Ergo Proxy? Gilgamesh?
Link | by on 2008-01-23 09:11:30
I am curious to hear what people have to say about the anime and general thoughts on how, perhaps, a club would take it as a club viewing. I'm trying to find something deep and alluring for my University's anime club to get into. I was thinking Ergo Proxy or Gilgamesh.

Any other ideas?

Paranoia Agent comes to mind, but your club members probably have already seen it. It's very psychological.

Welcome to the NHK, it has alot of humourous moments, but it's quite an insight into the hikkikomori lifestyle.

Now and Then: Here and There, it's anti-war, violence message is pretty deep.

That's all I can think of right now ^^.

It's like this and like that and uh.

Gilgamesh?
You know, I never knew I'm capable of saying this kind of comment on an anime, but... really...

Gilgamesh SUCKS!

I Sincerely hope that this kind of show can never ever again be made.

Too gloomy. It's all about gloomness and nothing more.
Not even a story line.

Eeeeuuuwww.... yuck!

Stay away from this anime.

For deep plot anime, I would recommend:

Ghost In The Shell (concludes GITS Movie 95, GITS : Movie2, GITS SAC, GITS SAC 2nd Gigs, GITS Solid State Society)

Haibane Renmei

Ergo Proxy. Yeah, it's good.

Jyuu Ni Kokuki (12 Kingdoms)

Mushishi

They're all good quality animes. But I suggest newbies not to see them yet. Stick to Naruto or Bleach instead. I hate those kind of animes but it's for ye'r own good.

Last semester we seen Mai-HiME (full series), Jyuu Ni Kokuki (12 Kingdoms - they really got into to the point we skipped the Taiki arc and the ones which introduced the girls to follow the Yoko-centered ones), Noir, Bleach (further a head then whats on Cartoon Network), a few others. I know some want to see Jigoku Shoujo and Fate / Stay Night (working on getting the license for Fate). We are going to shoot for Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, finishing the Bleach arc, Tactics, and trying to finish one more... NHK might do it.

I'm just not too big a fan of silly stuff, but NHK looked interesting, along with some sensei one.

So... Gilgamesh was all pretty and no real plot? It looked interesting, uber dark doesn't bother me since I'm more into "gothy" anime.

Well, different people like different anime, so give Gilgamesh and Ergo Proxy a try if you want ^_^

I've never seen Ergo Proxy, but I did see bits of Gilgamesh because our Humanities class was studying it...but it nothing like the book >_> At all. I thought it was okay, I just wish the graphics were better...and yeah, it's depressing and dark and stuff because the story is kinda like that. XD

Ok, honestly, Gilgamesh blows monkey dongs (not to mention how much of a cop-out the ending is) and Ergo Proxy is good, but not to watch in a group of people. It'll be like showing Lain or Boogiepop Phantom. You don't want to give people a mind ****. For the Anime club last semester, I showed a lot of movies like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Paprika, Tekkon-kinkreet, as well as shows like Nodame Cantabile, Mahoraba, ROD:TV/OVA, Voices of a Distant Star, Tokyo Godfathers, Porco Rosso.. etc etc but you catch my drift. Don't show things too "deep". I showed Mushishi and people were half asleep. There is a difference between showing a group Anime and an Anime which you watch by yourself.

Show things like Fruits Basket or Azumanga Daioh or GTO. Keep in mind you aren't there to show the best Anime, but you're there to show Anime everyone can enjoy. Monster is a damn good Anime, but for an Anime club to watch? No.

And yes, I've been running Anime clubs for 5 years now and counting so it's not like I'm making things up or talking out of ignorance.

Ah... yes... Toki wo kakeru shoujo (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time), Paprika, Voices of a Distant Star, they're good animes.
Why not try byousoku 5cm from the maker of Voices of a Distant Star?

Actually, if it's about watching it together with lots of people, I think the question would be the taste of thus many people. Unless of course, they're all at the same otaku level.

Let's see. How about I give you some titles of different genres?

[Drama Genre]
SOLA
KANON 2006

[Philosophy Genre]
Haruhi Suzumiya No Yutsuu
Haibane Renmei

[Epic Genre]
12 Kingdoms (Jyuu Ni Kokki)
Harukanaru Toki No Naka De

[Bloody Genre]
Elfen Lied
Higurashi No Nakukoroni

[Fairy-Tale Genre]
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away

[Fighting Genre]
Kaze No Stigma
Samurai Champloo

Well, that's all I can think about in the meantime...

There are these good movies too, you know:
-Appleseed 2005
-Final Fantasy 7 : Advent Children (Make Sure to know about the game first)
-Millenium Artist Chiyoko

Voices of a Distant Star is good for a 20 or some odd minute showing. But things like The Place Promised in Our Early Days: Beyond the Cloud and Byousoku 5 Centimeter are things which to be honest, could be considered boring to certain people. I remember showing Beyond the Cloud and a few people actually fell asleep. I suggest you show action stuff to start off if anything like Black Lagoon or Baccano!. I have tried Hajime no Ippo as well and it didn't fare too good probably because of it being a sport like Anime. Things like Haruhi, Lucky Star, PPD, School Rumble and so forth are good Anime, but it's really more for those people who are frequently exposed to the Anime culture so it would be wise to hold off on things like those. As far as Sola, Ef, Air, Kanon, Clannad etc. are concerned, they are NOT for everyone and you can rest assured there will be some people who aren't all into the moe/uguu~~ like stuff. Maybe as time progress in the club, those can be shown on a typical basis, but as far as starting out a club, I would say no to about 80% of the ones listed above. Twelve Kingdoms is good but I would show Seirei no Moribito instead (as there is more action involved and could catch more of people's attention). Spirited Away is a good one to show; in fact, anything by Miyazaki is fine. You can also try Kon's stuff as well. FF: Advent Children is probably the worst suggestion mentioned so far as it is a fan oriented "Anime" (more like complete GC), so hold off on it. Champloo is a good one. Haibane Renmei I would say is another bad choice as it fits more into the darker and interpretive approach. Kaze no Stigma is ok, Appleseed sucks (both the old one and the new one). Higurashi might be fine I guess if an arc entire arc is to be shown. Elfen Lied could also turn a lot of people away (suprisingly). I remember the club back in the days had about 15 people. Now's it's about doubled to about 30 every week. I may not be correct about everything I have said, but it's all from experience and talking with certain club members of what they want. Stick with these key genres: Comedy and Action. Keep those in mind as a general guide line of anything to show.

ps. I have never seen anyone use Jyuu ni Kokki. It's usually Juuni Kokki.

lolishibari, could you be referring to Sayonara Zatsoubu Sensei (So long, Mr. Despair)? It's about a pessimistic, suicidal teacher with classroom full of odd students. I'm up to the sixth episode and I really like it. It's offbeat and random humour is the kind I love. Jigoku Shoujo is interesting, but I can't help but get annoyed by some of those character's decisions.

I've never been to one, but I think anime clubs should be varied. It's what Suzaku said, different anime for different people. If you stick to one kind of anime you'll be shoving aside the great variety anime has to offer. That's what I love about anime and I think anybody in an anime club should appreciate that too. I wish there were an anime club around here that I knew about u_u.

It's like this and like that and uh.

well, most titles I had mentioned earlier were intended for mid-end anime users. For newbies, I think the option's quite limited to stuffs like naruto, bleach, law of ueki, one piece, etc. You know, those pow-baf-bif-bof-crunch-bang-kaboom shows. Personally, I hate those brainless stuff. But for normal people, that'll do the trick.
