Hey guys, I'm doing a research report on Geisha, which is a surprisingly resource-less topic. So if you know of any websites, books, or any other informative source I could use, please, please, please let me know! I kinda figured you all would have an idea of where to look. I am on a limited schedule and I've found the following books which I hope to obtain before the end of the weekend. Geisha - by Liza Dalby Geisha, A living Tradition - by Aihara Kyoko Geisha, The Life, The Voice, The Art - by Joid Cobb The Life of a Geisha - Elanor Underwood and Geisha A Life - Mineko Iwasaki Also any other discussion about Geisha is welcome here ^.^ So all you Memoirs of a Geisha fans out there feel free to fan talk!!! But please help me if you can!!! |

Have you tried The Glittering World of the Japanese Courtesan by Cecilia Seigle? Not sure if that would get you any more information than the ones you already have, but it's a suggestion if you're looking for more. |

haha! no, but I was looking at it!!! I'll search for it now! Thanks Jonathan! EDIT: Unfortunately they don't have that in any of the libraries near by... I'm probably going to end up ordering Women of the Pleasure Quarters: the Secret History of the Geisha off Barnes and Noble, or Amazon... |

Geishas are like, prostitutes. (I think? In my opinion? Correct me if I'm wrong.) |

They're entertainers in Japan, but they do prostitute I believe as one of their, "jobs", but it's a strong word to describe them as. It comes down to more depth, but they usually do shows and whatnot involving tradition. I've seen other Geishas from other nations doing tradition shows with music and whatnot. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geisha

@Anke - I wouldn't go with that one personally, given the other books you already have, but I understand that The Glittering World is a tad expensive, especially for a school report. |

@ Carrot - That is a common misconception, fueled by western beliefs... Though some Geisha did evolve from prostitutes, it war rare. Mostly that view of them came from the American, and British troops that occupied Japan after Would War II, they had noticed Geisha and hear the rumors about them and being young military men, they drew their own conclusions. Now, the Geisha girls realized this and since most of the "pleasure districts" were evacuated during the war, the Geisha that returned found out that prostitution was a quick way to make money... but yeah... true Geisha tend to refrain from entertaining men it THAT way... lol... They are usually more inclined to start an interesting conversation, or preform dances. Their official purpose is to make their clients feel good about themselves. @ DA - yeah thanks for the web site, I've added it to my source list! @ Jon - I bet I could find it cheaper... don't worry, I think I can find a used copy for like 7 bucks... that how I do all my research reports. I hope I can get that book, I read the overview on amazon and it looks like it might be helpful! |
