I looked long and hard for a thread about these remakes in both the many forum pages and on Google in various way -- no threads, so here we go! I just recently purchased both Star Ocean: First Departure, and Star Ocean: Second Evolution for the PSP. They are both remakes of the SNES and PS1 games; Star Ocean and Star Ocean: Second Story. Both games got complete overhauls in terms of everything [ expect the game sprites ] when it comes to graphics. Towns, Backgrounds, the overworld, and anime cut scenes — all redone absolutely amazingly. The music has also been put together in a remastered format from what I can tell, and each and every song from both games is enjoyable and perfect for whatever you're doing in the game! Now as far as the in-game stuff, like story and characters, both games are known historically as some of the best stuff around. Each character seems as unique as the last, and the fact that you have to pick and choose certain party members to keep and some to toss makes you want to play these games over and over again. The stories are the real magic though. Just like the 3rd Star Ocean [ Till the end of time ] and the only one of the series I've played, FD and SE suck you in during the first 5 minutes of gameplay. It makes you want more, and so you keep playing in the hopes of finished that next quest and reaching the next story event. However, Second Evolution has been the real winner so far. I started out playing First Departure, wanting to play them back-to-back, and logged about 5 hours in it before I came down with a virus/cold thing. Well that kept me down and out for a couple days, and when I finally felt better I decided to throw SE into my PSP to just try it out for a sec. That was almost two days ago, Monday Night, and I havent been able to put it down yet. I guess when people say Second Evolution [ or `Second Story` ] is the best out of allll the Star Ocean games [ including 4 ] they weren't lying. I just reached the halfway mark this morning, and I plan to keep going! But that's enough of me for now; Lets this thread going about these games! I beat First Departure not too long ago and I enjoyed it. I have to say though, I've never leveled up faster in any other game than I did in the final part of Star Ocean 1. I went in to the optional Cave of the Seven Stars just before the final boss at level 80 and 20 minutes later I came out at level 130 with almost no effort. Needless to say, the final boss was a joke after that. I liked the first one, and I had a special affection towards Pericchi, I loved the Private Action sequences that involved her, like her stalking Ioshua because she thinks he resembles a bird (she also got me the Bunny Whistle, which saved me soooo much time traveling around the map). I haven't played Second Evolution, and I probably won't now because a certain part of the game was spoiled for me while I was reading up on something else and now I don't really have the will to play it. I have to say though, First Departures ending was kind of depressing, all I did was watch the characters from my party stand around and talk about how they missed Roddick and were feeling lonely. Kind of a bummer. |

Sheesh, remakes are so unoriginal.
If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.
