Metal Gear Solid fans needed here!
Link | by night_link on 2006-10-17 18:04:29
I'm new to the MGS series. I'm getting a copy of MGS and MGS2 on PC from a friend.

My question is... how many are there? Are there any you really recommend? Do I have to play all to understand a story? Thanks.

Let's see, the ones I know are.

MGS (Playstation I believe)
MGS 2: Sons of Liberty[Not personally recommended. Raiden sucks.XD] (PS2)
MGS: The Twin Snakes (Gamecube)
MGS 3: Snake Eater/Snake Eater Subsistance. (PS2)
MGA[Metal Gear Acid] (PSP)
MGA 2[Metal Gear Acid 2] (PSP)
MGC[Metal Gear Solid graphic comic] (PSP)

I would recommend MGS3: Subsistance since it has Online play and a few added features.

You don't really have to play them all to understand the story, but it helps you understand what's going on.

@Jhonaton: Yup me neither, but I do want to see how they're all. In fact I've just played the first one, and the twin snakes hehehe, so I have a lot of work.

What I like from this game is the cool story it develops. It's so intriguer and you have to be creative in order to succeed in this game (ohh I remember fighting against Psycho Mantis and loosing so many times).

I really wanna play MGS 3, some people have told me it's really good, and now I just find out it has online play... excellent.

Story-wise this is how its gonna go:

-Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake eater (PS2)
-Metal Gear Solid : Portable Ops (PSP)
-Metal Gear (NES)
-Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (NES)
-Metal Gear Solid (PS)/ Metal Gear Solid :The Twin Snakes (GC)
-Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (PS2)
-Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3)

Spin offs:

-Snakes Revenge(NES)
-Metal Gear: Ghost Babel (GBC)
-MG Acid(PSP)
-MG Acid 2(PSP)

These are the remakes and some that support the Metal Gear plot

-Metal Gear Solid: Integral (PS)
-Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions (PS)
-Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (PS2)
-The Document of Metal Gear Solid 2 (PS2)
-Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (PS2)
-Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel (PSP)
-Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel 2 (PSP)

well... unfortunately i disagree with Jonathan for a bit with not recommending MGS2... well character wise... Raiden IS annoying... but the Plot of MGS2 kept me going...

whats this ..."metal gear fans needed"

!

well dont shrug off mgs2 it was a good game...well you dont necessarily have to play all the to understand the story...but i would recommend playing the remakes such as the twin snakes mgs2 substance and the mgs3 subsistence theyre worth every buck! besides mgs have some background info about previous installments...

MGS2 got a lil confusing in the middle, i just started skipping the cutscenes and the calls XD but yeah, MGS3 is VERY good, Subsistence is better online and camera view. but man, there are LOTS of MGS games, are you gonna collect them all? XD

@Lu Bu- I found the plot too dry since it followed Shadow Mosess so much. I noticed all the same old scenes and things and it just felt like I had played it before. Besides the whole Raiden's world is sort of fake thing wasn't really an interesting plot devicep[and neither was the Ocelot's arm thing.>.> That was just plain stupid.]. I just finished the game because:

1. I wanted to see how everything ended[Because I like to have closure]

and

2. Because while it is Raiden and I didn't like the story, it was still a Metal Gear Solid game with lots of stealth action.

Ah... but i think you foresaw something else... ah... its not that part that really hit me... its the idea of "being" Raiden... see... dont you recall a point where you were asked to input your data on a Console? and seeing that data on your (Raiden's) dogtag? (The idea hit me when i was collecting dog tags repeatedly and used my name in the Console) It was a mini-"VR Training"

See... think about it... "Jack" isnt even his real name... it was more like a codename given by Solidus

Imagine this: "Raiden" (you)... was "trained" in VR by using both the Shadow Moses and Tanker Data (played both MGS1 and the Tanker Mission) and it was his first "actual" mission (Plant Mission) His training was based upon both the Tanker and the Shadow Moses incident... it was his first actual mission... and if the players have played both they would be more accustomed to the controls...

It was a scary thought actually... Even Snake mentioned it: "Games training Soldiers..." (we... who have played both the Shadow Moses and Tanker Mission have "Trained" to play the Plant mission) it actually does have a good point... and the part where you have "no choice" ("if you dont save...", "you're our only hope...", etc...) proves that people can be manipulated by control of information (refuse... and certain Emotions, etc... are used to control "you")

Yes... Ocelot's Arm was a very wierd idea (heck.. i didnt get the idea of liquid's genes taking over his body... but i do recall a movie which had similar ideas... but nonetheless... really wierd...)

Do you sorta catch my drift here...?

I know all that, the conspiracy points of MGS are always good, but Raiden's story itself was bad. I only liked the conspiracy of it all which was everything that didn't have much to do with Raiden. The whole thing with this girl basically meeting Raiden and love as part of a job she was given and all this virtual stuff that he was going through was boring. Besides that Raiden was clueless the entire time so he really didn't do anything to help push the story along.

I didn't mind Raiden, Kojima wanted you to see Snake from another person's perspective and it worked. Raiden in MGS4 is a total badass so you would want the back story to know who Raiden is and his past. If you don't believe that Raiden can be a badass, watch the fifteen minute MGS4 trailer on Google video or Youtube. It is awesome.

Please visit my message board, I only have 3 members now and I would appreciate it. It is at s10.invisionfree.com/the_world_2.

I really am quite clueless with Kojima creating Raiden... Yes... the "view point" thing... But His "pretty boy" image didnt fit well in those situations...

well... although it was sorta reasonable... i mean... if he did make him more "Snake-like" he'll be hated even more...

(Oh the peoples reaction the first time the MGS4 trailer was shown to the public... ho... ho... i heard Boos all over when "Snake" took off his mask to reveal Raiden)

@twoface- Do you know why Raiden was made into a badass for MGS4? It's because Kojima actually listended to all the complaints and hate mail about Raiden. The only way to make Raiden cool apparently is to turn him into a cyborg ninja like GrayFox, Null and Olga. The Westren world hated him and he was kind of accepted in Japan. Most people thought of him as a sentimental, easily manipulated, weak-minded prettyboy[Which he was when you look at his character].

@Lu Bu- Raiden was originally created to be appealing to females, although why they wanted to make some boy band reject to appeal to girls playing a stealth action game is a question I may never be able to answer.

Metal Gear is fun and if you like movies with some screwed up twists while killing and running from guards then its for you.I dont know how people can hate watching the scenes, its like a present for getting far.How else are you gonna know whats going on and I know some scenes are long but would you rather take a step then a 5 min. scene then one step then a 5 min. scene . Now thats annoying.
Now I'm not starting with Raiden cause he was okay , a bit stupid at times but okay.He looks cool though in MGS4.

There can be no light without darkness . To experience true light one must first know darkness.Darkness is not evil , it shows whether or not u have the strength to overcome it and not be taken over but thats just one opinion. Model V:If u play Jump Ultimate Stars let me know!Seriously!

MGS (Playstation) was an awesome game, felt bad when gray fox got stomped on by metal gear. did you just wish you could launch that stinger missile to put him out of his misery? ah well... but overall a brilliant game to play.

Update list.

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops was released a little while ago for the PSP. This is an actual MGS game for the PSP, not like Acid.

@Tasche- Well he has been in a lot of games, but knowing Hideo he must have something crazy planned. Hideo is just nuts like that.XD And this isn't the first time Snake has died.

And your right, Snake is better than those guys, he's especially better than Master Chief from Halo. Although I don't know about Bond. The original James Bond compared to Snake is kind of a tough choice, but if your comparing Snake to the new James Bond (That blond haired guy) then Snake beats him out easy.
