Heh heh, a spider. Every spider I run into is squished. I would love to take on this spider. I would of piped it to death. From what I've learned in Mystical Ninja, there is nothing more deadly than a pipe. I am interested to find out how the spider comes into the story, I mean the story suddenly changed with its appearence. *the last to chapters were suspense, thriller chapters to me. |

Kay: Yup... far too late for me T.T And confusing is goood... it'll make you read it more, see? XD Yuki: Didn't leave it it till the last minute this time... just the last hour XD Jomunga: Pipes are so cool... they are underrated T.T Thank you all for your comments, I like seeing how people react to this ^_^ Anyway, for chapter 9... ^_^ "...It's nothing much..." Suddenly, the lights went out. Something dark ran across Akina's window from outside, and a familiar trilling sound was heard. "Remember how I said I had to be home? That's why." Chapter IX: Darkness Akina decreased the gap between her and Yukio. "...Yukio-senpai...?" "I'm not sure what it is, it was in that old warehouse a while ago. Me and Sorano went in it, even though she said not to, and then it ended getting Sorano when I didn't see it and put her in this cocoon thing on the ceiling. I was trying to get her out of it at home, and that's why I was gone for so long." "...What is it?" "I'm not sure, I've never seen it yet. Just heard it and seen a dark blur. I think it's some sort of spider, though." "A spider...? Please don't let it be a spider..." "You aren't scared of spiders, are you?" The room darkened and brightened as something darted across Akina's window again. Akina had wrapped her arms around Yukio's arm in the second it was dark. "...I'll take that as a yes." Nothing more was said, and the two listened to it crawl along the walls of the house in search of an opening. The was a crash in the house that sounded like broken glass, and the creature had made its way to Akina's door nearly instantly. It didn't seem to know how to open the door, and even though it tried to fit under the door it simply couldn't squeeze through something that small. Then it tried ramming the door, but stopped after two hits. Akina was holding onto Yukio's arm so tightly, it nearly cut off his circulation. By the sounds in the hall, the creature was searching for a nearby alternate entrance, and eventually some sort of moveable board was moved. Thumping was heard in the ceiling, and it scurried around up there with amazing speed. Yukio looked down at Akina. "The attic?" "...It sounds like it," Akina replied hardly making a sound. She was staring at the ceiling with dilated pupils, keeping her eyes fixed at the source of the noise, wherever it went. "It's so close to us... Senpai, why didn't it break the window in here...?" "I don't think it has enough strength to do that without a running start. It has a ramming addiction," he added with a wink. Akina seemingly ignored the last comment and kept her eyes on the ceiling. "If it can't break the door, then we should be safe. You don't need to be so tense, Akina." "But what if it gets in here? It doesn't sound weak at all..." "Well, if it does the same thing it did to a corpse in that warehouse, it'll eat us alive." "What!?" she whispered. "How can you be so calm about this!?" Tears were slowly filling her eyes. "Because it can't reach us. It tried and gave up on breaking the door, it can't break the window, and there's no hole in the ceiling. We'll be safe, eventually it'll give up on us, too." "...Yukio-senpai, it's not in the ceiling anymore!" Suddenly the doorknob started rattling. Yukio dashed and held the doorknob still, which only showed the creature that was the way in, and it made attempts at opening the door with renewed strength. "Yukio-senpai! What should I do?" "Get the chair from your desk and shove it under the doorknob," he said with gritted teeth. "After that, get the heaviest thing you can find and press it against the chair." "O-Okay, I'll try!" Akina grabbed the chair and put the backrest of it under the doorknob, though she made sure Yukio still had some space around his hands. She began pushing her bed, slowly, toward the chair. With her small amount of strength, it took less than a minute, which felt like an eternity to them both, to get it near the chair. "Okay Akina, when I tell you to, push the bed as hard as you can. You ready?" "Y-Yeah, I'm ready..." Yukio got the backrest of the chair directly under the doorknob, which limited the space with which he would use to grab the doorknob with, and yelled "Now!" Akina shoved the bed as hard as she could, and it got the chair firmly in place. Yukio let go of the doorknob slowly, and the creature twisted the doorknob all the way the moment Yukio's hand was off, but it couldn't open the door with the chair and bed in the way. Akina and Yukio both but their backs against the wall opposite the door, and planted their feet against the bed. Yukio looked at Akina, who had her head held back, her eyes shut, and was totally out of breath. "That bad was hard for you to move, huh?" "Yeah... it was... really heavy..." she said between breaths. "Well, the door problem is fixed. Now all that's left to worry about is the window." "...Yukio-senpai, if it's a spider, how can it grab the doorknob?" "I never thought of that... it has a surprisingly strong grip, no way any sort of spider could hold on like that... Unless it has hands." "...You mean it's humanoid, then?" "Or it has something really sticky on its arms." "...It's smart, isn't it?" "Yup, I think it's been learning ever since the first time I've seen it." Suddenly Akina gasped. "My parents!" Yukio sat quietly for a moment, thinking hard. "...It's either being quiet or has left, I haven't heard anything after we got the bed in place. Of course, I wasn't really listening either. If it does to your parents that same thing it did to Sorano, it'll put them in some sort of cocoon... Possibly for a later meal." "What about the corpse you saw?" "I think it ate that until it had its fill... There was still half of the guy left... But then why did it leave it out instead of putting it into a cocoon like it did Sorano?" "...Maybe Sorano did it to herself. You haven't spoken to her since the warehouse, right?" "That may be it... That cocoon was pretty solid, it'd be good for defense." "...But how would Sorano do that?" "I'm not sure... I'm not sure about much of anything yet. We just need some answers, and we have none of those yet." The room darkened, and the two looked at the window instantly. There was nothing there, it was simply a power out. Akina turned to Yukio and said, "Wasn't the power already out?" "That's what I thought, but things are definitely darker now than they were before. Maybe the creature cut out the power to your house only..." "Is it that smart?" "I don't know again. If only we could catch it, that'd answer a lot." "What!? You're gonna catch it!?" "Maybe, if I can find a safe way to do it. It's gonna be hard, though." "Don't catch it, Senpai! It'll hurt you... if it can break through a window, it can get through whatever you make..." "It broke through the window because it had a running start... and whatever I make won't be strong enough, yes... so that's why I won't make it." Then Yukio stood up and walked towards the door. "Now, let's get this bed out of the way." Akina jumped up and pulled Yukio back toward the wall. "Yukio-senpai, be careful! It could still be out there!" "And what are we gonna do? Nothing's made a noise for a while now, and if it is out there then it's gonna get your parents." "...But...I don't want you getting hurt..." "I'll be fine, don't worry Akina." Akina let go of Yukio, and he pushed the bed back into it's original position. Then he took the chair and put it back near the desk, and opened the door quickly. Nothing came in. "See, Akina, it's fine!" Akina just stared out into the hall, then ran to Yukio's side. Her face showed nothing but fear and worry. "Okay, let's go and see if your parents are okay." "...It's so dark, I can't see anything..." "We don't need sight, we can use sound. Be as quiet as you can, and if you hear anything let me know." "A-All right," Akina said holding Yukio's arm again. "...You love my arm, don't you Akina?" "It's not your arm... I feel better when I know you're around..." "If it makes you feel better, you can hold on my arm all you want... Just don't get too attached to it." "Sen...pai...?" "Nevermind. Where's your parent's room?" "It's down the hall, right next to us. It's one door down, see it?" "I can hardly see anything." "Umm, yeah..." Yukio tiptoed the few steps to Akina's parent's room, with Akina following close behind. He felt around the door until he found the doorknob, and a small twist of it revealed that the door was locked. He gave a light tap on the door, receiving no response. Akina quietly whispered under the door. "Mom...? Dad...?" There was some moving inside, and Noburo let out a moanful "Akina...?" "Dad...? Were you asleep?" "Yeah, I was..." He groaned. "What do you need, Aki'? "Is mom there?" "No, she's in the kitchen..." "The kitchen!?" she said to Yukio, her voice getting close to yelling. Yukio ran back down the hall with his left arm straight out backwards for Akina to hold on to, and they both ended up in the kitchen. "Mom!? Mom, are you here?" Sumie came out from hiding with a frying pan in hand. "Akina? You're safe?" "Yeah mom, thanks to Yukio-senpai. Are you okay?" "I'm fine, you don't need to worry about me. Who broke through the window? He was fast, I know that much." Akina looked toward the floor, unsure of what to say. "...We... We th--" Yukio cut off Akina and spoke on his own. "It was just some thief. We heard him break the window, climb through, and come up to Akina's room. After that, I'm not sure what he did, Akina and I kept him from getting in. You sure you didn't space out or something to make it seem faster?" "I don't know, if you heard it like that I'll assume you're right. Did he take anything?" "I don't think so, he never got in Akina's room, and he went straight up there first thing after he came in. So I think he ran off after hearing someone in the house." "Ah, that's good. Akina, do you know if your father ever flipped the breaker switch?" "The breaker...? Is that why the power went out?" "Yeah, I was running too many things in here. Lazy good-for-nothing father of yours... Could you go flip it for me?" "Sure, okay mom. C'mon, Yukio-senpai!" Akina led the way back into the hall, and removed a picture on the wall that had the breaker switches behind it. "Ummm... Mom?" Akina yelled to the kitchen. "All of the switches are on!" "You sure about that, Akina?" her mom yelled back. Yukio put his hand against his head, then whispered, "Akina, remember the power went out around here? For everyone?" Akina's face reddened, then she yelled back again, "I think I know the problem! The power's out in the neighborhood!" "Well, that'd explain why it's so dark!" her mom called back. "Akina," Yukio said quietly, "You seem to be better. Earlier you were all quiet and depressed." Akina remained motionless and silent for a while, then said, "That's because you're here." She latched herself to his arm again, with a bright smile on her face. * * * * * * * * Kane was at home reading a book when his doorbell rang. "I'm coming, hold up for a sec!" he shouted. Making his way through the house, he came to the door and opened it. Mamoru was at the door, standing in the cover of his porch, soaking wet. "Whoa, Kurotaki! You've shown some emotion!" "I need to speak with you." "Huh? What d'ya need to talk about?" "Things of a private matter. Come with me." "Well, just a moment, let me get my umbrella," he said reaching for his umbrella left near the door. "There is no time to waste, be fast about it." "Yes, sir," he said hopping out the door and following Mamoru. "Where are we going on this fine night?" "To Hashikawa Kanaye." "I thought you said this was private..." "It is. Only the three of us must know." "This is awfully human for you, Kurotaki. What's the occasion?" "I said I need to speak with you and Hashikawa. Say no more." "Okay, so maybe you aren't as human as I thought you were being." Mamoru said nothing to that, and the two walked to Kanaye's house, with Mamoru being expressionless and silent, and Kane humming songs all the way there. Once there, Kanaye was sitting on his porch. "You two sure took your time." "You knew we were coming? Did Mr. Pokerface here tell you we were coming?" "No, I knew you guys were coming. So when's Mamoru gonna start the conversation?" Mamoru kept his expressionless face, and looked at Kanaye. "Kanaye. You know what must be done." "Yeah, and I don't even need to be in this conversation." "You don't know something else, then." "Uh-huh... like what?" "Someone must be killed. There's one life that must be removed." Kane just sat there in silence, with his jaw halfway to the ground and "OMG" written on his face. "There's someone dying every ten seconds. Care to be more specific?" "You know well who I speak of." "Yeah, I was just hoping you'd tell Kane." "You do not want to tell him?" "No, of course not. I don't wanna be responsible for what he does upon hearing it." "He must be told. And you must be the one to tell him. You know that as well." "Uh-huh, I was just hoping I got it wrong. Hey Kane." Kane slowly turned to look at Kanaye with his same deformed expression. "...W-W-What? Who's gonna die?" Kanaye lowered his face, hiding his eyes. "Someone you know... in fact, someone you know very well." "What exactly is the point of telling me this?" "...You must be the one to do it." * * * * * * * * Yukio and Akina were still at Akina's, with the power still out. "Yukio-senpai, when do you have to be home?" "After I know where that beast is. I need to catch it, and I have a plan..." "It's not here, Senpai... We've looked everywhere..." Yukio chuckled, and asked as a joke, "Do you want me to leave or something?" "No! No, it's just... I'm scared of that thing... I don't want you to find it." "Don't worry, I'll be fine." "Senpai! You always say you'll be fine! You don't even know what that thing is, for all you know it could rip your head off a second after it sees you! And you don't even care!" "Look, the only way it has done any damage so far is with a running start. So as long as I stay in a small place with turns, I'll be fine." "Where in the world is a place like that!? Just leave it alone, and hope it won't come after us anymore...! You don't even know if Sorano is okay..." "You worry too much, Akina, don't be so scared." "And you aren't scared enough! Do you think you'll live forever?" "No, something's gonna get me, just not today." "And why not today!? Today is just the same as any other day! You need fear in your life, Yukio-senpai, otherwise you'll end up dying because of your recklessness!" "I won't die! I can't die! You're so scared of everything, you'll never live!" "...You start to care about your life after you nearly die, and then someone tries to rape you." "All the more reason to enjoy life, it shows how short it is." "...You're just the same, Senpai. You used to not care about anything, but then you were happier... Turns out you still don't care about anything, you're just more outgoing." "I can't be perfect, you know." "I don't expect you to be perfect, not at all. But I'd rather have you care than be happy..." "You think I don't care? If I didn't why would I be trying to get this thing?" "You care because others are being saved, but you don't care about yourself. Keep yourself alive, Senpai... Don't die, for me..." "Okay, if you really want me stop, fine, I will." "...Thanks, Yukio-senpai. Are you hungry? I have some takeout in the fridge, if you want..." "Sure, that sounds good." "It might be a little warm, because of the power out... Our fridge won't keep things cold very long." "I'm so hungry I'll eat anything, regardless of temperature." "Okay! I'll go get some for you!" Akina ran off to the kitchen in the dark, pulling Yukio by his arm as always. Once there, however, her cheerfulness subsided. "Akina? What's wrong?" "...Y-Yukio-senpai... Do you see that, in the dark?" "...I can't see anything there, it's just black." "Well, the black moved... and it has six limbs." Yukio focused in on it, and it was certainly the creature that had been after them before. But this time, it was just laying on the ground, slowly moving toward the window it broke earlier. It looked up with faintly glowing red eyes, that were round and full of sorrow, and when it realized it was being watched its eyes grew brighter and narrower. It multiplied its speed greatly, went up the wall and on the ceiling, then dashed out the window. "...Yukio-senpai... It didn't hurt us..." "Yeah... This changes everything. If it wasn't trying to eat us in your room, then why was it trying to get in there? And there's still that whole cocoon thing... This has just gotten much more complicated." "...What is going on? This was just dumped on us; First Sorano, then Mamoru-senpai, then Kanaye-san, and now this... why did it all happen at the same time?" "I wish I knew, Akina. I wish I knew." * * * * * * * * It was a wonderful morning, and the grass was green and moist from the rain in the night before. There were only a few clouds in the sky, wispy and delicate, floating in grace and silence. Birds were out, singing their morning cheer to all who ventured outside, and the sun was bright and warm. All Kane could see was the task at hand, the one he was given by Mamoru and Kanaye. He thought of nothing but that, the one he had to kill, and the two wouldn't give their reason why. He stopped by Yukio's house on the way to school, but it looked like he had left already, so he went to school, desperate for a way to stall. Nothing came up. "There must be something that'll change what they said, things can't be like this," he kept on telling himself. But no one came by him to change his task, and he wound up at school. He looked around for a while for his target, then saw Yukio. "Hey Watanabe~!" "Hmm? What's up Kane?" "I was just wondering... do you know where I could find Akina?" * * * * * * * * Don't worry, I got an answer to this stuff... Just wait XD |

Okay okay okay, got it done now ^_^ Sorry for the wait! "Hey Watanabe~!" "Hmm? What's up Kane?" "I was just wondering... do you know where I could find Akina?" Chapter X: Answers "Akina? She's at home, I think. If not, check her classroom. What do you need her for?" "I need to talk with her about something..." Yukio stared at Kane for a second in silence, waiting for more details. Kane didn't say anything more, then charged off down the hall toward Akina's classroom. "I'm not getting this," Kane thought. "Why did Kanaye have to tell me? Why me...? Why does it have to be me that does the killing...? What have I done to make me so important? Well, I can see all sorts of reasons for that, but that's not the point." Suddenly Kane bumped into someone. It was Kanaye, and he caught himself expertly after he was run into. "Kane, if it wasn't you, it'd be someone else who'd think the exact same thing. You had the short straw, so deal with it." "...How did you kn--" "Don't bother asking, I already know." "H--" "You know how I know everything, you're just too ignorant to accept it." "Jeez, I'm--" "Getting sick of me, I know." "A--" "And me doing this isn't helping, I know. And before you say it, I do say 'I know' too much." Kane just waved Kanaye off and walked slowly to Akina's class. He didn't want to do this, but if he didn't... * * * * * * * * Sorano heard someone knock at the door early in the morning. It was Akina, dressed, cheerful and ready for school. "So~ra~no~! You ready for school, or do you need some help?" "I think I'm ready..." "All righty then, let's go~!" Akina skipped out the door with Sorano following behind timidly. Sorano glanced back at the door with uncertainty. "What about Yukio...?" "He comes to school later, I need to get you there early so you can see where everything goes." Sorano nodded and said nothing. "Sorano, people are gonna be making mean comments about you and stuff at first, you know that right?" "Yeah, I'm a little scared." Akina swung her arms up in the air and put her hands behind her neck. "I think someone heard about it, and by now it'll be all over the school. If people are touching your wings too much, don't hesitate to let them know that you want them to buzz off, okay~?" "Yes, I'll let them know. Hey Akina, d--" She was interrupted by four male students heading to school whooping and whistling at her from across the street. "...I was going to ask if I'd be accepted there, but it looks like those guys won't mind me." "It's gonna be rough for ya the first few days, but they'll get use to you, don't worry." Sorano looked toward the ground and nothing was said until Akina broke the silence after a few seconds. "So what do you think you're gonna like learning about?" "I'm not sure... I heard about art, that sounds fun. Can I make things out of clay?" "Eh, I'm not sure. That's usually for littler kids." "Oh, okay... What about chemistry?" "You can try that, it's kind of complicated though. I'd have thought that you would liked meteorology, so you can fly easier or something." "Yeah, I might get into that too. I'm not sure, I haven't tried anything yet..." "We'll find out after you've tried it, so don't worry too much yet," Akina said with her frequently used wink. Sorano looked up and smiled, and gave a quick nod. One of the students from the four that cheered Sorano on yelled out, "Hey angel, can you fly?" Sorano looked up to Akina with an indecisive expression, and after Akina gave a nod Sorano ran up the sidewalk and took the to the sky. Students everywhere were cheering, gasping, or simply staring. Sorano continued to fly around for a little while, making sure to stay near Akina who was still walking, and eventually landed ahead of Akina on a pole of a chain link fence to rest, her feet together and hands beside them, but she had to keep flapping her wings slowly to stay on top of the pole. Akina ran up to her with renewed joy. "Sorano, it's even cooler the second time I see you fly! Do it more, do it more!" Sorano smiled bashfully and looked to the sky. "I need a rest, but I'll be back up in a little bit." "Wouldn't be easier to rest if you're not flapping your wings, though?" "Mm," she replied affirmatively, "I suppose." She hopped down and landed behind Akina, then hurried to get to her side. "Akina, was it bad of me to fly like that? I mean, now everyone knows about me." "People would know about you in a few minutes, when you introduce yourself, and if you fly they'll know you aren't a fake. You worry a lot, you should lighten up~!" "You're right, Akina. Thanks for bein--" Sorano jumped and spun around. There was one of Akina's classmates with his finger pointed to Sorano, a few inches behind her. "Akina! He poked me!" Akina gave a nice hard whack on the poker's head, and asked Sorano, "Where'd he poke ya?" "On my back, where the hole is for my wings to go through. Why'd he do that...?" "Oh, don't worry about him. The perverted idiot is always poking people. Just be glad he poked you in your back, that's not where he's poked me before." She turned around and gave him a cold stare, then resumed walking with Sorano. "You mean, he poked--" She jumped and screamed again, only this time with more fear and her hand on her behind. "Right there!" the offender yelled and ran off. Akina grabbed Sorano's far shoulder, and pulled her ear to her mouth and whispered, "Every time he gets close to you, make sure to hit him somewhere reeally hard before he does that again," then let go and smiled as if nothing happened. "Are you sure I can just hit--" She was interrupted once again by some guy nearby telling her to fly some more. Sorano looked to the ground dejectedly. "...Why does everyone wanna see me fly...? And why can't I finish my sentences today...?" Akina got behind Sorano and lifted her up in an attempt to throw her into the sky for a boost, and nearly fell over when she discovered Sorano's weight. "Whoa, Sorano! You're so light, how did you do it!?" "I-I've always been like this, but what are you doing!?" Akina stood motionless holding Sorano, who had her arms wrapped around her knees, off the ground by grabbing around her waist, and she started lifting her up and down. "So... Light... Heh, this'll make it easy..." she added deviously. "...Easy...? To do what?" Akina's eyes narrowed and a wide grin spread across her face. She lifted Sorano up to her back, ran for a few feet, and tossed Sorano recklessly as far as she could, which was less than four feet despite her determination. Sorano fluttered for a second, then barely avoided landing the sidewalk as she ascended to the air. There were more reactions this time than before, mainly cheers after the shock of the first flight had passed. The school was nearby, so she flew to the roof this time, held onto the railing, and turned to Akina with a fierce look. "Akina, what was that for!?" she shouted angrily. "You got more fans~! Doing this will decrease the amount of people that might think you're a fake!" "Well, yeah, but..." "Just come on down, and you'll see what I mean before class!" Sorano let go of the railing and dropped to the cement below, giving a few flaps of her wings to soften the impact. "Okay, now after you get to class," Akina advised, "Take an empty seat without introducing yourself. I've always wanted to see what a teacher would do in a case like that!" "I won't get in trouble, will I?" "Nah, you won't. If any trouble is involved, I'll take full responsibility." Sorano didn't reply and followed Akina into the school, and listened intently as Akina pointed out each room and how the school is shaped, just like she had done many times before. After the tour, Akina took Sorano back to their classroom, which by now had three people in it, playing and talking about recent events. Akina pointed to a seat behind Akina and to the left, told her no one occupied it and that she could use it, unless Etsu said differently, and they both sat down. Sorano could hear the all three of the students talking about her, two of which were male. "Her wings are so big, Shoyo's gonna have a hard time sitting behind her," the girl said. "Tch, he gets mad when someone looks at him funny!" one of the guys replied. There was some brief snickering, and one of them noticed Sorano curl up slightly. "Shoyo doesn't sit there," a deep voiced boy said, "You guys are dorks! Kiyomi sits behind where the angel is now, Shoyo's in a different class altogether!" The other three all groaned and made comments about him ruining the fun, and he protested that if that happened to one of them they'd be ticked off, and this might've been her first time on earth and they should treat her politely. They replied with sort of an annoyed grunt, and they switched topics to other random things. A tall girl came in silently, didn't wave to anyone or look at anyone, and took her seat slightly to the right of the exact middle of the classroom. Her hair was very light blue, almost white, and it was pulled into a ponytail near the top of her head. From there, it went in an arch behind her back, and came to a point near her waist. Some hair on the right side of her head hung down in front of her ear in much the same fashion as her ponytail, her bangs were split down the middle and hung beside her head to avoid getting in her eyes, and the way all of her hair looked appeared to have not been cut in a while. Her eyes were wide and thin, and after she sat down she stared at Akina with nothing but a small amount of hate in her gaze. Sorano glanced at Akina and whispered, "Akina... I don't think that girl likes you very much." "Hmm? What girl? I don't see anyone but that girl over there," she said pointing to the group of three behind them. "That girl, in the middle with the light hair." "Sorano...? No one's there, you sure you're not seeing things?" Sorano looked back, and plain as day the girl was there. "Akina, there's someone there! She has a long ponytail that's light blue, and she's staring right at you. You don't see her?" Akina looked all around the entire classroom, and no one was in there except five; herself, Sorano, and the three pranksters. "I don't see anyone but us, and I don't recognize anyone by your description. If she ever does anything suspicious, let me know all right?" "Okay," Sorano replied half-consciously. Sorano looked around the room to make sure she could remember it if she left, and after a while Kane came in. "Hey, um, Akina," he said quietly, "I need to talk with you. Somewhere alone, preferably." "Uh, sure. Sorano, I'm gonna be gone for a while, I'll be back for class starts. Remember to be nice, and," she looked toward the back of the room, "You three better not pull anything!" Sorano nodded, gave a quiet "See ya later," and Akina followed Kane up to the roof. "Okay Kane, tell me what's going on." Kane stepped up close to Akina, looked into her face, and said in all seriousness, "What I'm about to tell you must be kept secret, especially from Mamoru and Kanaye. You absolutely will not tell them this, got it?" "Kane...?" "Promise me, Akina." "I promise." Kane turned around and took a couple steps away from Akina. "Akina... You know there's something up with those two, right? Mamoru and Kanaye?" "Yeah...?" "Mamoru isn't from around here... He's an angel, rejected from heaven and cursed. Kanaye has some link to heaven, and someone has been feeding him information for quite some time. That's how he knows everything." Akina stood motionlessly, and forced herself to talk after some silence. "Mamoru-senpai's... an angel? Why was he rejected, and how does Kanaye know what we're going to say? We have free will, it doesn't make sense." "Mamoru believes that angels must destroy the leaders of humans, and that'll put humans in fear. In fear, they are stupid and clueless, running entirely by instinct instead of logic. And, about that free will you speak of... We don't have it. The angels above run everything in our lives, from what we think to what we decide. Each angel has a human counterpart that they run, and they can commune with other angels to get us together, and choose who loves who and what we say to each other. Absolutely everything we do was predetermined by some freak, playing us like game pieces in a twisted game of checkers. And someone is feeding all the information to Kanaye, and that's how he knows what we'll say and when." "Kane... This is a lot to take in, how can you just drop something like this on me and expect me to believe it?" "Today, Yukio will make a comment about the weather after school, Rini will be run over by a car, and Shiramori will praise one of his students." "And why in the world would you know what's going on?" "Because I was given the power to rule over someone, just like them. Mamoru is an outcast, but he still has his powers, and he gave me his power of ruling over someone's life. It's some depressed kid in Poland that Mamoru was yanking around like some toy. He got bored of it, deemed me 'Logical enough to see his way,' and gave him to me. I can tell what others are planning now, too... The only ones that can escape predetermination are angels themselves and those who can somehow break the order their split gave them." "...This is a lot to take in... and what is a 'split,' exactly?" "A split is either the angel that bosses around someone or the someone the angel is bossing around. Like at first, Mamoru was the split of the Polish kid, however he isn't anymore. He gave me his split, which I assume is some sort of heresy in heaven. If you can break the order you've been set on just once, the whole thing will fall apart, just like a chain. The events are set before you're born, and you start climbing the moment you breathe your first breath of air. And you see, if you break a single link in the chain above you, the whole thing falls apart and you'll be on your own track. Since I've told you this, I've broken your chain and you are now free. Everything you do will be influenced by what I've told you, and since I wasn't supposed to have told you, you're walking by yourself now." "So... Sorano is a split of someone...?" "Yeah, she's an angel, so she's a split. I don't know who her split is though, they never told me. You get all this?" Akina was speechless. How in the world was she supposed to believe something as ludicrous as this? Then again, how was she supposed to believe an angel was at her school, that a black creature tried to break into her room, or that someone invisible tried to kill her? "Oh yeah," Kane added as an afterthought, "They said that a life was not supposed to be on this earth. I'm supposed to kill someone..." "...W-Who is it?" "You. And they're gonna kill Sorano themselves, and from there it's gonna be a killing spree. Yukio's on their target list as well. Something has to be done, Akina, before everyone's dead." "Kane, Sorano said that she saw someone in my class. It was a girl that I couldn't see and no one else commented on, and she was staring at me. Do you know who that is?" "No, I've never heard of anything like that. And class is going to start soon, so you better get back before Sorano gets lonely. I... have my own thing I need to do." "...What do you mean by 'Your own thing?' Kane, tell me..." Kane turned around and stared at Akina straight in the eyes again. "Once Mamoru sees you alive, he's gonna find me wherever I am and I'm going to go through things no human should have to go through. So before I go through that, I need you to save yourself and everyone you know from Mamoru and Kanaye." After he said that, he spun around and ran to the railing, pulled himself up it, and jumped off the roof to the road with his arms and legs spread straight out. * * * * * * * * Nkay, thither thou goest. Things have been answered for ya ^_~ |

some things have been answered and other things became a mystery.. thats cool!^_^ "playing us like game pieces in a twisted game of checkers" i think people tend to use "chess" rather than checkers, cause i believe chess is more...like, dramatic?..XD |

Yup, I know about the checkers thingy, but I figured that chess is overused, and most importantly: only one color of a checkers board is used, the other is totally useless... Thou hast noticed something odd and pointed it out, and that's good... |

Chapter XI: Mysteries "Kane!!" Akina screamed, running to the railing where he jumped off. She peered down and saw Kane's lifeless body on the side of the road, with blood splattered everywhere around him... This couldn't be real, it was another hallucination. It simply had to be... There's no way all he said could be true, yet if it was and this wasn't a hallucination, why did he kill himself? Was he hallucinating as well? It seemed a lot of people had been having hallucinations of some sort for a while, but recently they had stopped... was this a hallucination as well? Or was this reality? Was there a difference between the two? Cars passing by braked near Kane's body, some simply going around and speeding off to avoid being suspects in a murder case with others slowing down, trying to deduce what happened. Some of the people who had stopped their cars were pointing at Akina, who was kneeling behind the railing with hands on the bars, sobbing into her legs. Too much was happening at once, some of these things couldn't be real. How often in life does one thing happen at a time in a steady pace, and how often is it that multiple life-changing events happen in a few days? This simply couldn't happen, and it can't be happening right now... And with Kane committing suicide, she couldn't get any more answers from him... Why would he hold his head in pain at random times? If things were set on a predetermined path, how could Mamoru hand over his split to Kane? Wouldn't that have messed something up with other's predetermination? How did Kanaye know what Mamoru was going to say if angels are free from predetermination? Who was that girl that Sorano saw back in class? Why was Sorano on Earth instead of being in heaven? Does she have a split? When is Rini going to be run over, and how can she stop it? What was that black creature that was prowling around the night before? If Mamoru was going to torture Kane because he didn't kill Akina, why couldn't Mamoru kill her himself? Far too many things remained unknown and unanswered, and she had to fix things before they got out of hand and everything on earth began falling apart. Akina quickly composed herself and ran back to her classroom, bumping into people and not noticing it all the way there. Sliding open the door and staring at Sorano with a look of fear and uncertainty, Akina slowly walked up to her, took her hand and pulled her outside. "Akina? What's going on?" Sorano asked while nearly tripping over her own legs at being pulled so hard. Akina spun around and put her hands on Sorano's shoulders. "Sorano, listen to me. Do you know anything, anything at all, about Mamoru-senpai?" "No, I haven't even seen him yet," she said with a look of worry and confusion. "And you're telling the truth, right? You know nothing at all about him?" "I promise, I don't know! Tell me what's going on Akina!" "Do you know anything about splits and angels?" Sorano's pupils tightened and darted around in tiny jumps, staying mostly in the center of her eye, as if she had known about it before and was trying to pull back the strings of memory to meet each other. "Sorano, you have a split, right? And you've lived with other angels, and talked with them about your split?" "...I...I don't know, maybe... It-It's almost coming together, but I can't remember...!" "Look, we need to find Rini before she's dead, too. She's going to be run over today, and we have to keep her safe... Kane's killed himself already, we can't afford any more deaths..." Sorano suddenly looked up as if she remembered everything. "Kane... is dead? I feel like... I expected it... but... I don't know, everything is so mixed up right now..." "What!? You expected it!?" Akina shouted near the top of her lungs. Sorano closed her eyes and put her hands over her ears, curled up into a ball, and said no more. Akina ran off to find Etsu before her child was going to meet the pavement, leaving Sorano behind to gather her thoughts. No matter where she looked, Etsu was gone; she was no where in the school at all. Even after the bell rang and all the students left to their classes, Etsu was not here.... Maybe Rini was run over already, and Etsu was at the hospital... Akina ran out the front door, and after hearing some cars honk their horns, she realized she forgot about Kane. She ran to the scene of his death, where Etsu was on her cellphone calling the police, with Rini hiding behind her mom's legs. "Etsu-sensei!" Akina called out. "Is Rini-chan okay?" "Rini!? There's a dead body in front of us, and you worry about someone who's perfectly fine!?" she shouted, trying to hold back from shouting right in Akina's face at the top of her lungs. "'Kina, I'm fine..." Rini said quietly. "I almost got hurt though, I was in the street and a car almost ran over me, but when Kane fell down it turned and missed me... 'Kina, is Kane dead?" There was an uncomfortable pause, after which Akina quietly replied "...I don't know, I think he is..." "Be quiet, you two," Etsu said harshly, making a completely visible attempt to press her phone into her ear. "You won't need the police," Akina said quietly with tears in her eyes. "He killed himself... I saw him jump off myself." "The police are required for any death of any sort, you idiot," Etsu replied. "But..." "If you're so qualified, here!" Etsu shoved her phone into Akina's face, let her take it, and sat on the curb to calm down. Akina held the phone up to her ear with both hands and listened to the policeman on the phone asking where Etsu was. "Umm, excuse me...? I don't think we'll a criminal investigation... he jumped off himself..." A gruff, male voice replied firmly with "Are you sure? Did you see him?" With tears welling up and her voice faltering, she answered postively. "Now then, tell me what happened from start to finish." "I... I can't say exactly..." "Why not? Did you push him off?" "No! No, I didn't push him...! It's just... too complicated." "Do you at least know why he committed suicide?" "Because... Because someone was going to torture him..." "Do you know who? Has he been tortured before?" Akina was slowly beginning to lose control, and sobs were starting to make their way out of her. "I don't think he was tortured before... and my classmate was going to torture him... Please, just get an ambulance over here...!" "Miss, we have an ambulance on the way right now, just keep calm. Now, which classmate was going to torture him?" "K-Kurotaki Mamoru..." "And do you have any proof of that?" At this point, Akina didn't know what to say. She had no material proof, yet Kane said it was so and Mamoru's personality and mindset agrees with it... But if she said that, the police wouldn't believe her. What should she do...? "I asked you if you have any proof of that, miss." "Uh, no, I'm afraid not... But I wouldn't be surprised if Mamoru-senpai did kill someone, his attitude is so... like that..." "Attitude won't be enough, we'd need evidence that he would." "Yeah, I know..." Akina heard the ambulance getting near, and informed the policeman that it was arriving and she'd leave. "Hey, wait one second miss," the officer said through the phone, "I'm gonna have to treat you as a suspect. You saw him fall, right?" "Yes, but... I didn't kill him...!" "Look, I believe you, but I'll at least need to know your name and phone number. Could you tell me that, if nothing else?" She quietly said her name and phone number, trying as hard as possible to suppress her tears. "...O...kay, got it down-- Hey wait, didn't you file a rape charge recently?" She could feel herself losing control of her emotions even further, yet made a superb attempt to conceal it. "Yes..." "Well, someone was calling your home yesterday, but the phone was busy and the power went out, so we couldn't reach you. We're running the DNA from the saliva we retrieved from your cheek at the moment, and it looks like the culprit will soon be behind bars. Just thought I should let you know." "I see... Thanks..." Akina hung up without saying any more, put the phone on the curb a few feet from Etsu, and began to walk off to find Sorano before too much more happened. Then someone grabbed her shoulder and pulled her back. "Izumitaki," Etsu said as harsh as before, "explain yourself. You just saw your classmate whom you didn't really care for jump off a building, showing no previous signs of suicide, and you were within feet from him. If that's your story, you're gonna need evidence." "I... I don't have any... Please, leave me alone Etsu-sensei..." Etsu stood motionless for a moment, staring at Akina with a fierce look. "I need to be frank with you; I don't care what you want or how you want things to be. This is how things are, and until you learn to cope with that things won't be getting any better. You need a solid alibi or some witnesses, otherwise you're gonna be asking for a guilty sentence." Akina stood quietly, not saying a word a taking a single breath. As much as she didn't like it, complaining and being with Yukio wasn't going to help with anything, except her emotions. But with the way things were with her, weren't emotions more important than the truth? If she didn't learn to calm down and think, she could end up blowing up at court, at her friends, or even Yukio. She had nearly lost control of herself around him a few times, and she didn't want that to happen again... What should she do? Go with her emotions and go to jail for not having an alibi, but gain a mental foundation that was stronger than her current one? Or stay and talk with the police which might get her more credibility and thus ensure staying out of jail...? But what if she exploded and lost control of her temper? Surely, that wouldn't help with the situation... "Well?" Etsu said impatiently. Akina remained stationary, deciding within herself to run away for mental safety or stay for legal safety... Suddenly she realized she could feel the sides of her knees knocking into each other, slowly beginning to fail beneath her... What should she do? What would be best? If neither choice was best and they were both equal, which one should she choose? Tears began to roll down her face for the hundredth time recently... Not only was she unable to decide, she was losing control of her emotions as well; did that mean she needed to run instead of stay? Or would that only complicate things? Without her even thinking about it, her legs collapsed under her and she realized how much pain they were under; she would've been flat on the ground if someone from behind her didn't save her. "Akina, tell me what's going on," a familiar voice demanded. Turning her head to see who it was, her eyes fell upon Yukio. After seeing his face, she realized that she would much rather be with Yukio then ever deal with alibis and such. She would rather be with Yukio than anything on heaven or earth. * * * * * * * * Students were pouring out of school after the abrupt announcement that school would be cancelled for the day, some staying and wondering why and others simply leaving with a wide smile. Some had seen Kane falling off the roof and told their friends about it, so naturally there was a rumor going around that someone pushed him off the roof and killed him. The Kane they knew had no reason to kill himself; he was among the most cheerful people they knew, and had a lot for others to envy... So might it have been a killing of jealousy? Maybe it was Sorano who killed him... On the day an angel was brought to school, someone dies... Was this a sort of exchange from heaven? A coincidence? Suicide? Or murder? Was Kane killed before he was thrown off? Thoughts were being shared, questions were asked, reasoning was done... And Sorano, Kane, and Akina were the main focus of it all. "Please, leave me alone!" a thoroughly peeved Sorano said. A few classmates were huddled around Sorano, asking questions about where she came from and pulling feathers out of her wings to show to their family. So far she had felt seven or eight attempts at pulling one out, and three had succeeded. "Oh, c'mon! Just tell us how you got here already," "How does it feel when you flap your wings?" and "Your hair is so long, isn't it hard to take care of?" were her reply. "I... I am asking you to leave me alone, please do it!" Several more questions drowned out her request, and finally she had enough. She flapped out her wings as far and hard as she could, knocking over students and desks alike, then charged out the door and headed for freedom... Only to find a mob of excited students right on her heels. "Oh, please please pleeaase leave me alone!!" she screamed while bookin' it down the halls. Once again, she was answered with students yelling questions at her... when suddenly, she tripped on an inconsiderately discarded desk, and flew straight out the front door. Before she had time to recover, students were piling on top of her and pulling on her feathers, poking her back through the hole in her uniform, and messing around with her hair. She was about to scream at the top of her lungs when suddenly a dome of some sort of unknown blue energy burst out from around her and knocked every student feet away from her. Half of the students were amazed, half of them were scared, and all of them were now thinking twice before poking her. Sorano was all three; she was amazed at what she did, scared of not knowing how to control it, and she was certainly not going to be poking herself. * * * * * * * * Bwahaha.... Talk about one heck of a long wait.... After forgetting about it, procrastination, work, procrastination, forgetting about it a few more times, and procrastinating a few more times, I have finally finished chapter XI... I hope X_X I've also now revised the previous chapters (I was reading them and I thought "This is BORING..."), so if you want to catch up/read them all because you haven't read any/see the changes/do whatever the heck might fit here, feel free to :D |

I gotta hand it to you Sach, you really have got a heck of a story there.... I'm not that good at writing myself, though I must say, the way you make the story flow is very different (and by that I mean original). I think that helps give it more of an original twist to it. Nice job!
Beware the quiet people,
