
You are lucky you won't have danger to hear something bizarre as Jonas Bothers voice in 5 years kid ._.;

@dfly thats the EXACT reason why i don't want to see it. if i didn't know it was a little Jon-ASS brother and a little Hannah Montanna. Then I wouldve seen it probably cause Hayao Miyazaki is just GREAT! But the people Disney casted ruins it for me. I always loved Disney-Pixar movies, but I just can't see disney doing animes.

Hmm, I feel like they chose the Jonas and Cyrus kid to get people to see the movie over here in North America.

Not surprised either. Jonas Brothers and HM are about the only thing kids in Disney's target audience care for nowadays, so why not slap them in and shout it from the rooftops? It'll get the butts of those kids in the theater, and that is all Disney really cares about.

Honestly, the sooner you stop believing big corporations have your interests at heart the better off you'll be. Pulling their puppets out is way cheaper and rakes in more cash than hiring anyone based on talent.

@DA- Couldn't have said it any better than how you did. These Disney characters are brand name actors are doing just that, entertaining kids, which is fairly easy to do since the younger a kid is, the more easily amused they are. The thing is, kids are still a part of the public, just like teenagers, adults and seniors, so we can't really dismiss them just because we don't like them.

That being said, I'm not really a fan of this guys films, but if I do watch it, then it will be the subbed version instead of the dub. After all, why bother complaining about the VA's when you can just as easily watch a superior version?

They already are. I know I am. And because of Disney's terrible casting these days I've stopped watching almost everything Disney that was made in the 21st century, Enchanted exempt. :L

Yep, I've watched dubs of Mononoke and Howl and the actors chosen to voice the characters were pretty good, Christian Bale included. Until Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, where they chose the younger siblings of a certain singer and boyband as the english vocies. However just because of that doesn't mean the dub will be bad, just the casting. XD

Did you feel bad about the previous dubs they've done?

Why not watch their performance first before getting upset? Every dubbing studio uses their own actors, it just so happens that Disney's actors... are *surprise surprise* the Disney people!

I'm more excited that an anime movie is getting a mainstream box-office release...

@Nekorin- The thing is, over here Anime is still seen as somewhat of a kids kind of thing amongst the general public. Having these Disney characters as the main VA names attached to it is kind of not helping that image. Besides, we DO know what their performances will be like, because (at least in the case of the Jonas Brother) they are everywhere Disney is. It's not like this is our first time hearing them.

Pokemon used to get theatrical releases over here as well, even though it was because Pokemon was a fad among kids.

As long as the voices moderately fit, and the acting isn't completely terrible I will deal. Tina Fey, Matt Damon, and Cloris Leachman are going to also voice in it. And they picked children to voice the children. So far from what I've heard, I can deal with the little Jonas Bro. and the Cyrus sister. Well, that they kinda fit atleast, not sure on acting.

This doesn't help the image that anime is not all kiddy but from the look of Ponyo, do you really think that good actors or someone else dubbing it would make people change their minds? Atleast this is an anime that is finally being wide released compared to recent ones that aren't (Neon Gensis and Eureka 7(that's the name right?)).

Not really one to post in forums anymore.

I saw a commercial for it a few minutes ago, August 14th (theater release?).
It's definitely not the highly rumored film by his son, guess it's going to take a while longer to finish.

Miyazaki's name is honored in anime and his films are historic and award winning masterpieces.
If it happens to be on TV and I'm downstairs watching TV, I'll definitely tune in to see it cause I love his films and Studio Ghibli.
His past few movies (if not all that I think I've seen) have been dubbed fairly well.

It's been years since his last film was dubbed, and it's obvious a new set of VAs have been chosen, which will be criticized upon.
And yeah, that's the main discussion of this thread. Those long veterans aren't here anymore, which is a shame.

[@Jon] I love the kids, but I sometimes think those Disney stars think they can rank with like Will Smith or Tom Hanks,
just because their shows make a few kids laugh with their childish acting schemes,
then in some other cases with those wanting to be musicians, they're just handed opportunities to record an album,
just because they sang the OP or ED theme songs to their own shows (Miley Cyrus...).

It's obvious the younger audience ranks the same with older teens, adults, seniors, etc. because they become so popular.
Then again the same people love 'em (kids) and the same people hate 'em (the older teens, so on++), so it's whatever to me, lol.

About your other topic, I agree with how "anime" is seen to the general public, and it always upsets me even though it shouldn't matter.
It's like prejudice on anime, if there's such a thing (lol), but it's always called "a cartoon" and pointed towards kids,
but then it's funny when they love films like Finding Nemo and Spongebob Squarepants. Maybe because it's Japanese? I'unno, it's childish...

And about Pokemon, that's popular internationally it's unbelievable.
I love when the films get dubbed here and air on TV, and yeah the voices (are even worst then before, wow),
but I just enjoy seeing the new Pokemon and the battles against the legends, which to me are awesome.

As if they didn't already do this. They used Billy Crudup for Ashitaka and Claire Danes for San in Princess Mononoke, anyway. Since Hayao Miyazaki movies are so popular in the US, companies take the opportunity to earn additional money.

Looking at the box office numbers in the states it looks like Ponyo isn't doing as well as they hoped for. After a few weeks in theatres it has only managed to muster 11 million dollars. It is still i read the 5th highest grossing Miyazaki film in the states... i

It's a shame of the poor numbers since Ponyo is a heartwarming anime film.
