Is Avatar an anime or cartoon?

There's a lot of dispute about Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra being a cartoon rather than an anime. The fans of the show are always saying that it should be considered an anime because it is largely influenced by the anime/japanese art style and each episode contains the same amount of frames a regular anime does. Also, the show is extremely well thought out and the details of the landscapes and designs of the clothes and characters are thoroughly thought out too. On the other hand, the only argument I have heard saying that Avatar The Last Airbender being a cartoon is based on merely the fact that it is made in America. Sorry if this pisses anyone off. I don't mean to get off on the wrong note with anyone. :c |

Despite it being heavily influenced by anime, I would still consider Avatar and Legend of Korra to be a cartoon because, at it's heart, it is American. The majority its staff is American, it was made for an English-speaking audience, and they just hired people to make sure that the style of the show was kept similar to that of their Asian influences. It is a great cartoon, but it is not an anime. With that in mind, I see no reason why some people might want to call it an anime, other than for the sake of it being called an anime. XD  |

I have the same opinion as Toyumi. Gendou.com (in relation to requesting music at least) says: "An animated TV show, movie, or DVD released by a Japanese company for a Japanese-speaking audience." Which is where I like to draw the line between 'Cartoon style' and 'Anime style'. Although I don't follow the series, I know that Avatar was a pretty good show, and I've heard mixed things about Korra, but I would refer to both of them as 'Cartoons'. Regardless of whether it is an 'Anime' or a 'Cartoon', it makes no difference. Why do the fans of the show care whether it is called an 'Anime' or a 'Cartoon'? Do you get more street cred or something if you say you're watching Anime?    |

Either you came over after visiting the Escapist Magazine site, or that's some perfect timing. I'm with the idea that anime is more of an art style, rather than being based on its location or where the bloodline of its cast and creators come from. Let me say that first anime is a type of cartoon, a more I guess refined part of cartoons that has a general choice of demographics. Cartoons or I guess American cartoons a generally for children. Though i'm not saying adults don't watch them. Anyway Avatar is an cartoon for posterity's sake since it is made in america for an american audience. If it were made for a Japanese market it would be an anime. So its not who but where. that matters.

Technically, anime IS cartoons (the term "anime" came from "animation", and in Japan it is usually referred to any kind of animation), but in anywhere besides Japan anime's referred as Japanese cartoons more than anything. With that in mind, no, Avatar is not an anime, since it's not made in Japan, though technically it CAN be called anime, in Japan that is. Yes, confusing, I know. Avatar is still a great show though, anime or not. |

I agree with Kurano and was going to say something similar. The term 'cartoon' is used universally as to 'anime' being "Japanese Animation/Cartoon" in Japan and known universally as anime. If an anime gets dubbed and moved to America it's still an anime though I think if an American show moves to Japan I think respectfully Japanese refer to it as american/foreign cartoon. Either way it works vice versa but anime is known by everyone, as only anime.

| I wonder about the definition that specifies for a Japanese audience. Afro Samurai was based on an American property and dubbed into English first, coming out in America first, though animated by a Japanese studio in the anime style. Is it true anime? How about the Thundercats cartoon that was animated by Studio Deen? That one had American writers and such I suppose, but I figure between the 2 of them, Afro Samurai and Thundercats'2011 blur the line. |
