Wow....talk about biased... I've only seen 3 people who said that it depends so far, which really surprises me. Personally I really don't care for one over the other, unless one or the other is bad. I dare you guys to try watching the Cowboy Bebop series subbed...one of the few times the dub was CLEARLY better than the original seiyuus. Most people here have only used crappy shows like Naruto as examples, which is really unfair, since Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach are all (or were in OP's case) being dubbed by the same company (Viz) who when looking at their online reports seem to care more about what their stock value looks like than whether they're actually making the people who buy their stuff happy, and thus the kind of company that is an enemy to our favorite industry. Also, many of you don't realize when watching dubs that the intention in choosing a voice actor to fill the role isn't always to sound cool - it's to sound like the type of character they're playing. Plus, you're pitting basically the Sean Connery's and Hallie Barry's of Japan against a considerably less funded studio's budget. Considering that I'd say I'm quite impressed that they're able to compete period- let alone do really well in many cases. Try watching just about anything by ADV Films, Funimation (they even made a crappy show like Burst Angel sound good!), or any well known show by Bandai (outlaw star/gundam/cowboy bebop, etc.) before you go and badmouth all dubs. Geneon has done an AMAZING job lately too. And if by now after reading all this you're still against dubs, watch 'When They Cry' (aka Higurashi no Naku Koro ni) subbed first and then dubbed and then try to tell me dubs suck!

listen im not bad mouthing dubs its just that most dubs dont have all the good lins because they dub for the younger watchers so you miss alot of the stuff, sorry i just like the japanese stuff better for that reason |

Could you tell me a few examples? (I don't mean to sound confrontational seriously, I'm just curious) If you mean shows like Yu-gi-oh I understand what you mean, but I think you'll find most shows really aren't edited at all, just the big ones on TV that aren't on adult swim or ani-mondays (sci-fi channel).

things like naruto are edited for the younger watchers, there are a few things in that they have changed, tenjho tenge was edited as well if i remember rightly mainly things like that which have gotten really big thats why i like to watch the Japanese ones |

Hah! Japanese over American definitely! But I have seen people saying that the Sailor Moon American dub was better than the original :/ I especially hate it when the dubbers put the anime on DVD and then they never put the original dub on there. It ticks me off XD That usually happens with American dubs that appeared on American TV (like Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokemon, etc.). And a lot of things are edited too. Such as in Mew Mew Power (couldn't think of another example), they made the "cross" Zakuro was on in episode 10 a stick for religious terms. And finally... For those who dub the anime and don't change some/all the names, I hate how they can pronounce things (e.g. in Full Moon's dub, Mitsuki's manager's name is pronounced "Oh-she-gae" instead of "Oh-she-gii:). |

Once again, you guys are listing nothing but kid shows and stuff by viz. Tell me a single show that isn't by viz and that wasn't intended for an audience 12 and under originally that has a bad dub and then I'll understand. Whether you want to believe it or not, Yu-gi-oh was intended for kids over in japan as well as it was over here. The only difference is ratings are a bit more lax over there as for what can be in kid shows. Could someone PLEASE talk about a show that wasn't on Toonami or Miguzi already!!!

well i dont watch the shows for kids, i watch things like Gantz, i watched the dubed of that i thought it was good but it was still edited coz i watched the Japanese one as well |

@h4x0r dud3: How about Jigoku Shoujo? I don't know if the American version has been released already, but I watched the South East Asia Animax dub already. It's intended for mature viewers, yet I still see an attempt to make the show "safe" by editing dialogues. And the dub itself, I've heard worse, but not a "great dub".   |

@Soph: In regards to Gantz, if you mean censoring the 'excessive cursing' the fansubs have, let me tell you this bit first: This is a huge misconception, but Japanese has NO CURSEWORDS. PERIOD. The closest thing to cursing by just a word would be baka or ksa. Instead, the equivalent of cursing in Japanese is speaking in a lower politeness level form, or a rude tone. Since in japanese saying something like "hello ramen man, I didn't like that flavor very much, can I try something else?" in a lowered politeness level doesn't carry the same intense offense as saying it rudely in english, so to compensate for the culture difference, translators tend would script it as along the lines of, "Hey ya old ramen turd, that tasted like piss that came out your ass!!! Gimme something better or I'll kick your ass!!!". Thus, the next time you watch something dubbed and say 'hey they cut out all the cursing in it!', the truth is it was never there. Fansubbers also have a tendency to want to make lines sound cooler so sometimes they'll exaggerate them a bit so that's sometimes part of it too, but usually if you see there's less cursing than you saw in the fansub it was probably because the translator was giving a more literal translation rather than a culture-equivalented one. If you want a good example of a no-held punches older-ages-only anime with all the original juicy lines left in, try Elfen Lied. @Asd: sorry, I haven't seen Jigoku Shoujo so I can't really comment on that one, and according to ANN it hasn't come out here in the states yet either so I can't really rate that one.

I prefer watching anime with Japanese audio. Why? Because I always like to read the subtitles and normally the American voice-overs are saying something completely different from what the translations really are. I find the subtitles make a lot more sense and I enjoy listening to other languages.  |

@h4x0r dud3 i've seen Elfen Lied in english and Japanese, its one of my faves, its not the cursing im on about,its more the funny lines which are sometimes a lil to rude for the younger watchers you know what i mean, the cursing i can live with out its just the funny jokes they get rid of that annoys me |

i get really mad when i see the american version of my favourite animes and realize how much it sucks. japanese version rules!! i swear im never watching the american version of ANY anime, unless theres absolutely no other way to watch the anime. for the american version, god! they gotta get some better voice actors!!!!! and also i HATE HATE HATE the way they cut out "bloody" parts and "love" parts in the american version!! WHY CANT THEY JUST KEEP IT ORIGINAL?!?!?!?! those who agree with me, reply to this topic XD |

@Kazumi: Are you talking about either shows for kids or things put on TV? There are good dub actors if you know where to look. And what about H shows translated into English? I've never actually watched a H show, but do they cut the *beep*scenes in the English version? Don't think so, 'cause it's a show for adults even in Japan. |
