@D-Ninja- Once again your just saying things I'm already fully aware of. The draft stuff is behind me, but there's still the soldiers being sent over which does include people I know who are in the army. My uncle is with the Canadian Armed Forces which are going to Afghanistan soon, and with this push on Iraq more people I know will likely be going over in battle zones too, this is why I'm depressed. More and more people are coming home in coffins in both areas and that worries me when people I know well are going. Most of the people I know in the U.S are on their way into the heaviest area of resistance while my uncle will be going into the most dangerous area of Afghanistan. |

Dark, I'm sure someone loves you, in a completely heterosexual way... Jonathon, I'm simply saying that because of those downsides that it'll never happen, at least not in this war. It would have to be a major, I mean huge, shift in public opinion for anything like that to happen. They can circulate all the propaganda they want to but that doesn't change the fact that they like to get paid and have jobs, if they really do pass it they're not going to live with either for very long. They're much to selfish to even seriously think about passing it, even if they did I guarantee you that there would be another Vietnam type of protest. If there's anything to be depressed about it's that the US is run by people who like getting paid so much that they have no opinions of their own. Go ahead and say anything you want to, so long as it is within the rules. |

@D-Ninja- You merely telling me things I'm already aware of. I know all about the obvious downsides and harmful effects of drafts, especially in today's world where warfare is no longer about crouching in trenches and charging into death blindly. It's the thought that brings about my depression, even if it's almost impossible there is still the chance and I already have my uncle in Afghanistan, so the thought of more people I know going depresses me. (Some people I know in the US are in the army and now that this new plan is being set they are likely to go. |

@guardianamauka, I'm glad your problem is fixed. @DN, PCs are vexatious things. It'll work out though! @Jonathon, I'm sorry to hear about that. Not to get political, but few things would vex me more than myself or a loved one being drafted for a war with no clear end in sight and on retrospect, no clear reason. It should be pointed out that drafts are not complete death warrants. Hopefully though, it simply won't go into effect. Best of luck. |

DN, the company that made the sound card should have the controllers on their site, key word here is should. I would, however be led to believe that they don't, since that would be the first place to look and if you haven't found them in the time it takes to graduate to a "hasn't yet" phrase then they probably don't have them. Jonathon, there's no way that congress would pass a bill involving the draft. It's meant as a scare tactic, i.e. "if we stay in this war any longer we might have to use a draft of both men and women." There is no logic behind using a draft on both men and women, it would cause a large portion of the working class to be pulled out of production jobs and essentially leave the bottom out of the economy. Add in the fact that if a bill such as this would be passed many a congressperson would be out of a job in two years. |

@Doraemon- I am fully aware of that. My concern as well as my friend's are the Congressman putting this forward who wish to change that enlistment act to include females between age 18 to 26, also there are people who seem to support this forced enlistment. I believe Congressman Rangel is the main supporter of this change in enlistment policy and draft being re-instated. Like I said, I know this has a great chance of not being put into effect since a draft is usually meant for serious last resort times (Such as the World Wars) but it's the possibility of it going through that makes me worried. After all, crazier things have been done in politics, you never know what their going to do. |

Re: The Depression Thread V3

I don't think your friend has anything to worry about because selective service only applies to males between the ages of 18-25. According to the selective service system: "Almost all male U.S. citizens, and male aliens living in the U.S., who are 18 through 25, are required to register with Selective Service. It's important to know that even though he is registered, a man will not automatically be inducted into the military. In a crisis requiring a draft, men would be called in sequence determined by random lottery number and year of birth. Then, they would be examined for mental, physical and moral fitness by the military before being deferred or exempted from military service or inducted into the Armed Forces." (http://www.sss.gov/FSwho.htm) Even if that were not the case Bush has more than enough soldiers to handle the 20,000 in the already existing armed forces, not to mention reservists who are probably also going back to Iraq. ![]() |

I'm feeling a little depressed, although whether it's because of the current medication or this thought I don't know. There's a girl I know in the US who's 18 and worried about the implementation of a draft (Forced Enlistment) in the Army due to Bush's plan to send 20+ thousand soldiers to Iraq and because of some people believing it to be put into action. She's worried that she'll be drafted and have to go to Iraq because of this plan. This is causing me to get a little worried and depressed as well. I know all about draft and how it would be more harmful than helpful in today's world but still I feel uneasy. (Although things like this tend to stick in my mind and make me feel bad all the time, no matter how small they may be. That's just how I am.) This would also affect other people I know in the US. Like I said, things just tend to stick in my mind for a while no matter how small. Also I'm currently on some medication for medical reasons so that might be causing this 'overreaction' per say. It's more of a fear or depression of the possibility of the plan. It wouldn't affect me, but people I know. |

Wolf, you're almost too humble, take pride in what you say because it's right. Every action has inevitable repercussions no matter how small. I especially like your last line, "I may never lead the grandest of lives but I will be content with the knowledge that my end is my own because I chose the way to get there." It's full of truth and honesty, and subtle finality. Dragonfly, no need to sweat, what you said is as pertinent as anything wolf or I could've said. You just need to learn how to spell beginning is all. DN, I take it your sound card is either broken or non-existent. Considering that sound is nice when it's used in a rhythmic fashion, and is known in a few circles as "music." |
