What happened to gendou? there arent as many users on chat as they used to be, and not that much activity on the forum either.

This is a good question, and website popularity is complex, so there's no one answer. Since I started the site, in the mid-Napster days, other services like YouTube and BitTorrent have gotten popular. It could also be that anime music, in general is not as popular as it used to be, with the rise of K-pop, for example. As for the chat, it's reliance on Java is a poor choice on my part, because some people don't have that plugin installed.

@satrap - I think part of it might have a little to do with the social media aspect as well.

I mean you can get Facebook and Twitter or whatever on pretty much anything these days. I would assume that at least some people would look at stuff like the chat room and the forum and ask "Why not just use Twitter/Facebook/Texting?". To be honest if I was big into Facebook I don't think I would be on Gendou as much as I am now.

On the other hand, the site statistics show that there are still around 8000 accounts active based on just today, although I'm not sure how accurate that number is. What those 8000 accounts are doing every day though, I have no idea.

@Gendou - You bring up a good point about Anime music possibly losing popularity. I know that I watched a lot of anime back when I first joined the site, but I barely watch any nowadays, so I don't really hear much in the way of music which leads to me not really searching for songs.

I'm not really sure why I don't follow Anime much anymore. I still love the art style, but I just don't have much interest in the stuff that comes out. Maybe part of it is due to the 'Moe' phase that seems to be on the go? I know I'm not in to that, but I don't know if this is a recent trend or one that has been around since the early 2000's. I just keep hearing people talk about how everything is really 'Moe'-heavy.

At this point, I'm largely here for the community rather than the Anime music, even if things aren't quite as lively as they used to be.

I think of the Gendou community as having a lot in common with towns along highways. People pass by the town on the road, and have to stop to get gas. People are log in to download music, and can click on the forums or chat while they're here. But take away the highway, or the music downloading, and it turns into a ghost town. I haven't done any quantitative analysis, but it certainly seems the gradual quieting of the community has followed in step with fewer downloads.

By the way, I'm alright with this. It's sort of a lonely thought, but I've expected the site to decline in popularity over time. I've made my peace with it.

@Gendou - I can relate to that (since I live in a town similar to what you speak of, where the highway now runs around the town instead of through it).

And yeah, it's something I hate to think about personally since I love this site and I'd essentially be Internet-homeless if Gendou.com went offline (I'm one of those social outcasts that doesn't have a Facebook/Twitter account), but it's something that has to be accepted sooner or later. Unless Anime music suddenly spikes again it's unlikely that it will go back to being super lively around here.

I have an idea. why not integrate chat into irc? there are people who still idle on irc so that might be interesting to see. And if you put it on a popular network, other people from the network might come to know and idle

I think its the website's look.

It hasn't change its look since I signed up an account.

TBH I've never really been part of the community, I just go to chat room, listen to people and logoff. I like this website very much, this was the website where I first downloaded an anime-genre song.

But I'll be honest, I never liked the way the forums look, the look of the front page and music page is nice at first but gets boring after a year or so.

I know a good community can't be destroyed, but atleast upgrade it once in a while.

Time to make-up your website Gendou-san.

@johnkx - Personally, I like the website's look the way it is. It's simple, straightforward and free of clutter which allow it load quickly.

I would rather have the ability to quickly zip around the forums and other parts of the site in a few seconds than having a dressed up website where each page takes a few seconds to load up everything on it.

Granted, I think Gendou did it up this way to make things easier for 56k users back in the day, so I wouldn't mind knowing what he thinks of the design at this point now that internet speeds are generally overall faster.

I still like the way of this website design. I mean, when my connection is so bad that nothing else will be loaded in good time, this one can be loaded fast enough. And it's simple, not like many other website where it's loaded with unnecessary things. additionally the design is still unique from other website that when you bored with their website design you can go here and see something different.

Why not add some links on where you can get info on the bands who sings the anime songs?

I would have to agree on that suggestion to use IRC instead of Java. Yes, we would use emoticons, we would lose "The Chat", that mysterious voice from the outer realm, but I guess it could bring more people in. Servers that come to mind are Rizon and Freenode.

Search for your path and you'll find it!

In regards to the xxxx account >__< I think many just came on to download and rarely or don't even use the chat/forum.
But it does appear that the less 'new' download available =yielded= less traffic which is common factor on many other social media and or download sites.

This site is still however on top of the search page when I type 'anime music download'

A higher refresh rate, such as 120Hz or 240Hz, results in smoother motion and reduces motion blur, making it ideal for gaming, sports, and action-packed movies. Gamers should also check for variable refresh rate (VRR) compatibility. best tv for bright room
