How does video gaming at a young age affect the way we learn when we grow up?

How? Videogames do have its distinct features that appeal certain gamers, and young-aged gamers are possible too. Like first-person shooting games with epic storyline and a kind of violence that is appropriate enough within the game.
Young-aged gamers use their ability to differentiate between real and unreal, that's the first impact for sure. I played Mortal Kombat when I was 7 and I found that game was OTT and awesome and of course it wasn't real. It create a kind of interest in me, that is I like fighting games, martial arts and its principles and disciplinary terms behind the arts throughout my growing up years.
Videogames are educational in nature, they are, really! They have the power to influence gamers, from lifestyles to fanaticism, be it good or bad, they are gonna affect gamers of any age in the end, anyway.

video games enhance motorskills and hand-eye coordination. sometimes even foot-eye coordination, as in the case of the child prodigy of DDR. They help your problem solving skills, depending on the games you play.

jack thompson on the otherhand argues that video games will turn you into a bum or a violent emo kid who will shoot up his school one day.

Video games, as RayStorm said, help problem solving skills. They also instill proficiency and a fondness for technology. Some gamers go on to design and program games in the future. Many games disguise lessons as games (remember Math Blasters?). It turns a seemingly boring lesson into something fun, and the child willingly learns, sometimes without even realising it. Kids these days have an especially wide variety of learning games (Leapfrog,Dora the Explorer, etc.) It effects the way people learn nowadays from the dull rote memorization of the past to a more interactive learning used in classrooms today.

People are quick to blame videogames for troubled young adults, but really, it also depends on their environment. At a young age, if a child is seeking violent videogames, it most likely comes from a problem that already existed. Most children will seek games for release, and thats what they do. Violent games aren't whats making children grow up into killers, but I do believe they augment existing problems. I still think they do more good than bad. I learned to read because of zelda and dragonquest as a kid. (sorry if the post wasn't that coherent, im off to bed)

videogames aren't bad for your eyes. give me scientific proof that it does.
EDIT:
I have in my hand an Advance Wars DS cartridge. I have stared at it, in my hand, for 10 minutes and nothing has happened to my eyesight. I would stare at it all day, but that would be boring.

conclusion:video games themselves aren't bad for your eyes.

but of course if one sits in front of the screen all day, of course they will strain their eyes, but you gotta have a limit ya know.

Hmm......

video games enhance reflect and hand-eye coordination. They help your problem solving skills, depending on the games you play.
Video games aren't bad for our eyes...
Proof : I usually playing video games for hours(3-6 hours) without rest. But, my eyes still normal

Not all gamers are individualist. Many of gamers are individualist because they rarely meet another person in real world.

again it depends on what games they are playing. MMO games tends to create a virtual community, and they usually do events where players of that MMO meets together "Grand eyeball".

Edit: about the radiation that Andy was talking about he was probably referring to those old picture tube TV's which was said to generate radiation(I think some things wrong in this sentence).

well at our place since there are internet cafes. guilds are more often formed by group of people that goes to those cafes. they meet with each other almost every day.

they talk about various stuff other than games. it kind of sparks friendship. they like the same game they talk about it and it just ends up talking about a lot of other stuff, before you know it they are hanging out with each other on gigs and stuff.

Um...it depends...
Sometimes we can learn something from it, or sometimes it enhances our skill...
But mostly it's addicting... XD

the stereotype of a lonely video-gamer is outdated and retarded! I play mario kart DS with 7 other friends on the bus, and there are two separate rooms in case we have more.

and don't be so hasty to judge gamers as individualists. there is such a thing as MULTI-PLAYER games. and many gamers nowadays have lives (wow can you believe that?) outside the gaming world.

Yeah, I know there is such thing as multi-player, virtual community, but it's just a meeting in cyber world not in real world.
It's easy to find a gamer who said him/herself not individualist but s/he can't speak in front of people, but there's a lot of gamer who can speak in front of people better than the other.

Basically, I agree with Raystorm, nowadays many gamers have lives, so not all gamers are individualist.

but there those who cannot perform sports because of their physical limitation, and not every body is interested in sports.
about the radiation most modern TV sets and monitors are no longer that dangerous to your health. besides the sun also generates ultra violet rays so its next to impossible to avoid radiation. well just have to control exposure to these.
don't play under the sun all day don't sit in front of the TV all day.

LOL shige~ what you said make me remind of South Park's episode on World of Warcraft xDDD

It's just so stereotypical to say gamers are damn lonely. That's why consoles have voice communication access for gamers while online-playing. Just to make things exciting. I am not lonely and I do love to play PS2 and PS3 games. I never think that I'm lonely, all I could think of getting rid of my stress and boredom while playing videogames. Better than whining about loneliness bugging oneself.
There's a health warning in every video game leaflet: Stop playing every 15 minutes. It's really impossible, but hey, each gamer has the responsibility to take care of their health and know the effects.
I like sports, especially tennis. What happens if the weather's so bad for outdoors or even I'm broke to play indoor tennis, I have Virtua Tennis 3 on PS3. Hah! Videogames brings convenience in my life.

Brain Training definitely changes the attitude on videogames, as it's purpose to improve skills of gamers - be it numerical, memory etc. That's very educational.

The downside is where some gamers take some games literally. The Columbine School massacre and the Virginia Tech massacre are the best examples. I don't need to elaborate them, they sound so awful, so you guys should know what they are.

video games > sports in terms of playability.
you can play videogames anytime, anywhere. sports? gotta get the equipment, set up the field...get the ball....
nice try at mocking gamers shige, but your logic is outdated.

speaking of physical activity......*points to nintendo wii, DDR, Guitar Hero, Beatmania* we've got that covered. oh, and there's also that police game that lets you move around to dodge bullets. and that game was released like 3+ years ago. and those boxing games too, though I've never played those.

there are also local arcades. I think it was banned in the US. but here at our country and japan there are arcades.
a sense of competition really burns here since there are a lot of VS games and even more people. also what Raystorm mentioned games DDR, etc. are also found there (we only got DDR at our place).

interaction is really going on here. talk about techniques and strategies.

in japan they even held tournaments(we did have one before but I wish I was in Japan) players from across japan are gathered together to test who are the best of the best. some of them are like super stars(they got fans). teams are also formed.

oh. I heard from X-play(a game review show to those who might not know) when the went to japan and check out akihabara. because Adam was envious of the arcades there. that was a few years ago though. I think he did say it was banned at the US.
May I just did not hear it right. >.<

yes, I mean it in every sense when I say ANYTIME, ANYWHERE. portable handhelds such as the DS, PSP, gameboy sp, that nokia thing, even those games on your cellphone and ipod. can you play sports in a car? of course not. that's absurd.

the best part about video games is that ANYONE can play them. wait, except for people who can't use their hands. no I take that back. they can play DDR. and there are pheripherals (i think thats the word) that you wear as a helmet and it uses brainwaves to play the game. and that was like in the 90's. there are some in the works at the moment, though I haven't heard of any successful ones.

games and sports overlap. what is a game of basketball? it's a game and a sport. DUH. football is a game and a sport. so is football (we call it soccor in america).
