There's a super-virus going around called the Conficker Worm. Can someone tell me what it exactly can it do to your computer, how to avoid it, and what to do if your PC has it? |

There isn't really much cause for concern as of yet, all you have to do is take a few simple steps to check and see if you are infected or not. If you are, then Norton has a removal tool on their site which can get rid of it (of course you will need to download it from an uninfected computer and transfer it to your own). As Kid said, one of the easiest ways to check and see if you have the worm or not is to try going to the site of a major Security site, such as Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, AVG and so on. Another way to check is to look at your Windows Update history. If you have had a Windows Update recently then you are probably fine. [Start -> Control Panel -> Security Center -> Windows Update] Conficker C generally blocks those things when your computer is infected, so that you can't try and get rid of it. It stops Windows Update as well as access to Security sites for Anti-Viruses. As long as you have your Anti-Virus and Windows updated then you will be alright. Right now nobody really knows what Conficker C is going to do, on April Fools day it was reported that the worm only connected about 70,000 computers to a command site, and they haven't received any 'orders' yet. So just keep things updated and don't go freaking out, the Security companies are watching it carefully and working on ways to stop it. There were two more of these Conficker Worms apparently, so this isn't exactly the first time this has been heard of. Personally I think the media has overblown the problem to try and create buzz. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anyway, to directly answer your questions. What can it do to your computer? Basically the worm takes control of your computer and turns it into a zombie of sorts, it searches out a site to connect to with all of the other infected computers where they will all await their 'orders' if you will. The security sites don't know what it will do right now. Some of the things it might do however is steal personal information, send you Spam, attack other sites to bring them down, try and hook you into scams, typical evil hacker stuff. How to avoid it? It can't really be avoided per se. All you can do is stick to the methods I mentioned above to ensure that it can't get into your system. There isn't really a specific way to get infected by it such as downloading certain programs. The worm spreads itself through networks by infecting computers, USB Flash Drives, shared folders, any way it can find. How can you get rid of it? There is a removal tool which Norton has on it's website which can get rid of it (at least it says so) and it can be found here. Of course, if you can make it to that page it probably means you aren't infected in the first place, but if you want to download the tool and keep it there just in case, then go ahead. |

Wow, this one really help me. My computer was infected by conficker worm, but now it's alright. Thank you very much^^ There's a way to avoid every worm. But it's difficult. Try wireshark to see every packet data that come to your computer, if you see something irregular, just cut off your computer connection. It won't work if your computer already infected and not everyone can use it. |
