WAAHH! Got a virus!

I'll put down the name as soon as I found out what it is, but all of a sudden on the PC at home, I get this message from Norton saying a virus was detected. Problem is, I did a search with Norton but didn't find anything and I didn't have enough time to stick around to find out anymore. Does anyone know any ways of getting it out? Or does Norton get rid of it already? |
Re: WAAHH! Got a virus!

That's odd, normally Norton would tell you what virus it is. It would also tell you if it can be repaired or not. As for me, it's always Trojan and Norton's always unable to repair it; though it's plainly easy deleting it. If that virus is Trojan, I think I can help. Find it out away! Hurry up or it'll eat your system... j/k. Ah well... can't stay up late. In case it's Trojan... Since I'm using Windows XP, what I basically do are the ff.: (1) Turning off System Restore; (2) Restarting comp to safe mode; (3) Scanning whole system after; (4) DELETING of any Trojans detected; (5) Turning off comp, after 5 mins, turning it on and finally, enabling System Restore to maximum. Read the instructions: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.horse.html |

I've heard from Lady Rin and Nightmare that Norton stinks. I have McAfee, which is $12 a year, but I'm not sure if it's better. I know that it kill trojans! |

Both MacAfee and Norton should be able to remove it. If not, just delete it if it's not an important system file. |
Re: WAAHH! Got a virus!

U can also use norton antivirus to quarentine the file then delete it safely. If all else fails u might want to consider reformating your computer. |

That's bullshit. If you expect anything from Norton, Trend Micro or McAfee to find a virus forget it. the much daunted Norton AV let the sasser and a bunch of others into my network a year ago an already known virus. Norton and the other 2 suck don't use them. Take it from me, I know more about computers than all of you put together and that includes Gendou. Now that I hve your attention what do I use. first go to Pandasoftware, CA.com or AVG (I think, that;'s the name of the AV prog) and using MSIE get an online virus and spyware scan. OK big shot, what do you use? I'm glad you asked, Panda Platinum AV and IS suite. since I installed it on the network last Feb nothing and I mean nothing not even a nasty cookie has gotten into my system./ When I check for any malware it shows zero, zip, nada/. Norton can't do that and it's supposed to be the best. Panda updates every time you boot. so if theres been a def release in the morn and in the afternoon you get both. How to get it. Simple. Get the trial package and install it. Let it run until it expires. then uninstall it. Remove all references to Panda Software in the registery nad on your hdisk then re-install and your good to go. Also, stop using MSIE, outlook and O-express and Media Player 9 or newer. Replace them with the CCCP codec and player pack, media player classic, VLC and BSplayer for mult media and use eudora, mozilla/firefox and opera for browser and email. DO NOT use anything from Mscum that has an supports ActiveX. ActiveX is the biggest security hole in your system at the moment. Now, get rid of the norton crap and go get some good av software. If you need help killing it let me know what it is and I'll get you instructions. uncorrected |

Hey Ranger, I like your ideas. Yeah, McAfee ain't the best, but it works for me. Also, I've seen you and Rin put "uncorrected" at the end of some posts. What's it mean?? |

I can live without another virus in our network. Ranger goes absolutely berserk when that happens. Sakura what do you use for anti-virus? 'Uncorrected' means the post has not been gone through for grammar and spelling errors. It's a habit I started on a couple of forums we use that are sticklers for grammar and spelling. It originally read, "Uncorrected because I'm too {tired, lazy, out of time, etc} goodnight" to show I was being lazy instead of being having bad english. |

Man, ranger, you read my mind. That's what I tell everyone when someone asks this question. And actually, I don't need to use Panda. Ever since I got this new computer, I 1) Got Firefox 2) Got Ad-Aware SE, Spy-Bot Search & Destroy, Crap Cleaner, and AVG FREE 3) Stopped using those prgrams a loooong time ago 4) Updated everything 5) Safe mode no networking, cleaned it out 6) Defragged 7) System Checkpoint and I'm done Now that I got that out of the way, I always update, and clean it out. Never get anything, like I used to when I was little. (I'm 16) |

Yes it is. Opera is Ad-ware however it is safe since the adware is hard coded into opera and can be turned off. POpera is 100% safe and does not place any malware on yuor system. Firefox/Mozilla are the same company and it is also free. We prefer Opera over Firefox. I find Firefox clumsy and slow while Opera lives up to it's name as the fastest browser there is. |
Re: WAAHH! Got a virus!

If you think that anti virus programs will save your computer from those addware, spyware, trojan and others, you are very wrong. (sorry if you are offended.) For your information, updates for your anti virus will only protect your computer for a short 1 day. It's because hackers and such make viruses everyday. So if any chance that the new virus goes in, not even Norton nor any other anti virus can save your computer. It's true. I promise..^_^ |

... Why do people even make viruses and such in the first place? |

Nats I suggest you re-read what Ranger said. There hasn't been anything, not even a cookie, let in since he installed it and Panda updates everyday. |

I use clamwin....it's a free download, and the good thing is that it doesn't conflict with any other virus scanners that might have been installed. Pretty good actually...got rid of the 8 viruses sittin pretty on my computer. |
Re: WAAHH! Got a virus!

Question Ranger, how do I get rid of traces so I can re-install the trial pack? I'm trying the trial tonight but I want to know about what to do later. Thank you everyone for their suggestions. |

Open your registry editor and remove all references to Panda. then clear outthe directories. That's pretty much it takes abotu half an hour. Careful with your registry and back it up or set a resotre point first. The registry is something you need to be careful with. |

There is no sure-fire way to protect your computer with a program. Every program has holes, the only difference is some have a lot less than others, and although I completely agree with you guys about how Opera is MUCH better than any other browser, no browsers built-in protective system can protect your computer as effectively as manually monitoring your incoming data streams. If you're lazy, then things like Opera can protect you more than enough for the average person, if you're paranoid like me however, manual monitoring is best and by far (if you know what you're doing) the most effective. And someone asked earlier about why people make such evil programs like viruses? There are two main reasons: 1) For the sheer fun of it and to cause trouble for others/revenge purposes (just evil intentions in general) and 2), although highly-unlikely but it has happened, experimental programs gone madly wrong....the second has happened to one of my friends although I was able to help it stop from getting beyond his ISP.
Beware the quiet people,
You don't know their intentions
(small signatures are sooo much cooler since they don't annoy people trying to read through posts!) |

Gee, I suck at compy stuff. I guess I'm the only one who uses the ever-friendly "internet explorer". Hahaha... =D -Cheers for Mr. Norton.- The only thing I have,... is crappy. |

Bottom line. If you use MSIE you are asking for trouble. |
