Any Japanese language students?

I'm going to start the 2nd Semester of Japanese this spring, and was wondering if there are any other students out there. If so what are your opinions of the class/fellow students/etc...

Probably 80% of my class were otaku. 20% of those hardcore (the annoying kind) otakus. The class itself seemed pretty easy to me, although a majority of the class seemed to struggle with it. I don't think many realized what they were getting into. We only learned formal grammar, and the kana the first semester; so doesn't help much with anime (which is usually less formal). I do find myself occasionally recognizing more words and grammar in anime and music though. The class itself was 2 1/2 hours; which was really annoying, even for a class like japanese which I like. It is really easy to get bored and stop paying attention in long classes like those. We had quizes almost every Wednesday, and tests just about every other week. So the pace was one which you really couldn't afford to get behind. We also had quite a bit of homework. Aside from 1-2 hours of assigned homework a day (well every other day MWF class), I usually found myself constantly studying for the vocabulary or kana quizes. Sometimes we would even be assigned ~40 words to memorize by the next class; but usually I was lucky and had the weekend to study. All that aside though I really did enjoy the class, and I'm really looking foward to next semester.

O_o

I'm just self-studying Japanese at the moment. Still starting on the basic greetings and stuff. I haven't even memorized both Katakana and Hiragana, let alone Kanji

Welcome to the relm of all serious foreign languge study. To be able to speak a foreign language at ANY degree takes herculanian amounts of effort and an ability to devote a lot of time studying and rote memorization. People don't realize that a foreign language is a LOT of information. You need multipe thousands of words at your fingertips to speak, and you need to be able to put them together gramatically in an instant.

Advanced language classes get harder. I think I'm expected to learn 100 words twice a week with kanji, and that's only in one of my two Japanese classes. But a bit on encouragement, it gets easier to memorize things the more you practice, and nobody really expects you to remember most of them a week later. 100 words is about equivilant to about 20 to a person just starting studying. And nothing can beat out the good feeling you get when you understand what somebody else says in a foreign language.

I'm studying Japanese, like some other people here. I didn't realize how hard it was to communicate until I actually went to Japan.

I'm learning Japanese since 16. I've started learning it after I finished my GCSE exams at High School in London. I went to a Japanese school in Fukuoka first, then I went back to London to continue learning it. Right now, it's quite easy.
