Do you believe in your religion?
|
If Mr. Gendou allows this topic, i really appreciate it. I just want to see people's comments and reactions on this topic. If you, Mr. Gendou find this senseless, please delete this thread if you wish... thank you. ^_^ I'll start. In our religion, we Christians believe in Heaven and Hell. If you are good and have done good things to the world, for example, donating money to the poor, helping people who are suffering, and other things that have something to do with doing good, you go to Heaven. (YAY!) BUT, if you do bad things, killing, stealing, adultery, etc. You go to Hell. (AHW!) If you look closely at the Ten Commandments by God, brought to you by Moses at the Mt. Sinai, 1st commandment is "thou shall not have other gods before me." <-- it's kinda absurd don't you think? people have been worshiping OTHER gods for a very looooooooooong time and look.. none has happened. It's an example of a "belief", in other words, a myth. Second, "thou shall not use God's name in vain." Another lie. An example is South Park. God's name has been used over and over in this series and yet, the makers don't die. Why do you think? I'll stop at the 2nd commandment. If readers have comments, please feel free to reply. And please don't think that I'm trying to fight you if I try to answer your post. The posts that I will reply you with are in form of arguements.. please don't get offended. ^_^ I'll try to be as gentle in answering as possible.. |

You picked a hot topic. If Gendou allows it I would like all of oyu to avoid flames and fighting. That's what usually happens in this topic. I would also ask that you avoid dogma it tends to turns things into a mess. Yes Nats, I know about the christains I was one myself. My husband ios Jewish and I follow his faith. We also believe in the teachings of Zen and Tao among other things. You said, It's an example of a "belief", in other words, a myth. That is incorrect. A belief is not a myth, nor is it based in myth. What you are talking about is religion and that in itself often has nothing to do with faith, love or god. the 10 commandments were given to the hebrews at Mt Sinai. They were not given to the christains. That happened 3,000 years before christ. Without somethng to believe in your spirit dies. Look to see where you have faith or belief within yourelf. You don't need religion to have faith or belief. don't forget religion quite often has nothing to do with faith, love or god. If it did most of the cahtolics priests would have been punished for their acts towards children whom they were supposed to teach and protect instead of molesting them. All too often religion is used to hid such acts or is used as a socio-political statement, the mid-east, or as a method to raise millions of dollars give by the people who can afford it least. When I look at religion today I see what can best be described as a commercialism of faith. The Jim and Tammy, Paul and Jan, Pat Robertson and others piously begging for money while wearing a $30,000US Rolex watch on TV. I had to rexamine my own faith and beliefs once to see what I believed in and what I found put me at peace with myself for the most part. I believe in things you won't accept because you're waitng for a being to punish the evil doers. It is much deeper than that. They shall receive their punishment, and not in hell either, in this life. Most of them will be the source for their own punishment as well. I believe in god. I also believe in Gaia the earth mother, faeries, dragons, magic and much more. I feel that if you believe in one oyu have to believe in them all for they are there for a reason. I also believe in myself. My weaknesses and strengths. I seem to remember reading somewhere "We are each god within ourselves". I don't know how much truth there is in that, however I'm sure that it is more truth than what I hear fom Reverand Rolex. somewhat corrected ![]() |

If you count nothing as a religion, then yes. yes I do. If you are interested in this thread check out the religion vs anti religion thread. |

I dont believe in any religion or God, so Im an atheist. But I dont condemn those who believe in God, as long as they dont hurt others because of it. |
Re: Do you believe in your religion?

Religion is just a way of keeping everyone in order. If you tell them they will burn for an eternity for being bad, they will be good for their whole life. God, on the other hand, is a possibility. The evolution theory is very good, but still has a few holes in it. Life just seems a little too organized to me.

Nats, why do you refer to yourself as a Christian if you obviously don't follow it? By the way, the Bible clearly teaches that good works alone DO NOT get you into heaven. |

Being an atheist really rules, because you can gather the knowledge provided from every religion and none of them would kill you over it. The thing is, if you wish to recieve spiritual enlightenment from a religion, you're usually wasting your time. I see religion as a teaching, a course you take at your own pace, accepting bits of information slowly. It's useful to compare the different teachings in each religion, you find interesting things. Such as in almost every religion there was a "Great Flood" or "Great Disaster" which happened a long time ago. [Personal Opinion] I don't think we should dwell too much on whether or not a higher entity actually exists, it's possible that the bible was a science fiction story written 2000 years ago and someone decided to make a religion from it, star trek is a fine modern day example. I think the teachings of being a good person, helping the needy etc. should be human nature, it shouldn't have to be taught to us, but sadly, it does. ![]() I'll eat you. |

i agree with gecko. in what i've learned from my social sciences, religion provides people with faith, something to believe in. being fanatic to a certain religion takes belief to a whole new level. as for me, i'm a christian. but i don't go to church. it's actually 5 years since i've never went to church. the last mass i attended was the mass where i was a "sacristan." very ironic, no? although, i don't see anything wrong whatever your religion is. like Gandhi put it in the motion picture "Gandhi", "I am a Christian, I am a Muslim, I am a Hindu, and a Jew! And so are all of you!" *blip* ![]() |

Have nothing against religion or the people who believe in them...but watching the news and reading newspapers....to me religion is the root of all evil....so many religions mean more and more conflicts.Kinda sad don't you think? If i offended anyone i apologize in advance.... ![]() |
Re: Do you believe in your religion?

I agree with you izumo.. it's kinda absurd how people say how "holy" their religion is but they still do bad things. For example, why did muslims(no offense), participate in Jihad or Holy War? Because they believed that they will go to their Heaven. (I don't know how to call it. Sorry) Even if they have to hurt many people. But in Christianity, they say that "thou shall not kill". And yet, we Filipinos see in tabloids everywhere that there has been a murder somewhere in Manila, raped in Quezon City, etc. I know these people are Christians. And I know that this is not happening only in our country... According to the lessons I learned in social sciences, Christians are afraid to kill before because they believed that they will go to hell if they do. And they don't want that to happen. So they just let other people push them around or even kill them and say "forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.." I'd like to answer ruler_of_ewoks' question. I was baptized as a christian by my parents. From prepatory, 1st year high school i believed in God. It all got screwed up in 2nd year high school. I'm third year right now. And yes. I see that your point is correct. Not all good things will put you to heaven. And I stand corrected. ^_^ And Lady_Rin, you are correct about people who ask for donations YET, they wear gold bracelets, watches, necklaces, expensive clothing, etc. It makes me want to tell them if I can that "Donate your gold watch and I'll donate my t-shirts." <-- ha ha! ^_^ GeicoGecko, being an atheist really rules. I agree with you. BUT i just would like to point out that I'm not really questioning my religion nor am I fighting it. I'm still a christian at heart. And I have no intention of changing it. ^_^ But I'd still like to see your opinions. |
Re: Do you believe in your religion?

Just for the record for myself at least, I don't count my "religion" as a religion per se. I see it more as a relationship with a higher power. It's quite saddening to read all the newspaper reports which question where God is or what God is doing amidst all the recent disasters, especially during the past year. It's almost like people are taking the opportunity to have a stab at, let's not even say God, but religion itself. nats-> The thing about war and the act of fighting in itself is questionable yes, but don't forget that some of them have been ordered by God. How many wars have we seened in the Bible when the Israelites turned their back on him? The whole country was sacked and lives taken mercilessly. This isn't to justify war, but some do happen because of instructions from a higher power, whatever that higher power may be. Christianity itself just has to take a whack everywhere I go it seems =/ Everyone has an apparant peeve for our acts of evangalism. Which is understandable actually, seeing how some people can be really tactless and insensitive in shoving Christian ideals down people's throats. Being a Christian myself and going through that stage before, i understand to some degree how it may feel like. Sorry for the disorganised post xD Just woke up and I've got loud music blasting at me which kills my concentration.

nats, there is a BIG difference between knowing about God and having a relationship with Him. This is what Christianity is all about... a relationship with the creator of the universe. You cannot lump Christianity together with other religions. It's like trying to mix oil and water. The Bible says that the only way to heaven is through Jesus Christ, and that statement alone shoves every other religion away from itself. In short, you can't be a "Christian and". |
Re: Do you believe in your religion?

well ive never told ne one but since i dont kno u ppl... i believe in god but i dont believe he interferes with daily life like punishing the wicked or rewarding the righteous because that would alter the ultimate judgement because people would do good only when rewarded and do bad when punished so the punished would continue to do bad and the good continue to do good. so something like the makers of south park arent gonna die because i believe every1 lives the way they want and are then judged but of course i believe jesus existed and i believe he came because the world was gettin really f*cked up so jesus was sent as a repairman, but u kno what they say "a thing can be repaired as many times as it is broken" or it could just be reincarnation...

If God doesn't interfere with human life, then why do you believe Jesus was sent to repair it? |

The main problem I see and the source of a lot of the worlds evil are the religious fundamentalists. It doesn't matter, christain, muslim, jew, everyone else. Fundamentalists have a way of peverting anything originally written for good an interpreting it in a way suitable for themselves and not for the good of others. All kill in the name of god even though one of the 10 commandment is "Thou shalt not murder" Some say kill. Pro-life fundamentalists think nothing of killing doctors and nurses who work in a clinic in the name of god to save a life. Muslim fundamentalists kill in the name of jihad any one who is an infidel, those who don't believe and live the way they do. It doesn't matter if it's the innocents either, women and children or the elderly and sick. Christain fundamentalists are taking over american politics in a country where separation of church and state is paramount. They want to turn America into a country of christain values. The are led by King George of America who delibritely singled out contries that didn't agree with him as the axis af evil and said on world TV that this was a crusade. Just what the muslims want to hear. America is a cultural melting pot, it is not a christain country and I don't want to live in a christain america. Still all of this is really the work of a small percentage of the worlds religious. Religion is too easily perverted to what people want like the fundamentalist minister who turn up at the burial of troops returned from Iraq to say this was gods puinishment because America accepted gays. It is a lot harder to pervert faith in god, your beliefs and yourself since if you do you are only doing yourself harm. ![]() |

Isnt the name of this thread a bit wrong? If you dont believe in a religion, then you dont have a religion. |
Re: Do you believe in your religion?

Hmmm I'm a free thinker I believe in the existence of God, but I don't think all the things on the holy books are true, and we shouldn't follow blindly what it says |

It's not religion that counts anyway, it's your relationship with God... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
