It depends on quite a few things; I'm no expert on images, but so far I say .png is the best for flat images alltogether. I have an image with detail down to the perfect pixel which is something like 77.9 kilobytes. I can make a .jpg of it and it gets slightly fuzzy and the file size is then something like 77.6 kilobytes, and to make a .bmp that's pixel perfect would be too large in size to deal with internet wise, so I say go .png XD

However, .gifs can be used for animated files (like the blinking avatars of some members), so it depends on what you're going for. Now, if only .png was more popular...

.png lets the picture keeps all the orignal color, but it costs more space then a .gif file.

When you save a picture to .gif, then some colors might change during the process (into 256 colors only)

Thanks for the information about .png but I would like to know more, if what is more wiser to use as a page background .png, .jpg, or .gif file?

Whatever you like; just keep in mind these two things:
Quality, and
File size

The best compromise of both ids what you'll use, other than that it's up to you XD

If you are using a small image to tile across a page's background, use png or gif. If it has lots of colors png. If it's just a big background, like a desktop background, use jpg.

Either one would be fine; I'd say .gif, to use an animation, but the size will end up small either way, so it's up to you ^_^

Actually, both PNG (pronounced as ping, Portable Network Graphics) and GIF (Graphics Intechange Format) are both good, especially when applied to right images.

But for me, PNG is better because it has two types: PNG-8 and PNG-24. For PNG-8, it will be like GIF but for PNG-24, it will be like (or better) JPEG (Joint Pictures Exchange Group).

As for both, they support transparency of images but PNG doesn't support Animations, unlike GIF.

GIF has only 256 colours but for PNG, it has millions.
