After High School...
Link | by devils-angel on 2008-08-25 18:33:38
Okay, doubt a thread like this was made, but this can help me out in a way and give me some ideas for the future.
I'm finally a senior this year, and of course that means it's like more important than any other grade now.
I'm already stressing out about college, and where I'm heading off to after I graduate,
if that even since all this stuff is just a bit straining.

I was wondering where some of you guys went after high school.
Did you guys go to work or did some of you guys go straight to college?

As of now I have no idea what I want to do,
though my parents and even teachers are kind of like pressuring me into choosing a college even though I'm not ready.
There's always taking a year off to fully settle yourself down, but that's kind of risky.
I know a few kids that are doing it, though they're a bit different than me.

I'm looking to gain some good knowledge out of this, from people who have already passed this step in life already.

Well, I have some advice. If you really aren't ready to go to school, don't sweat it and try something else. I'd more advise you to look up a local (read: community) college and try a few classes to get that 'taste' of college.

In other words.. stop being so indecisive! :)

Rather, don't take up too much time thinking about what you want to do (we all have those moments) and try to settle yourself into things that you'd seriously consider. However long it takes for you, it will all pay off in the end. That's what we'd hope anyway. ;)

here's my take on this...

take your time..
dont rush into college if you feel that its not right for you...
if you think taking a break (a semester or a year) then take that time
and plan your next step...

rice is right, the problem is not "what to should you do?"..there's a lot of possibilities out there
the problem is "what to choose"..choose a path that you think is right for you...
plus let your parents and teachers pressure you, they are there to guide you, not to choose for you

-.-" i just got reminded that im gona finish highschool soon as well! Dx
im not that determined with the course im going to take in the future since ive always wanted to become a pilot but everyone in the family is just so against it and seems like no one's plannng to change their minds xD
so yeah my mom wants me to take up either medicine or law on college.
med. sounds less brain-boggling than law so im gona take up that x.x
i dont like it much but ive got no time to waste cos it'll take me a couple of years to finish the course but im gona take it anyway xD

* thats the future plan * /rofl

Ahahaha...i've just graduated this year!
Now i'm in college...taking food tech ^^

My advice for you:
Try to find out (as soon as possible) what your interest is.
That will help you determine what to do after you graduated (college/work/whatever)
It will be nicer and easier for you if you do what you really like, right? As long as it's not a criminal....

Or maybe you can ask some suggestion from your family/friends
Oh...one more thing...don't be stress...ok?^^

I went to college after finishing school. I want to go to college anyway instead of getting jobs. To me, it's at least the safe step for me to take before anything else. College life is way better than school, but the independence given can make things difficult for some students (yep, I'm not fooling around). To tell you the truth, college is more than about fun and games~ it's a lot of study-smart and hardwork (not fooling around again). But that shouldn't stop you from having fun in college!

If you really want to go to college, you should know what course you want to take. If you blindly take a course just YOUR FRIEND takes it, you're on your way to hell (unless your friend's interests match yours, that may be heaven-sent xD).

Listen to advice (more than just your parents) from experienced graduated college students~ that'll motivate you to stick to your preferred course.

If you take medicine, it takes ages to finish up the course, and it's a very expensive course. It could rip you off greatly. Don't see medicine as a course that's guaranteed to secure your future career and wealth, and a thing for parents to superbrag over. Even worse, the standards that you must excel modules (subjects) within the med course are high. Isn't that really stressful??

Okay, if your parents still stop you from taking pilot class, take Business or Accounting. These two courses are filled with common sense and the basic maths, hardly making much stress for you. Job demands in the business/finance sector are always stable every year.

If you actually don't know what to do, then there's the problem... I for example, at least had planned to go to college way before my senior year, tough i didn't know what to choose. Then when i'm in 11th grade, i decided the major i'm gonna take already. So in the last year of my high school it's only about choosing the university.

If you're really not sure, 1 year break to decide everything.... Mmmmm sounds okay if you think that's the best for you, though maybe your parrents would be against that considering the time you'l lose... If that happens then make sure all 1 year doesn't go to waste, don't just laze around oy! XD

Rice's advice sounds good as well.

Hahah, hope all the advice in this thread wouldn't confuse you even more. Some said rush it some said take your time...

WOAH DA. you're still a senior? I wouldn't have guessed. :P
thought you were some old professional dude.

As for me, I went straight to college (freshman right now).
On a trimester thing to finish early (but not really, still mapping up 4years of my life in school)

about you, well it depends on you really.
What do you want? what's best for you and all that jazz.
I don't think you really have to rush in to this.
but my main point would be to know what you really really want to do the rest of your life since you're practically on your own now. :P
so think about it~~~

^ like he said, this may confuse you (rush or not to rush) --- I agree on both ends :O
you get to do a lot more things when you're young. and people recognize skill when you're uh, not-old XP (check out Mozart man!!!)
but then, if you rush your decision, you might end up regretting. so think of it as deciding fast yet accurately.
uh, catch the drift? o___o

lookie Bill Gates, he's a Harvard drop-out ayt? but he knew exactly what he wanted and swindled his way to the top. XD
so, yea. don't listen to me, I don't know what I want either. :))

edit:

@ jRa : if you're not sure, drop it. -,-
you'll end up dropping it in the future anyway OR you'll end up regretful I think (which is worse? o__o)
don't waste your time, take your time thinking about it.

w00t0s: well i dont see it as something so stressful and my mom said that ill be able to handle it!... but the prob is im lazy sometimes! @_@ and besides the family almost everyone r doctors /rofl from my grandmother down to my mother xD
im a "bit" interested in the course as well! i dont think i can survive in
accounting! snaps im so slow at math! x.x no more like "i hate math so much!"

jRa: aw thats sad but since u enjoy studying why not try the course for just a year and switch later if u still dont find it good x.x but surely its hard to take up something u dont like.

well DA, When I finished highschool I went staright to the university.
Becasue here in Colombia we don't have what you guys call college.

In any case I didn't take any rest time. But i know a friend who did that,
but it was becasue he didn't get in the university he wanted the first year XD

I really don't know what tell you to do. But if you don't know wht to study, I think ius better for you
to find a job or something in the meantime.

anyway, good luck

I want to try to see if I develop a taste for going to college for something relating to GFX/WSD Design.
I think I can get in contact with all three of the Ai in my state, but we'll see, I gotta ask around for help.

I was hoping to find more people who have headed this way already so I can know first hand better.
You ever ask one of your friends what they want to do,
and they come outta nowhere with like something you NEVER thought they'd say?
Like you ask one of your air headed friends and then they want to become a teacher or something.

Not gonna rush it, though I want to know ASAP so like, I can prepare for it ahead of time.
I might try harder in WSD or something this year, maybe enter some state competitions, we'll see.

I myself am planning on after I get done with this last year of high school education, IM heading to either Midlands Tech, a Junior College, or ana ctual university - it all depends on my grades and test scores.

I may goto tech to get a couple college-level courses so it will be easier to transistion into a bigger college or university, and that way I wont be so unprepared or surprised - sorda liek instead of jumping into a cold pool, you slwoly get in the pool so you get use to the water first.

That's my advice, as it is what I myself am going to be doing, Lol.

I'm a sophomore in college right now, and let me just say this, College isn't bad at all.

Assuming you're in a financial state that you can afford it, then I say use the first year to figure out what you really want to get into, and experiment with it. I know some people that have changed majors 2 or 3 times that are completely unrelated to each other and he'll still be graduating on time since he just had to play a bit of catchup and take some summer classes to get on track. And then there's people like me who already know what they want to go into and are sticking with it and enjoying it(it's rare, but we do exist).

The big thing with college though that really makes it unique and worth it is living on your own and being 100% self sufficient. Nobody's gonna tell you to go to bed before 4AM, nobody's going to tell you that you even have to go to class sometimes. And usually that's pretty cool so long as you can keep yourself in line when necessary.

Or if you still feel uneasy with the whole college idea, try going to a technical school or state college to get your feet wet and figure out what you want to get into then.

@Devil's Angel: I've got 2 friends taking courses mainly focused on Graphics and Webdesign kind of stuff (I think it's called Digital imaging and computer graphics design or something fancy according to them). Both of them seem to be having the time of their lives when it comes to their classes that aren't general education courses. I'll be working on Differential Equations homework and they'll be talking about how they just made the coolest rotoscope vector using only a script engine or w/e...

From what they've told me and what it seems like from my perspective, if you find yourself to really enjoy art and already know the ropes of things like Photoshop, Paintshop pro, or even Adobe Premier (I thought it was only movie software but apparently they use it too?) then you should be good to go and enjoy it.

All I know is whenever I want to pimp out my blog I know who to talk to, and whenever they need anything ELSE computer related they know who to talk to as well :D

Beware the quiet people, You don't know their intentions
(small signatures are sooo much cooler since they don't annoy people trying to read through posts!)

Oh... DA you're a highschool senior D: I am surprised..

Well I was also indecisive at first about college... I really had no plans on it, and I really had no interest on the courses...
I really wanted something like GFX Design too but my parents stopped me, and well I think I enjoy my what I chose now anyways.. (Information and Computer Studies)
It just settled in nicely in my life and now I am feeling a bit routined by it... something I would have never expected before stepping into college...

At first I really didn't know what to do... I tried asking for advice from other but it was always the same "Follow what you want...etc..."
I think resting for a year would be some sort of loss somehow.. but I just don't know really..
And right now, it feels like the same days I used to spend in high school, only that I had more responsibilities and commuting to the university was hell...

I think you should chose what you think seems to fit your tastes, well for me I even got to researching about the courses in the internet...

Goodluck with this DA, sorry I just poured in my brain spill, and not actual advice

[@Haxor] Yeah I was talking to one of my good friends and he says I should head down to the Ai Philadephia.
He said I can easily get in, and with three years of media background (including this year), I might be set already.
I need to ask him if the SATs applied to him entering, but I don't really think so.

He also mentioned you take other classes depending on your major,
but he also told me that they're not really tough at all, in which your case aren't general educational type classes but will only benefit for you.
Not sure how much the cost is for like college, the cheapest college, most expensive,
but he said "if you have 20 grand laying around :D" so I guess we'll see.
Maybe if I enter and win some state competitions, I can maybe get a scholarship or the cost lowered, if possible. ^-^"

The thing is what to do after college. I know you can make some nice money as a web site designer though.
I think it also helps in the future cause you get more free time (future family, spouse, friends, personal, etc.).

[@dark] No worries, I also want to know about what everyone is currently doing or will do.
I'm mostly looking for some people who are out of college so I know how it feels to be out of college.
Going to college is huge, after graduating high school which is one big step in life as well.

Whatever it will be, a computer will be involved cause I wanna stay active here as much as I can and watch anime, etc. XD
Oh, and why were your surprised by my grade in high school? :P
For some reason a few other people seemed surprise as well?
Am I too young? Too old? Someone you didn't expect to be? ^-^"
