transfer itunes library to a different computer
Link | by 31¥ on 2010-07-16 05:47:27
i followed the steps in this tutorial: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1329
but on step 6, nothing happens when i click "consolidate"
*note
this comp. has enough space so that shouldn't stop the process

i installed the program Copytrans. while it worked like a charm, its trial ver. is limited to 250 transfers only (there's still 1000+ left)

well i could access all music files in the old comp. then save them in a pen drive or something, but problem is, it's DEAD

so...help? :(

The methods here are slightly advanced so yea...

Well, what I always do if I need to transfer my iTunes playlist from one place to another is to copy over the iTunes folder and the music file. There is one problem though, your music file must be in the same directory as the previous computer (EG: C:\Users\Owner\Music\ on old pc and C:\Users\Owner\Music\ on the new one).
Once all your music folder and iTunes folder is copied over, open iTunes at the new PC go to File>Library>Import Library and open iTunes Music Library.xml. It WILL take some time for the files and playlists to load, depending on how much music your have. If you have more than 2000 songs, be prepared to leave iTunes over night. Also, make sure to set your PC not to go to sleep or go to screensaver - it'll crash the iTunes.

Another method is to use File>Library>Export Library. Save the file as whatever name you like, copy over your music to the new computer. The problem usually lies with where your music is. If your entire collection of music is in "C:\Users\Owner\Music\" in your old PC, then the music collection should be transferred to "C:\Users\Owner\Music\" in the new PC as well. So if your user name for your new PC is "Paul" well and you save it in "C:\Users\Paul\Music\" iTunes won't be able to find the file.

It's a bit wordy, I know, but I'm not that good at explaining.

I think it's easy for a Mac with Time Capsule though, right?

And yeah, I never tested it out yet to see what it actually does,
does exporting your entire library compared to the playlist,
just restore the entire playlist(s), compared to just one playlist?

Cause even though you might use the playlists you've set up,
every song in those playlists is a part of the library,
so instead of individually backing up playlists, exporting the entire library would save time,
of course it's larger so it'd take more time to back up or whatever.

@bloodymoon: so basically, i have to make empty folders in this new comp. first? i have another problem though: i barely manage my "playlists". although i do have like 5-10 playlists, most of my files are unlisted

ok assuming i got your 1st method right, clicking File > Library > Export Library shows, not Import Library, w/c only prompts me to save an XML doc

i haven't tried the 2nd yet...uhhh @_@ (i'm stupid lol sorry)

@devils-angel: it won't let me export the entire library for some odd reasons, same w/ playlists. i guess it should really be easy for a Mac, but i'm using XP

@31
Nope, it's import alright. There's a file named iTunes Music Library.xml inside the said iTunes folder. You import that. That's where all your playlist are listed ;). You have to copy over the iTunes folder found in your Music directory to the new PC.

You basically need the files to be in the same exact locations on your new PC basically.
I never used iTunes on a PC obviously, but I think the functions should be the same excluding OS details.

Cause with any media player I assume, if you add something into the playlist, then move that file somewhere else,
it won't be able to play it since it plays where ever the file was stored in that folder originally.

Why doesn't it let you export? Does it give you some error message, or any pop-up message?

The easiest way for you though, might be to just move every file over manually, even re-creating the playlists.
I've accidentally deleted HUGE playlists before, way before I found out how to back up playlists,
but yeah I mean it'll take you a long time depending how many songs you have, but if you're using a new PC anyways,
you can just simply move the files over to your HD, via external HD or something,
then just manually import them yourself. You can have iTunes opened up so you can see a replica.

If you really want to save the trouble, you might as well just move your files over to your new PC,
and just create new playlists with how many songs you have. A hassle, yes, but if you can't export for some reason,
then you'll have to manually re-create those playlists anyways.

You can even just move the files into itunes, and make THAT a playlist if you really don't give a crap, lol.

For me, I would really recommend having your keeping your music files in another hard drive. I personally saved mine in a portable hard drive and mapped my iTunes media location to that drive. I could just bring my whole drive of music to another pc and sync my itunes on the other pc with it

Yeah, that's a good idea, I thought about doing that myself actually, since I'm down to like 65 GBs of space left now on my Macbook,
and mainly those files are from music (and other files in between).
My external has like 750 GBs left, no problem to transfer everything over,
but there's always the risk of your HD crashing or getting corrupt, then you'll be in big trouble.

I haven't had anything happen yet though, but I back my Macbook up to my external HD.
I think the thing that sucks though, is you probably have to have your external HD plugged in at all times to listen to music, right?
Cause technically, if the HD is ejected or not inserted, those files aren't there.

It is rather troublesome to plug it in and out lots of the time and the problems with my hard drive crashing. But since I'm on a desktop, I set it to save my music files at another internal hard disk and set it to sync with an external hard disk. Something like using a RAID 1 but much simpler than that so if one fail, than I have another to fall back to :D. But if both fail than good game to me...

If it's just the library, just copy an entire iTunes folder in my music to your new computer

I just try to transfer my ipod touch music files using FileZilla (sFTP) using SSH to my PC before. I also can edit something like background and wallpapers using those. You can try it, but making this, there might some instances that your ipod touch/iphone might not secure itself against illegal access in a WiFi environment. Better tighten your security and password on using his. ^_^

Make a new backup of your iTunes library or update your existing backup before you move it. Even if you already have a backup of your iTunes library, this step makes sure you capture any changes and makes the process easier. The Apple official tutorial is complicated and difficult for navigation. For simple reason, this iPhone transfer is much more straight forward

As a Mac user, I usually transfer music between iPhone and Mac with iTransfer app.

As an iPhone user, in order to transfer music or listen to music on my all devices, I usually use a tool called itunes DRM removal
