Agreed. Your best bet would be to find a professional somewhere near you whom teaches classes or gives in-home lessons on how to draw, do art, etc - they can most liekly teach you how to draw the same artstyle as comics/manga. |

U know how i learned to draw manga?Well, last time I was obsessed with CLAMP's artworks and was determined to draw exactly like them. Before I knew it ,BAM!!,I was drawing in a style of my own!!I also printed some artworks from deviantart.com and tried copying them.It really helped. So,try to create your own style.Keep trying!! |

I'm no expert but i do have some experience so i can lend some advice. I took classes in many fields of art to sharpen my skills as well as see what it is like in a studio. 1: COMMITMENT!!!!!! - The most important thing you need to know before you start creating manga, art, or anything is this: COMMITMENT!!!!!! not drawing skills, not what equipment you use, nothing of the sorts! COMMITMENT is the most important cause without it your dead before you even start. You have to commit to the project & not give up on it...which means you have to work hard. 2: Work! Work! Work! - Creating art or manga takes alot of work. It's not as easy as it looks. It may look easy for a professional but they spent years of work to get to that point. From experience, believe me it is VERY hard work to be able to create a manga....although if you work hard enough the rewards are great. 3: Practice makes perfect! - Like TM-san said...draw! draw! draw! Try to develop your own unique style, something to set you apart from others. To do this you have to practice alot to find the style that fits you. It could be anything from hair styles, eyes, coloring etc. Make sketches, doodle, anything you can do everyday to get to where you want your drawings to be. To get an idea of what you can do...use references at first. You can use your fave artist/mangaka for example. Copy their style but use your own ideas to make the drawing different. Once you are comfortable with it, draw different things using that style. Experiment! 4: Once upon a time... - Once you have your style of drawing all laid out, than it is time to use that thing between your ears to think of a concept or idea for your manga. You can be the greatest artist EVER but without a story being a mangaka is next to impossible. - first decide what kinda story you want your manga to be..whether it be romance, school life, fantasy...etc. Jot down those ideas in a notebook so you don't forget, like character names, descriptions of people or places, stuff like that. Again use references if you want ideas. For me i used the Holy Bible as a source. - Once you have what you need than you can sorta write down the basis for your story. What i did was summarize what will happen in my story, writing what happens in the beginning, middle & end. It's up to you to decide how you want to do that, some use different methods but as long as you know what the story is about than you can really start making a manga. - Some use story boards which is what pros do...it's too long for me to explain how it works so i'll let you do homework on it :P 5: WOW! He's good looking...or Hey! she's cute or WHAT IS THAT?! aka. Character creation! - When you have ideas of what you character looks like with the notes you've taken than it is time to bring them to life. Not much i can say with this cause everyone has their own way of creating characters. Main thing is use your style that you 'hopefully' perfected & come up with ideas that you think people will like to read about. ******************************************** There are more steps to follow to be able to create a manga but i think these 5 steps are good starting points to use for beginners. More complex steps include the aforementioned STORY BOARDS, SHEET TONES, CG (which you can learn from threads on this forum), types of utensils or equipment to use, are you doing it SOLO or in a GROUP (like CLAMP), etc. etc. etc...... Of course if you wanna know or learn more you can always read books about it, search on the internet for useful tips, take classes (like i did), ask friends or visit your local comic book store to see where you can learn about things. There are many things you can do to get you started on becoming a mangaka. But like i said as the very first step....you have to WANT TO DO IT! Commit to it, work hard at it. If you are dedicated, committed & work hard...who knows maybe you will become GUESTS of HONOUR at anime conventions!! GOOD Luck!! |

hope i can share something.. in the early days when i was a kid (long time ago hehe) i made some home made comics as i see this in some newspaper stands, then i made my own storyline and my own style. and i even sold this! maybe .50 cents or $1 for a complete comic story book. my only material is a clean paper and a blue pen. as we can see right now, manga / anime is beautiful and appeals to anyone - but this is no different than art - you have to draw it first before u can get what u want - and that takes practise. i dont mind if my drawings are not the same like Clamp, TOEI, Kyoani or even from Marvel or DC comics - the important thing is, you catch the readers attention with good storyline. thats the important thing right? there are a lot of anime crap out there with good artistic drawings but story/plot is bad. the anime crayon shin-chan was criticized because of its scary artwork but was praised by the world over because of funny antics and excellent story telling. i think this thread must be closed - as no one will ever teach you how to draw here anyway. work on it on your own! |
