Do you believe...

There are more than a few threads that start "Dp you believe in..." I have one as well but before I start I ask if you are not going to discuss this subject seriously then please don't post at all. We talk about God, religion, the supernatural and the unknown. We also talk about both the belief, love and fear of those same things. A long time ago I discovered that I believed in other things as well and my belief in those still exists. With that said here is my question. With belief in everything from God to ghosts to Santa Clause does anyone here believe in faeries, wizards, magic, dragons and the fey world? I do and my belief comes from many personal experiences. ![]() |

Each belief is unique in any way. Each belief did construct one and more traditions and customs, hence a culture stems out of that belief. It's up to those who believe to the beliefs that they've been living alongside their lives, and no point to quarrel over another different beliefs. Beliefs are humans' concepts towards life and humanity, I think. Before massive advancements of science and technology, these beliefs did relieved much of the past ancestors' curiosities. Now, new beliefs are made from research and experiments and/or personal experiences so forth, beliefs are still important because they establish communication to the audience of curious people. They are a kind of information humans would like to know in their own free will. I believe vampires exist~~~ and dragons would probably be existed billions of years ago. That's my beliefs. |

Science cannot provide all of the answers. Being a scientist myself I have learned this. I have tried to explain many things I have experienced both through some sort of belief or faith or by applying science and there are instances where faith, belief or science have no answer or resolution. It doesn't matter if it happened only once or if is repeatable as science demands there is no logical answer. So the illogical has to provide one. Even Arthur Conan Doyle believed this when he said "If you've have eliminated the possible then the answer must be in the impossible". Whatever it is it does exist and it is very real. We can create all of the labels we want but it does exist. Today as an educated adult I could create a very plausible theory for the fey world to exist along side our own especially in lieu if recent discoveries in the word of physics. However an eight year old who survived falling into a deep stream without help still believes that faeries rescued her since that's what she saw. I have seen them more than once and they are not always friendly and that's from a different experience. ![]() |

lol, that quote of Doyle is very close to one Spock said on Star Trek Undiscovered Country. W00t0s is right, each belief is unique, and it's quite related to one's personal experience and all, that's why, at least I think, it's the reason so many persons get angry when their positions on a certain matter are attacked, even so when it's done on the plan of ideas, of logical discourse, and not simply disdain. I don't believe in vampires, nor faeries. But I do believe in aliens, but I don't think they'll try to conquer earth, probably we'd fight them in some sort of colonial wars. About dragons, not on this planet, perhaps in other planets. |

I'm pretty much a very realistic person, if you don't show the proof, I would not believe it. But however, some stuffs had forced me to believe in the, eek, some people might call rubbish. I.E, faeries. People over here call em the Bunian. Personally I don't believe in them but somehow, I couldn't say what I heard as a mental play. Its just haard to convince people that you are seriously not having hallucinations or imagining things. People could make a thousand conclusion to go against what witnesses had experienced, some could have scientific explanation, but not all. If dinosaur fossils was never discovered then perhaps people would consider them as mythical creatures. ![]() |

people believe in what they wanted to believe, for the others, they will try to come up with explanation to deny the existence of what they don't believe I like what Japanese says about their God, if you believe their existence, they will continue exist until no one longer believes their existence, faith gives them power to exist, pretty much apply to most other things |

Probably not! I'm a confirmed agnostic, so I don't believe in a personal God (which I think you're implying here). As for the other denizens of the 'fey world', I don't think I do. I mean, sure, they may exist, but I'd have to see them to believe in them. |

Here's something I've discovered after a long time spent among anime-folk, otakus, what have you: 1. The most down-to-earth, kindest people I've come across at cons and the like are generally Catholic. I've met a rare jew and every once in a while I come across a protestant. These people are not overly fanatic about the anime they watch, but they still cosplay and such. 2. The obverse, those who have no faith (more like agnostic than atheist) have a tendency to be more irrational. They're the ones I've seen watching hours on hours of anime straight, quoting kamina like a bible-thumper quotes psalms, and on the whole failing the most basic elements of logic and reasoning. Nothing is wrong with these people, I would even support the claim that these people have had a positive effect on the culture surrounding anime. However, these are the same people who don't necessarily succeed in school, or socialize with others. It appears that I'm taking the stance that religion leads to a more successful lifestyle. This isn't necessarily so. I've met plenty of atheists and agnostics who get along just fine, but this does run congruent to the idea that there is a "god gene," which I have a number of problems with, but that's for another thread. |

I'm undecided when it comes to religion...or maybe just Christianity...I need a bit more convincing to believe in "God" than just having blind faith. I just don't appreciate it when people try to push Christianity on me...phrases like "YOU'LL GO TO HELL IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE IN GOD" piss me off... I take a bit of offense to what slug said...I may not be a person of faith, but I don't think of myself as being irrational, I don't watch hours and hours of anime straight (I rarely watch anime), and I definitely get As in school (maybe a few Bs XD) and have lots of friends. It's just different for every person... Back to the subject, I don't really believe in faeries, magic, and whatnot. If I see something with my own eyes, then I will. I will listen to scientific reasoning, not opinions. I'm a questioner, I don't believe in something for no reason. I think that's rational...isn't it? >___< I just find it hard to believe in something without reasoning, but I'm open-minded to the concept(s). ![]() |
Re: Do you believe...

First and foremost, I apologize for any offense you take to my posts, but bear in mind that I'm not doing it with that intention in mind. Admittedly, one of the problems with Christianity is this idea that some do blindly believe in God to the point of irrationality. To be honest, the best Christians take everything in stride; in moderation. The reason a lot of people believe in Christianity is partially this idea of heaven, but the majority of "true" Christians cling to the ideals, not necessarily the idea of a God in heaven or the devil in hell. Quite simply, the core values - like, the ten commandments - are what Christians believe. Religion was used to control people before, but is now a place for people to get their priorities straight. I could go into more depth, but the point is, the "YOU'LL GO TO HELL IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE IN GOD" is hardly the basis of Christianity, or Judaism, or even Islam. As a matter of fact, Christians (except the fucking born-agains. They can go to hell for all I care) believe that there is a place for everyone in heaven. Sure, it sounds corny and crap, but it's true. Obviously, there are exceptions, but I'm just speaking from my own experiences with people who don't have any pre-existing faith will have a tendency to seek something to believe in. Why do you think people even consider joining dangerous cults? People just need something to believe in. |

People need to people in something to make the world make sense. Thats why the greeks, romans, japanese, and everywhere else came up with thier own gods and myths-to explain the world. It just so happens that Christianity, which represented the most compassionate god, became immensly popular. People want to beleive that the world is equivelance, that what comes around goes around, thus the belief of hell came out. God only exists in peoples minds, in my opinoin. |
Re: Do you believe...

I don't believe in any paranormal or supernatural things. If it isn't supported by scientific evidence then I won't accept the claims. Anything else is irrational and illogical. |

Believe in such things....... Of course I do! Why? T_T I've met a real ghost before and it frightened me like I was never scared before. Still it does give me a scar in the heart and to never question the existence of ghosts etc. A little advice if you are to come across of ghosts or whatsoever that resembles a ghost: Don't be scared. ![]() |
Re: Do you believe...

yes don't be scared... because they don't exist. They are all in your mind, just an illusion you create by yourself. Humans are good at creating illusions. |

hmmm..well if u have seen one before..not to be scared of them is one way to go..n we cannot pretend that we don't scared of ghosts if one pops out in front of you, right? umm~i've seen one before..it scares the hell out of me..but still,i like to walk in the dark places, questioning myself whether where, when or how the ghost will pop out.. come to think of it..my neighbors seen the ghost for quite a while after i saw it..and where i saw it is at my house's door. n i sleep in the living room with my head placed near that door where the ghost pop out before..it is scary, but whatever. |

What slug said earlier, has some truth to it. two years ago, I posted a thread asking how to improve my unbelievably socially-inept anime club. Waaay too many members had the exact descriptions that slug has given. plus they had no faith in god. It's really not a cause-effect deal here, but maybe just coincidental. Then again, they were freshmen, too.... ![]() |
