is there any way to incorporate japanese text into photoshop and other image editing software? particularly, is there a plug-in or some such that would make it a whole lot easier than to just go to font sites and download seperate japanese fonts and to go through all the trouble of typing and changing from kanji, hiragana, and to katakana fonts just to get a certain word or sentence out of it? if not, does anyone have any techniques around this?

This one's real easy:

You're gonna have to enable IME for your computer as well as have 'East Asian' languages installed.

*Note: For WinXP only (2000 too?)

To do that:

  1. Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options
  2. Click the Language tab
  3. If they aren't checked already, mark the check box for both options below
  4. Keep saying 'Yes' or 'OK' to any prompts that pop up
  5. After the languages install, click the Details button in the same tab (the Language tab)
  6. Now you want to install a Japanese Language keyboard
    1. Click 'Add...'
    2. Browse for 'Japanese'
    3. Make sure 'Keyboard layout/IME' is checked and make sure Japanese is selected as well

  7. Click OK, OK, OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK

That takes care of the Japanese language part. Now for typing:
  • You should notice a little icon next to your taskbar with the letters 'EN' on the button
  1. Click the button and make sure Japanese is an option in the little menu that pops up
  2. Open Notepad
  3. Click the EN button (the language button) and select JP (Japanese)
  4. In Notepad, right-click and there should be an option to 'Open IME'; do that
  5. You can now type in Japanese in Notepad

*Note: You can do this in other programs as well.

I haven't really found a way to type directly in Photoshop yet, but copy/paste is the best solution thus far, right? :)

i already have japanese text support installed, and i tried to copy and paste, but it didn't work. i found a way around it, typing the text in notepad or wordpad, then taking a screenshot and editing the image to show only the japanese text and then placing it into the image that way, but i'd still like to know if there's an easier way to it.

Maybe the thing you mentioned "font sites and download seperate japanese fonts and to go through all the trouble of typing and changing from kanji, hiragana, and to katakana fonts just to get a certain word or sentence out of it?" is the only way... But then again, mayber there is really a way out of it.

Maybe you can buy a japanese computer? A foolish suggestion from me, really.

You have to make sure the font you're using is one of the MS (Mincho, Gothic, PMincho, Pgothic) font types too. Forgot to mention that. :0

yay! when i changed the font to one of the ms ones the copy and paste actually worked! ^_^ thanks a bunch, riceboks-san! that definitely is a whole lot easier than my screenshot technique and cheaper than buying a japanese computer. :P

You're very welcome. Besides those fonts, there are other Japanese fonts out there. I have one called TOMOUSE; it's in a handwritten 'kiddy' style. :o One example can be found here in both English and Japanese text.

that's a cute font (and pic!) ^^ it's kinda hard to find cute japanese fonts. the ones i've found aren't very appealing.

Actually, you can type Japanese directly into Photoshop by the same way (as riceboks said: it can work in other programs too). At least I can.. just do the same way as you would type in Notepad (use the text tool in Photoshop, then change the language to JP (or change it first..doesn't matter)).
