Do you feel safer?

On Sept 11, 2001 four groups of terrorists seized several aircraft and used them to attack the United States. This is something everyone knows. There there have not been any attacks directly on US soil since then. The government has taken the attitude that we are safer and more protected as a result of things like a heightened sense of security, more protection at our borders and the Patriot Act and that for those reasons we have not been attacked again. In the meantime other countries who have also increased their internal security and awareness have suffered from terror attacks, Spain, England, India. Attacks have also occurred in countries that aren't even involved in this so called world wide war of terror. Terror groups have been arrested in Denmark, Germany, France and the UK but not in the US. My question is: Do you feel that the US is safer from an attack than before 9-11? My answer is no. I believe the only reason we have not been attacked is that whomever the terror groups are they have simply not made the decision to attack within the US. |

I do believe the US is a bit safer from that sort of thing, although I don't deny that it's still very possible for terrorist attacks to happen, it is a big land mass with a lot of people after all. I believe that it's only temporary though. The security efforts in the US have really been stepped up (sometimes to outright paranoid levels) but I can imagine all of those measures going away whenever the US decides to end its mission in the Middle East. If Bush were still in charge I can picture him declaring that the US had won the war on terror, but since Obama has his head on straight (as far as I've seen anyway) I don't see that happening. It's only a matter of time before security starts to slip again because people feel there is no longer a threat to be found. It can't really be helped though, people understand the measures in place to protect them when the threat has made itself apparent, no matter how inconvenient they may be. When the threat is out of the peoples mind however, they start complaining about the trouble it is, so the measures are relaxed. Travel out of or into the US wasn't exactly an easy process when they had security ramped up like it was. You had to go over a checklist of what you couldn't pack before you even started packing. |

And what about the rest of the world? London, Madrid, Mumbai, etc. Safer my ass.
If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.

Naturally I feel that some of the measures enacted by the Bush Administration post-9/11 have made the country safer, such as coordinating the efforts of intelligence agencies, though some privacy-invading tendencies worry me. Now the TSA restrictions, don't get me started, to put it nicely they are arbitrary, pointless, and merely serve to inconvenience travelers whilst not making them any safer. |

i agreee since i come from one of the affected countries i feel that the security was a bit loosened during the sep11 attack but after that i haven't heard of a thing called terrorist attack in the US. IT SURE IS A SAFER PLACE TO LIVE. |

I disagree. We are not only wide open for an attack but even today it would be easy for anyone to steal a plane and crash it into something. Even a small plane can do a lot of damage if you crash it into something with a partial load of fuel. Y09u can bring a small boat into a public marina or even drive across the mexican border with a truck load of people and weapons. Do you think that makes you safer? This was sent to me as a PM. "Sept 11, 2001 is just a bulls--t from US and israel." Does anyone believe this besides the sender? |
Re: Do you feel safer?

we're safe in the US! but the last eight years have made us look really bad, so, once we step outside america and onto a foreign country, badguys are like "muwahaha, u shall die". hence, only bad things happen to americans outside of america.

What are the reasons that the United States would attack Indonesia?? |
Re: Do you feel safer?

economic reasons I suppose. american imperialism and all that jazz. Although, we americans are hated as it is already because of bush, I doubt Mr.Obama would be inclined to attack indonesia for economic gain. it would create intolerable controversy.

@Ray- And seriously, can you imagine the look on everyone's face if Obama suddenly said "Let's attack Indonesia."? Talk about a wolf in sheep's clothing. It would stretch resources far too thin to be worth attacking another country. The US is already fighting a war in two other countries at the moment, so it isn't exactly a wise choice to start a third. Also, even with pressure from the US senate there is no way the American public, NATO or U.N would get behind an attack on Indonesia, unless of course Indonesia attacks one of the NATO countries or posed a serious threat. |

Even then you're resting on the assumption the United States would stand to gain something by attacking Indonesia. It would not. It is not a threat to US interests, nor will it become one in the foreseeable future; Indonesia is not it in any way geostrategically valuable valuable either. The United States does not wantonly attack developing nations. |

How do we do that Ray. How does on imperialize another country? Despite the fact I am not an American I can truthfully say that the United States would not invade a country unless it was considered a threat to the world. What Bush did in Iraq was illegal and he should be prosecuted for that. However don't take it out on the Americans. *idea for new topic* |

Basically what Ray means by Imperialism is the control of a less powerful country or people either by territorial control, economic control or simply by influence. |

Considering the state of the world economy I don't think anyone is going to be doing that for awhile. |

I'm curious Rin, under under whose authority was the Iraq invasion illegal? The American constitution does not prohibit aggressive wars. |

The only thing that made Iraq a mistake is the fact that Bush acted rashly and started a campaign without thorough consideration and careful planning. That really had his image affected... badly. Unless there's evidence that Iraq was attacked with no legal reasons, I will see no reason why Bush should be prosecuted for the campaign on Iraq. |

@ lady rin: bah, you know what I mean. well actually maybe not XD I meant that america "protects" other countries then takes advantage of their economy.
