Slayers Revolution is getting DROPPED!!!!
Link | by on 2008-08-17 14:50:59
ok, i was just looking if the 7th ep came out subbed, and this is what i found:

"Dropping Slayers Revolution

Yes, this is a sad day. We received a cease & desist order from FUNimation Entertainment asking us to stop the fansubbing of Slayers Revolution. We, both Static-Subs and Eclipse Production, have agreed to comply with their statement. It is unfortunate that we have to stop working on such a great show; however I hope you all understand the decision we are making. Thank you for your support for the 6 episodes we have released. Please enjoy the rest of the show when the DVD gets released in your local area. See you again on our future projects.

Static-Subs and Eclipse Production"

Haven't been into the new Slayers series, but I can tell this is unfortunate.
Too bad for fans, though you almost always have to expect this with every anime.

Though sometimes there's at least one fansub that'll continue subbing it,
so I guess people will have to hope for that at least... other wise, it's just too bad.

Well like Ren said, you just have to wait for the official release and pick that up instead.

Funination company likes to use "cease & desist order" to ask the subbers to stop subbing the series, which is why i don't like it because they are abusing the use of their authorities.. If they say that "Slayers Revolution" is licensed then i still can accept.. But now i don't think other subbers will ever pick up already.. Once funination starts to use the "cease & desist order", that's it, gone.. =_=

I dunno, I'm kind of on the fence about this.

For one thing, Funi doesn't really have much authority to say this yet.
If they held the rights to the series, than yes, it'd be much more understandable.
But the fact is they don't. (I think)

On the other hand, fansubbing and file distributing is kinda...illegal. -__-
You're kind of stealing money from the Japanese creators.
And before anyone says that people Japan watch anime for free, you have to understand that on TV they have ads and whatnot so there is revenue there.

But regardless, some other group will probably pick up and start subbing it again.
It usually always happens regardless of these requests, just like with Romeo x Juliet.
There are just too many groups and people to deal with for them to keep threatening all of them.
Although it might deter certain groups, others will most likely be determined to keep subbing it.

Oh uh.. i hope this doesn't turn into another long discussion about the legality of fansubbing, but what the heck.. here's my 2 cents on the issuue.

For one, it is true that downloading anime ish like stealing money from the animation comapanies in Japan, but let's face it, animes were never originally meant for audiences other than those in Japan (or the very few outside of Japan that can speak the language).

It's becoming more common nowadays, where an anime is already licensed before it's released. I'm not sure how this works, but i can guess that the animation company goes into a sort of collaboration deal with a foreign licensing company. This usually happens when the anime comes from a successful manga. Still, this doesn't happen quite that often.

More often what happens is that, the anime is made and meant solely for Japanese audiences. Here's the question. Did fansubbing in general come first or companies that license animes for foreign viewers come first?

I may get shot for this.. didn't licensing companies just jump on the bandwagon (so to speak) when animes became more popular overseas when fansubs made it so~? It's like water bottling companies selling us bottled water when we can get tap water at home for next to nothing~~ just instead of telling us about health concerns, licensing companies bombard us with the legality of the whole thing. Are we really ripping off money from the animation companies~?? They never included the foreign viewers in their target sales group in the first place anyway. We're really only ripping money from licensing companies, who i do not have any grudges on, since they do provide a service to anime fans who can't get their anime any other way. BUT~! *breathes deeply*

Err.. to conclude this.. it's not the money that's important (well, not as much anyway) XD Fansubs will always be there unless one day animes get shown at the same time in foreign cable as they show on Japan Tvs, not very likely in the near future.

sumimasen~! this turned out more of a rant than i wanted it to be..

coming back to the topic proper XD can anyone recommend another good fansubbing group~? since this 'cease and desist' order seems to be the real deal. I wonder if Eclipse will cont on their own~?

@Bk, this sentence "unless one day animes get shown at the same time in foreign cable as they show on Japan Tvs, not very likely in the near future." well, it is true in singapore.. XD They removed any obscene or whatsnot though.. So that if kids are watching, they are safe.. lol.

-___- K, I'm sorry for opening up a can of worms, but I feel that I need to justify some things as the R1 anime industry isn't doing very well at all right now.
Most of my points are going to only concern the North American industry since that was what I was initially talking about.

"For one, it is true that downloading anime ish like stealing money from the animation companies in Japan, but let's face it, animes were never originally meant for audiences other than those in Japan (or the very few outside of Japan that can speak the language).

Yes that's true, but that doesn't mean that we as foreigners don't want to watch it.
That is why American anime companies were created in the first place, so that we wouldn't have to pay an enormous of money for an import that we couldn't even understand. And later, fansubs.

From what I understand fansubs have been around for a long time, starting around the early 90s(?) when fans would sub VHS tapes and then show them off at clubs and what not.
However, this was when the American industries were very very small, only licensing a small amount of titles and then editing and "Americanizing" them as well.

Also, from what I understand, a very small portion of the money that we pay for DVDs actually goes to the licensing companies as some does go to the original creators in Japan.
We don't want to rob the creators that we hail so greatly now do we?
I find it extremely hypocritical when we go around talking about how much we love anime when we don't even support it.
At least if you watch fansubs, buy the official DVDs when they are released or find some other legal way to watch them like through digital downloads on itunes.

I agree that over the recent years with digital downloads, the anime fanbase has indeed grown a considerable size.
But that doesn't mean that they jumped on the bandwagon per se.
The companies just expanded their holds on more series to accommodate that fanbase.
You have to remember, not everyone downloads digital fansubs.
There are many fans who like to obtain a hard, physical copy of a DVD.

Ah, money.
Everything's about money including anime.
It's a form of entertainment which virtually exists to make money just like movies and music.

-___- What was my point again?
Ah, screw it. This panel at Otakon can explain it better than I can.
Fansubbers and the industry try to brainstorm together to make the situation better and clears up many misconceptions.^^

Anyway, I'm sure another group'll pick the series up. K, enough ranting. ^^

Jow-san, points taken, and agreed to a certain degree XD

Let me just add that just as your comments are mostly concerning the north american market, it holds true on my side as well, as in i'm also only speaking from my point of view in a place where original licensed animes are overshadowed by bootlegs til most decent fans can't tell the difference which is which anymore.

While i would love to physically hold my favourite original dvd anime series in a proper boxset just as the next animefan, the fanbase here just hasn't picked up enough for it to be available in your friendly neighbourhood video store XD

oh, please dun take my rants too seriously XD most of my argument points are really age-old stuff that have been talked about since the dinasour age X3

XD S'okay, maybe I get a little intense when I'm trying to make my point.^^;;
T-T Yeah, unfortunately the anime market is still very niche.
It probably will be forever possible and it's so hard to wait such a long time for something to be released on DVD.
Still, I guess it's better than nothing.

< Must stop straying now. XD

Indeed the original creators in Japan only get a small amount from their products (anime, figurines, etc)... I remember reading it somewhere before about how fansubs are helping the Anime industry as they work somewhat like an advertising firm... to show the anime to the vast otaku public first and when the original DVDs are out, people will go buy them for collection purpose or for the "specials" that caome with them. They also argued that the same goes for other anime related products like figurines, OSTs, etc.

One anime, Baccano, have like 3 special episodes only found in original box sets... I guess this is one way to make those who really like the anime to buy it.

But... though the above might be true for some of us, alot of us might not be getting the "real stuff" anywhere near us. Thus, we might not even be able to contribute to the original creators and their licencing company (after watching fansubs) even if we wanted to. For example in Singapore, the Licensed DVD box set had lousy quality, horrible looking packaging, no special goodies to attract buyers and was pricy (like about USD50 for a 24~26 episode anime)... At least they were so the last time I saw them. Now, nothing have change though I'm not sure on the quality part.

Yikes! This topic is drifting away from Slayers... I'm so sorry about me rattling on like that! =X
