Our Effort to Keep PS2 LIFE!!!!
Link | by han on 2009-01-10 20:53:22
Hey everyone who looks in this thread of hell.
I wanted give a suggestion to keep PS2 still alive, maybe like the phoenix down for it.
Well, the PS2 biggest problem is it hadn't enough game to satisfy it user now and become a toy in a middle of next-gen console.
That's why I though we must suggest it to Sony to REMAKE every lovesims (japan version) into English version.
I'm sure that will make a lot of new games & for that will make every PS2 player in the world have their desire to play it again.
Well, I'm not asking for voting, but to send Sony this Suggestion.
I hope everyone not feel troubled of my request.
THANKS!!!!

The PS2 is still alive, just can't really compare to it's older brother, the PS3 and soon the PS4!
I don't think remaking the sims, or any game would bring the PS2 "back".

The PS2 already had some amazing games, but it's all about the PS3 now.
It terms of it being the main console (it was better than XBox and GC), it's not that mainstream anymore.
However, you can still get games for PS2 that are new and aren't for the PS3 (e.g. anime-related games).

The PS2 is still very much alive as DA said, and it stills sells a fair amount of consoles for it's age, hell it even outsold the PS3 for a couple of months. Furthermore, the part of the market that really wanted those sims and games like that, have for the most part, downloaded them via Torrents or have imported them and moded their PS2's.

Plus thier are still some games that come out for the PS2 every so often that end up being some of the best in their genres (the Persona series comes to mind). So yeah, I don't think that the PS2 has met it's end yet. Plus the fact the the most recent versions of the PS3's don't have backwards compatibility means, that if you want to play a PS2 game, you may have to buy a PS2.

i agree, yet it saddens me that non importers will have the same fun times that i have had with those games based on anime and manga which have yet to be released. such as the Bleach blade battler games or for that matter the shuupiden games that have been put out in japan and will never see the light of day here. but I digress as lung as companies such as atlus still remain functional we will still see games for the PS2.

Our brain has two shared afflictions. the first is that we pass the idea of revenge down to our children, the second is that the label people not as individuals but as groups.

Being almost 10 years old the PS2 is still selling pretty well for it's age. The highest selling console of all time with 140 million sold & fastest to hit 100 million mark (5 years) the system is a great way to get into gaming if you are new to it.

The library of games is so vast it appeals to all ages & genres, which is why to this day many gamers (like myself) still own their system even with next-gen consoles taking much of the headlines.

Yeah i agree as long as niche companies like Atlus & NIS to name a few, games will still come out for the system. In Japan there are numerous titles that have yet to be released over in North America.

In a time where the big 3 next-gen systems dominate it is nice to see a system like the PS2 is still going strong.

Like everyone else said, the PS2 is not in trouble in the slightest. It's about 10 years old and still (every so often) sells better than the other 3 consoles (In Japan, the PS1 beat out the XBox 360 for the first week of January, the year it was launched with the PS2 above that). I would say the PS2 still has at least 2 years before people start moving on to other systems. Even if games stop coming out for it (few are hitting it now besides ports) it still has a life span. There are a few main reasons:

PS2 is cheaper than any of the other consoles. Being only 129.99 or so, it's about $100-$150 cheaper than the other systems.

Unlike the XBox and Gamecube which had their games pretty much canned as soon as their respective successors came out, the PS2 still had brand new games being released on it (more than a few) during the first few years of this generation.

The PS2 has a bigger and more diverse library of games than any of the current gen consoles. With the Wii you're just getting family and kid games, few hardcore gamer titles. With the 360 you mainly get testosterone injected shooters and the like, which is what the PS3 offers since the 360 and PS3 get almost every title that the other gets, however they don't have much in terms of family or kids games. The PS2 pretty much has everything, from Shin Megami for the anime/niche gamers, Devil May Cry and Metal Gear Solid for hardcore gamers, as well as Spongebob and Monopoly for the kids and family. You can also play your PS1 games on it, which means you have the library of two game consoles to play from.

Games are cheaper on the PS2, even the new release titles. Brand new PS2 games may go upwards of 50 dollars, in comparison with current gen games which usually reach 70. There are also few good titles in the current gen which are bargain price, where as with the PS2 you can get quality titles for little more than 20 dollars because it's an older system.

Finally, this one is my personal opinion, so I don't count it as a viable reason unless you agree with my point of view:

The PS2 isn't as focused on the Online aspect of games as the current generation gaming systems are. The Wii is reluctant to go into it of course, Nintendo seems to fear the world of online gaming. The PS3 and 360 however seem dead focused on it. Both companies are pushing rather hard on the idea of gamers getting together online and competing with eachother, and it seems as though more and more games that are being released only throw in a story or single player mode for the sake of it. Games like Call of Duty used to be more about the single player campaign (with some online bits later in it's life) but the current generation of Call of Duty is all about the online experience, and if you don't have online access then you're paying 70 dollars for a game you'll get 3 hours or so of enjoyment out of. I'm not saying it's bad that online gaming is a focus, but not everyone has open access to the internet and other simply don't want to play online. The other thing about the PS2 is you don't need an HDTV to get the most out of it, which again, not everyone has.

There's no reason to attempt to breathe more life into the PS2, it has done better by far of any game system to date, even better than the Wii which everyone seems to be praising for it's incredible sales(it's got 40 million units in about 2 and a half years since launch. It needs to sell another 60 million units in the same time frame to pass the PS2's record). 140 million units and still going is not the sign of a system that needs help. The PS2 has had a great life, it's been around for about 8 years and it will most likely still be alive when it turns 10 if things go well. Whenever the PS2 is ready to move on is fine with me, it's outlived the other system and I think rather than trying to keep it going by kicking it a few times, we should just let it sit down and retire whenever it's ready. It's earned it.

It sells more than the PS3.

What a world.

If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.

I just think there are still many PS2 fan like us in the world, but it seems not fair for us who not live in japan or can't read japanese to haven't enjoy playing the genre being loved more than half world's player(lovesims), I just hope we can enjoy those game in USA version which many people understand.I'm sure there are many people waiting for this chance too.
well, even it still alive its existence will erase from the world.though ps3 blu-ray disc is too expensive, how about the teenage like us buy it?I don't think SONY could continue like these. They might be must create the dvd-format disc for ps3 too.

@han- Don't worry about your writing. However you prefer to write is alright here on Gendou, as long as someone can understand you then it's no sweat.

The PS2, as of Jan. 13th, has now sold 50 million units in North America. Since the last time the sales for Europe was updated was back in May, I would guess that it has also sold or soon will have sold 50 million units there as well. So the overall sales of the PS2 worldwide now is around 150 million units or so. I don't see any problem with the PS2 making it to 2010 at this point. The only way it could die out is if Sony stops supporting it, and I doubt they would stop supporting something that sells so well after 10 years. So, there you go, current generation of game consoles can shove it, PS2 is the best you can get. I'd like to know if the Wii, PS3 or 360 will end up lasting a decade with sales like the PS2.

Some PS2 games coming out in 2009. From the look of this line-up, PS2 is far from dieing.

Ar Tonelico 2 - RPG - NIS (I may look into this)
Tomb Raider Underworld - Action/Shooter/Adventure - Eidos (It's a port, but hey)
Guitar Hero: Metallica - Music - Activision
Mana Khemia 2 - RPG - Gust
Shining Dragon - Action - Valcon Games (No details on this, but could be something to watch out for)

Hope so... Currently, most PS2 games are for Japan only... I'm not said it ignored others, but if you figure it out, there might a point from it...

The biggest problem with doing that, and the main reason most games from Japan aren't translated, is because companies worry that there won't be a big enough audience of people in the country it's brought to. They know people in say North America Want a certain game to be translated, but the question is, will there be enough of those people to cover the costs of doing it? That's a tough one to figure out. Bigger companies like Capcom, Square-Enix, Nintendo and Sony can afford to do it if they want to gamble on it, after all, if they do it and the game becomes a hit then it could open up a whole new franchise that they can push in the country from now on. Smaller companies however can't afford to take that risk and instead release the game inside Japan where the know there is a bigger audience for it. Anime and odd games are huge in Japan, but not as much in the West, so there's a bigger chance it could turn out to be a financial drain. After all, for current day games you have to get money together for things like translators, a company that will Localize the game for you (if the company who made the game can't do it themselves), a cast of voice actors for the country in question as well as studio time for recording the dialogue, then you've got to produce copies of the disc with all of that for the region it's meant for (Instruction booklets, discs, labels, covers, cases).

Hmm.... People's gaming lifestyle at east and west are very different...
Example... USA - Japan...
I'll start with USA as the of west gaming lifestyle...
They always made a game which there are thought the game are the best (for grafics, sounds, etc)...
They always made a game with lots of action....
And lots of violence.... Duh...

On Japan as the example of east gaming lifestyle...
Their grafics are cartoony, or should I say anime-wise grafics...
No need such much technology of it... They done simple only...

By the way, some Japan game developers are trying to move on with cutting-edged grafics....
But, I'd dont mind at all...
Sort of...

I think they don't need change the voice into USA just put subtitle in the events & dialogs.Though, if there are 1 or 2 game(s) lovesims are trying to released and they become succes, they might be made a pioneer for other lovesims games.Well, maybe they can remake the famous one (of course by a big company such as SE or bandai)but I think talk is easier than you do it rite? ^^
