Oh Good Great Scott, WHY!? I can see it now: Light gets Death Note, starts killing bad people, meets Misa, kill more people, but then stop because they have learned their lesson and turn themselves in. That is how it will go, because Hollywood BUTCHERS all animes. Just look at the live action Dragonball Z. It isn't even OUT yet, and already people are blasting it as one of the worst movies ever! I really wanna find the person who came up with the dumb idea and kick them squarely in the HEAD!

Is that the guy from High School Music? WTF is this bull5h17!? I may be a bit off when I say this, but you can't have "non-Japanese" play Japanese roles, strict Japanese roles. It physically doesn't match, but even take that away you're left with personalities in characters that will never cross paths in a correct manner. We need to riot and take down Hollywood!

I don't anticipate this movie to be very good but not because of this whole Zac Efron thing. Are we all willing to face the fact that if this film even gets released or through production, it'll possibly be 1.) most likely Americanized and 2.) far removed from the original plot. Because's let's face it, in order to turn a profit or at least break even, the film needs to try to reach out to all types of movie goers. Based off observation, if something like Death Note seems too niche, people who don't know it just aren't going to want to see it. Movies are after all a business. So be prepared for changed names and what not because they're doing that to the Akira live action as well if I recall from its screenplay review (which did actually get a B I think). But the main reason I don't think the movie will be very good is mostly because of condensed/altered plot. Death Note is a long story, with what, 50 something episodes and 12 volumes of manga? In order to make that fit in an average length movie of about 2 hours, they'd either have to really condense and cut things out or change the plot line altogether. Either way, you get watered down characters. Condensing doesn't give enough time for characters to develop in certain situations while altering just puts them in completely different situations where the writer has to make up how the character will react which is probably different than what the author of the original material intended them to be. As for actors, I still really, really, REALLY doubt they would cast Zac Efron. I mean seriously, if we as fans can't see him as Light, you'd certainly assume or hope that casting directors wouldn't either. =.= So please, for god's sake, put your minds to rest and see that this Zac Efron thing is probably just a rumor made up by some hyped up Disney enthusiast/fanatic. @DA: On a side note about what you said about non-Japanese playing Japanese roles, does this mean you'd disagree with the choice of Ziyi Zhang playing the main character in Memoirs of a Geisha? Cause she is after all, Chinese. |

@Jow- I think DA means North American actors playing what was designed to be an Asian role, not specifically Japanese. We won't know the cast list until at least a frame for the movie is up, so let's all wait until then to bash whomever they choose (I can't think of many actors who could pull this off, and I can assure you that none of the ones I'm thinking of will be in Hollywood's mind). Jow explained what I did a page or two back, (or the Cowboy Bebop movie thread, all the same Hollygarbage) and the whole problem is that big name movie studios take these foreign creations that only appear to a small audience or aren't heard of much and try and make a buck off of them by tearing it apart and spreading it out to appeal to a wider group. I just don't understand how Anime creators just hand over their ideas to these. . . oh wait, that's right, I almost forgot that money grubbing companies usually drag the rights out for the movie studios. The only thing we (not including myself in this case since I hated Death Note) as fans can do is ignore these movies and any mention of them, preferring instead to believe that they do not exist (I've had experience with Devil May Cry 2, the game just about every DMC fan likes to believe never happened). You can also scoff at anyone who speaks of the movie, that helps too. Until I have gained the ability to summon the elemental forces at will to strike down Uwe Boll and other game/anime to movie creators, then we all just have to live with this torture. I'm doing my best people, but materia doesn't come cheap.    |

[@Jow] Yeah, what Jon said was what I meant, though you're partially right with the idea. On a sidenote, I liked Memoirs of a Geisha, regardless of missing a few parts, but I love Zhang Ziyi, she's beast (and also top 100 female bodies in Hollywood or something :P). Since I probably didn't make any sense there, think of the movie, the Forbidden Kingdom with that one NY kid being "the chosen" one, which makes no sense whatsoever. I mean, if you look at the, he doesn't blend in, as well as the movie's attributes and characteristics. A person like him should be in his entirely separate thing, king of like The Transporter. Anyways, I think you get what I'm trying to say though, and not to be offensive or anything against anyone, but it's just my opinion. Think of it like anime, with seiyus and other voice actors from other countries. I think that's a good, simple example :D [@tilly] Let's do it. We'll burn them down with Molotovs.

I think Hollywood's always been kind of lame. The movies they release over the years are either rips of other movies or just lame! Not surprised that stealing other country's ideas and calling it their own, but seriously movies aren't diverse anymore as they are produced elsewhere than Hollywood.

Lol poor Deathnote. I've never seen it before, but I know it'll never survive this massive failure. R.I.P. Deathnote. You may rest in peace with Dragonball and Hitman. Resident Evil doesn't count.
