How do I make these graphs? How do I find the asymtops and how does the amplitude effect the graph?

it will be easier for you to graph this in degrees than in radians, and probably with the help of a graphing calculator as well. if you don't own one, make sure you've converted your radians to degrees, then plot it down in a graphing paper, where 2pi or 0 is 360 or 0 and pi is 180. your sin graph should start from the origin, goes up to the y-axis to 1 when x=90, then goes back y=0 when x=180, goes down to y=-1 when x=270, and y=0 again when x=360. for the cosine, the only difference with the sine is that it moves to the left by x=90, ergo, y=1 when x=0. the tan is rather hard to explain. it's some complicated graph. but when you graph it with the same method as the above, you will find that the plots form an "s" graph from x=-90 to x=90. ^____^ -michiyo- beware. the QueeN oF SiGGieS is here. kill that mr. scrolly or your siggy goes BAI BAI. it's solidarity month! let's be united! +[-- GeNDouNiaNS: i am half-back! visit my blog by clicking on the siggie banner! updated: 12.07.07 --]+

Thanks for the help but can anyone provide images that go along with your explanation. Its hard for me to learn without images and examples.

However, on a graphing calculator, when graphing Sin Cos and Tan, you use it on radian mode. This is because radians take into account of the other possible angles, even non existent ones such as 1080+ and 1080 below. for the tan graphs. you draw an S. Now as you're teacher might have mentioned, asymptoes will be a curve that will be near a certain x value but never reach it. For example if a function goes down by a half... from 2 -> 1 -> 1/2 -> 1/4 -> 1/8 -> 1/16. Since the function will always be in a half, it will never reach zero, but will be near it by a very very very small fraction. The asymtop line would the line that S curve briskly touches at x = ? (depends what function you use for tan and other mods you might put on it) for a tan graph specifically wid no mods on it. the asymtop lines would be at x = 90 and x = -90 as michi said it. Now the amplitude. generally it affects the height. For f(x) = tan (x) it's the normal you see. But for 2f(x) = 2 tan(x) it's x values do not change, but the y value increases. If you want to change your x values.... It's f(2x) = tan(2x), it'll change your x values (making them smaller, halves in this case) and not your y. Of course if you have like 2f(2x) both y and x values will change simultaneously. |

shinobi, i shall provide you with an image within 24 hours. i need to install my calculator to this pc. -michiyo- beware. the QueeN oF SiGGieS is here. kill that mr. scrolly or your siggy goes BAI BAI. it's solidarity month! let's be united! +[-- GeNDouNiaNS: i am half-back! visit my blog by clicking on the siggie banner! updated: 12.07.07 --]+

Thumbnails clicky not working. If you can't do it then Right Click and select 'View Image' for the full picture. Alright, these are your three basics (cos x, tan x, sin x). Michi can explain it, I don't have enough time.>.> (I'm barely getting a connection to the server if at all and I have a job to apply for.) Amplitude affects the height (basically) of the function. It usually matches your VS(If you know what I'm talking about, terms may be different depending on where your taught.) |
