It may be due to the fact that your ears are receiving extended amounts of concentrated sound. Naturally your ears receive sound over a wider more dispersed area, but earphones focus sound directly into your ears. I have been through that before, I have my headphones on for too long and my ears begin to hurt. Just remember that you need to take breaks when listening to music or otherwise while using any type of headphones.

If you've developed that condition in only a week, I'd be very worried about the state of your ears. I'm also assuming it's your inner ear... you'd be able to tell the difference between uncomfortable earphones and sound-realted problems. :D

I know when I use my headphones (and they are headphones, massive things :D) my ears don't start hurting... but I get tired of them, so I take them off for a while, or I hang it on my neck and turn the volume up a bit. Sometimes that works, too.

I do what Daedalus Machina does. Put the headphones around my neck and crank the volume more! (Omg I typed that too w00t! What does it mean? o_0 It looks Latin to me...) Anyhoo. When I use those headphones that go right into the ear, they hurt my ears. But the ones that curl around and stuff, they aren't too bad. I blast music yet I don't have a problem. I don't blast it for 4 hours at a time though, only the really good songs that are meant to be blasted ^_^

Schala - Daedalus: Greek legend, father of the famed Icarus, and designer of the famed Labyrinth of the Minotaur. Machina - Machine in latin. Ever hear the phrase "Deus ex machina"?

I've the high bass sound from ear phone can make your lungs tighten and kill ya. Nah... i know it just rumor.. But i've tried myself too. One day i've bought a new super big earphone with super bass. When i tried them..I feel a bit pressure on my chest... Then i'm afraid the rumor is true so know i always play musics with normal volume

well those are bad for your ears because they can permantly destroy your hearing, and that would suck! I hardly use them, even thought they work really nice, I kinda like 'em, but just beacuse I havent used a cd player in such a long time. I do most of the music on tv or here on my computer(anime music ^_^) but ppl do develope somesort of system, I dont know how, its their problem for listening to that music so loud..so whatever to them!!

I read in book that using earphones increases the number of bacteria in your ears. dunno if that's really true though...

as much as possible, don't use earphones. try hooking up your mp3 player to a set of speakers. you can get pc speakers for a fair price. the pain your ears get from using earphones too long is the same pain your ears get when you use the phone too long. simply put, don't stick sound producing stuff in your ear for too long.

i think just keep the earphone clean wipe it.. or ya using earphone for too long and loud will hurt your ear.. as our ear drum is soft thin layers.. so if u wanna cure it b4 for i spoil it still can be done, by fixing some kind of device that will regulate.. our ear volume.. there is something like that in the market..

..??Who Throw It??..

*sigh* I'd been typing up this whole thing, and boom... there it went, away for good...

Anyway, about that "too much bass in headphones can get you killed" thing, it's not too much bass in headphones ( you'll never get enough power out of a headphone ), but too much bass out of woofers that can get you killed. People, this is NOT a joke, seriously.

The point is that our lungs are "glued" to our chest by the means of some thin layer of some kind of fluid ( i'm not a doctor, so don't ask me for the details... if you're interested, i'm sure you can easily look it up ). Thanks to this, we can breath. We move our chest upwards, our lungs expand, *insert some physics and biology here*, and voila, we've inhaled... Now, if you're attending a concert, and the bass is excessively loud, then due to the heavy vibrations, your lungs may get detached from your chest, collapse, and thus you will be unable to breath, and eventually die.

Don't worry, this won't happen fast. If you can feel the bass drum kick into your stomach, and your pants dropping on the floor, that means the bass is right. Now, if you start feeling uncomfortable, feel a heavy pressure on your chest, and start having difficulties to breath, go stand back some more, or even leave the venue for your own sake. Beware, this effect doesn't come gradually, your lungs don't collapse in distinct stages... It just happens at once. So, do please be careful.

******************************************************************************

About those headphones... If you really listen to music a lot, and listen to headphones a lot, be sure to invest some money in a decent pair. Yes, it is expensive, but as you all know, you only have one pair of ears.

Avoid cheap in-ears. The sound is usually unclean, they never really fit into your ear canal, and since they don't isolate very good either, you'll be invited to turn up the volume to overcome any external sound source. If you want some good in-ears ( and also TRUE in-ears, cause "in-ear" is in fact a very specific type of ear plugs ), check out the Shure E2/C, or even the 3,4 or 5 series.

If you're looking for some big headphones, try looking for a model with nice soft ( silk coated... mmm... ) cushions that go around your entire ear shells. That way, you won't squeeze your ear shells to your skull, avoiding some extra hurt/fatigue. Also, don't get 'em models with those stinking artificial bass boosts. The sound is very poorly detailed and muddy, which will make you turn up the volume ( unconsciously ) to be able to hear everything clearly. If you have good headphones, you'll be able to hear everything cristal clear, even at very low volumes.

And if you really want to enjoy your music, listen to CD's or LP's, and not MP3's! When encoding audio to MP3 format, you loose a lot of audio information, which in return will result in a bad reverse translation back into audio. The point is that an MP3 signal is full of additional artefacts and stuff which do not appear in the original signal, in addition to having lost a lot of the original signal, which will fatigue your eardrums way sooner then a full quality signal. Of course, you're not obliged to believe me...

MP3's are great for transferring music over the internet, and listening to/discovering some new music on your PC speakers, but please, God please, don't make it the new standard in audio! Throw your iPod away, and start LISTENING to music again, you'll see, it'll be worth it!

(Bring back something from a year ago, lol.)

I have some really good earphones that I got from my cousin (new). When they are in and I have music/game playing, I can't hear anything outside easily (sometimes good). When I listen to music, I like how it seems like the band is playing "in your head" (ie: When I try to figure out where the sound is coming from, I get pointed towards my head, not my ears). That effect also helps getting involved in games, so I can feel more like I'm in it and hear a little better (and respond to fire easier when I can hear where it is...).

As for pain, I haven't had anything major. If my ears to hurt, I take the phones out slightly so they're resting near my ear, but not making that "vacuum" of sound in my head. I also don't listen to music that regularly nor do I blast it loud...

well, if bass are the cause of hurting the ears, why don't you just adjust the bass settings if there is any in your player? I always adjust it on my mp3 player and I don't have any problems.

I've been listening to my mp3 player the whole night and still get can't any ear problems tebayO~ :D or maybe you only feel that since the earphones are inserted too much in your ears?

Usually, you don't get problems through ears, but rather, in the head. If the noise is too loud you either get a headache, or just like what suicidopolis said--the lungs...thing >.>

Well, if your ears are experiencing problems because of the earphones, I recommend replacing your earphone or switching to a "padded" headphone.

If you're experiencing headaches, I suggest taking 30-minute to 1 hour breaks...

4 hours straight? Wow, that's tough.

If you listen to 4 hours every single day, then of course your ears would start to hurt. Continous sound waves are transmitted into your ears, which puts pressure in them. That's why they hurt.

\m/ I don't have to worry about my ears anymore!
4-5hours per day did the job and I can't hear even half as good as I used to xD

So, dear children, don't you take earphones too lightly!
