on the infinte mass thing lets say we get a rock the size of a fist if somehow we can make that to get it at very high masses so that it goes near light speed (maybe a 100th of light speed or something) will we be able to kno the amount of mass added needed to find out how to surpass the speed of light?

Well, if YOU increased the mass of the rock to so that it matches with the speed of light, then you already should know how much it has increased by. While were talking about stars, if you combine millions of average stars together, do you think it will have the external energy to match with the Sun? |

i think the problem is that your assuming einstiens theories were correct, did it ever cross you that he might've been wrong? we cant verify nor prove them wrong. but i think you can surpass the speed of light, scientist are observing molecules and particles, they believe travel faster than the speed of light, only for short instances though. heres a theoretical, yet dumb scenario: imagina you have 2 trains, one train is traveling at the speed of light, the other traveling at the speed of light, but only a fraction of a second behind the first. now what if the first one slowed its speed for a split second then returned to normal speed at the exact same instant that it was hit with the second train? would the first have enough force to break the speed of light, if only for a short time? ponder, oh and im in college so dont think im just randomly saying things, thanx ^^ |

Apparently the speed of light is 300,000 kilometers per second. According to current theroy If you pass the speed of light you will occupy every place in the universe at once. Yet you would pass through everything because of the speed you are moving at.
He's dead. He's in the ground now, sure it's bad for him but on the other hand it's party time for all the little wormies.

speed of sound is 300m/s+ in air, 1400m/s+ in water and 5000m/s+ in solids, while speed of light is 3.0 x 108m/s no matter where it is. |

Ok so this isn't really on topic, but as you all seem to be discussing the speed of light. There is a situation that you can faster than light travel can be observed. To do this I have to first disagree with Shigeki by saying that the speed of light can differ. Lets say: C = Velocity of light in a vacuum = 299792458 m/s V = Velocity of light = C/n n = refactive index of material. and for example n of water = 1.3 If a charged particle travels faster than speed of light in that medium then this particle excites the medium making it give of a faint radiation. In water this would tend to be at the blue wavelength. This is known as Cherenkov radiation. This phenomena is used in the detection of neutrinos. All this said to my knowledge there is no known process to travel faster than the velocity of light in a vacuum. Ahh I feel better - Just had to be said... Sorry... |
