Streaming anime. Aaaaaah!!!!
Link | by gant on 2008-07-08 21:05:04 (edited 2008-07-10 12:54:20)
I've got a reeeeeeeeally slow connection, and it makes watching streaming anime a total b**ch! The episode runs in fits and starts because it buffers up all the time, and what's worse, my net connection has a bad habit of breaking down unexpectedly! My question is: Is there any way to buffer the whole video all at once so that I can enjoy the episode without any interruptions? Please help meeeee T_T!!!!

edit by mod: watch language please. :/

@gant. Some info here. If you watch stream anime... well i have one enchantment for the stream website.. It's kinda like an ADD on to the browser. It speed up your stream time. Here's the link. Try it out.

http://redir.speedbit.com/redir.asp?ID=7279
0.0 if you dunno how to use it reply here.. I'll try to teach ya..

I remember that add-ons. I was using it now and it was effective. The stream gets faster when used.

When the vid started streaming, press pause and wait while speedbit takes care of streaming till its finished.
But the effect of speedbit depends at what connection speed you have so don't expect too much.

Yeah in your care, you have like an AOL connection. O.o`
I'd wait until one episode is fully loaded, before loading another.

But my suggestion is to get a better connection, haha.
What kind of connection do you have running right now on your computer anyways?

i think it has an old school connection like dial up, i understand - im a dial up old scool geezer before,
(as it is impossible to have a slow connection if u have DSL or Cable - except if you are here in the Kingdom where i work in which they can control each kbyte of transfer!).

what i do is, wait for the vid to load, and watch it after it has loaded completely. or, while loading, i use keepvid.com to DL the vid, of course u have to wait, but at least u have watched the vid in whole, and u can keep it. quality is poor though, but hey, u can see the subs and able to get the storyline, thats whats important right?

i was really desperate to get some good jdoramas, and was able to DL and get it as per this method.

not all of us have the priviledge to get a fast connection. as an otaku fan, it is truly a challenge, but im sure you can get it around in the future, happy watching!

Wow, soooooo many posters....

Thank you, everyone, for posting! I'm very gratified and blessed T_T.

Now, to answer your questions:
@Vincent: Thank you soooo much for posting that link! I'll be sure to check it out and talk to you if I don't know anything!

@DA: DA-san, you don't know how bad my connection is. You'll probably get an idea if I say that downloadin an 80MB anime episode takes 3 hours O_o.

@ricci: You have no idea when you say 'in the Kingdom where i work in which they can control each kbyte of transfer!'. I'm in one of the Kingdom's former colonies, and here the situation's worse: I pay 600 bucks per month for a connection whose maximum DL speed is 9.0 KBPS.

EDIT: Vincent-san, speedbit isn't working T_T. I tried it in Opera, but it didn't work. Then I tried it in Firefox but it still didn't work. Please help!!!! Is there a compatibility issue with Opera/Firefox? Or is there like a plug-in I need to install? Or is it because I'm hopeless?

Your best option is to get basic DSL or something better then your current connection.
It's just as bad as dial-up even,
and that makes it even hard to just browse around the internet.

Or, unless you can wait and have that tolerance, then stick with your current connection.

well, thats life. we cannot do anything about it as it is their country. while poor countries were i came from have super fast connections :) ironic isnt it?

if you are in the Kingdom right now, there are some rates given by ISP to increase the bandwith, well you have to pay more, you may talk to your ISP about it.(still i noticed it is still unsatisfactory to pay more as it is still slow as per industry standards).

have you tried wireless internet? it is a trend nowadays and quite fast.but u must have some big cash for phone credits, you may try it. if you will DL a whole lot of ep's then forget it.

small tip, some anti virus or firewall also slows down the data transfer process, disable these and hope the DLing will improve.

upgrade everything in your PC and make it lightning fast, fast PCs help crunch the data transfer (i bring my PC to the NET cafe sometimes, and big difference is there instead of using their own machines)

and hey, why DL where you can buy? im sure x-cd's are there.. going to through all the DL and your not sure if it is complete or not sure is exciting, but not practical.

which kingdom are u from anyway? as i am in ksa... :)

OK, ricci-san, I was joking when I told you where I lived. I said that I live in 'a former colony of the United Kingdom'. tHAT SAID, i'M IN iNDIA.

Well, for CDs, I can't get them for the simple reason that nobody sells them here! We're probably the most anime-illiterate developing country in the world! I know of just five people in the whole country who even know what anime is. So, CDs can be forgotten. Even if it's available on the Net, I can't buy it because the exchange rates are too damn high, and I'm not that much of an Otaku to destroy my life savings in buying anime.

Thanks for the hints, though. I'll definitely try them.

OK, now. For those of you who recommended the 'pause-and-play' fix, I'll lay down the procedure for something I tried today. Please do tell me if I'm right or wrong.

1. Open the video.
2. Press the play button.
3. As soon as the video starts playing, press the pause button.
4. Now click at any point (except the point where you paused) on the slider control beneath the window.
5. The player begins to buffer up to show that particular part. As soon as it comes up, press the pause button again, and repeat step 4 until you reach the video's end.
6. At the end, when the video begins to play, pause it again and click the beginning of the video on the slider.
7. Enjoy uninterrupted video.

Am I right or wrong? If I'm wrong, then where? If I'm right, can I implement it?

pause the video? it can be works, but why not just let it play?, take the time until video end by browsing other site, you can lower the sound volume if necessary, then you can watch it again without buffering.
you can also download it, but downloading flv ... I think torrent or direct download has better quality.
and of course support the anime by buying original dvd is always better option if available.

@ gant
I didn't understand your method when it comes to step 4.

Speedbit works on any browsers. To use speedbit, you must open a webpage that has video-based features then speedbit will activate automatically and do the rest of the loading.

Going back to streaming, here's what I do in your situation:

1. Open video
2. Press play
3. Press pause when it started buffering/loading
4. Press play after if it finished loading.

* You have slow connection am I right? Well if that's the case, the only option you have is to wait until it is finished. If I say surf the net while waiting, its up to you but it will affect the loading process.

** If you are watching anime, then here's what to do: You open one episode and load it till its finished. Then, open another episode in a new tab. That way, you can watch the episode you just finished loading while the next episode is currently loading. I really works for me but I can't guarantee if it reaches 3/4 of the next video in your situation. If you manage to work the speedbit program, thats a good thing cause it might reach at the 4/4 of the next video.

*** I understand your post about buying CDs. I realize that its not worth it to buy CDs anymore because like you, I am not that much of an Otaku. If only you can download anime by torrent but that method is useless if you don't have enough disk space to your comp.

I totally agree with Sumner, man.
That's what I did when I streamed dubbed Death Note episodes if I missed them on AS.
But my connection is better so I could browse around the internet and do whatever while waiting.

@Sumner: But, Sumner, the video player automatically pauses when it's buffering and plays when it's done.

What you guys are saying is that I let the whole video play once, then play it again? But once I hit replay, the video starts buffering all over again T_T.

gant-saab,

sumner's explanation is simple, play the vid at the window, if you see the first few frames of the vid, then pause it. u will notice at the slider that the video is still loading, just keep it going until it reaches the end. then after wards you can unpause / play it.

if it restarts again, maybe there's a problem with the browser (active x/macromedia/adobe flash) and this needs to be re-installed again.

in the end maybe its the ISP's problem. but check first if the network cables are attached properly and no twisted ones, as this can affect data transfer.
this happens when few or no data enters the PC, you thought you're connected but no data transfer is there.

for me, to check if im properly connected, i open one browser and one chat program,if my chat is ok, that means data is flowing smoothly, if not, there is a network problem.

Why don't you just watch the video play the first time, rather than letting it "play once".
Make sure you have the latest Flash Player, too.

Oh wow, I got it, I got it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my god!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just came back here after watching some Naruto OPs on YouTube. OPs that I had to DL earlier! *starts laughing maniacally*

Thank you, thank you Guys sooooo much T_T. You guys saved me from a gloomy future of endless downloading!

I tried Sumner-san and ricci-san's method by the way! So, thank you, Sumner-san, ricci-san, DA-san (who's become my favorite mod for explainin everything to me), Miko-san (who explained everything, but didn't count on my foolishness) and escape-san (who shot down my half-ass theory and saved me in the process). Besides this, thank you also to vincent-san, whose idea didn't work but whom I am neverheless grateful to.

I had one problem, though. When I tried to play D.Gray-Man on a site with Megavideo, it began buffering really slowly, then suddenly showed completion. But when I started playing it, it'd stop after a while. I guess that's a site problem, isn't it? Maybe the site runners didn't manage it well enough? The Youtube videos ran smoothly though, so that's probably it, isn't it?

*suddenly notices he's babbling* Oh no...Plz don't kill me, DA-sama. I'm just happy I got my adoption proof (on my sig) and my freedom from downloads on the same day.

Hey, ricci-san, nice Hindi, yaar.

Your internet must be timed out (this happens when the internet pushes their limits on loading large amount of data), the connection will temporarily stop, that kind of problem always happen when the connection is low.

In your case, if the Megavideo of D.Gray-Man has higher quality than youtube, it will eventually time out because it can't load so many data in such a long time.
That problem cannot be solved unless you have high connections.

Videos like youtube always starts from the beginning when you refresh the webpage. Its better to use a web browser that uses tabs (like Mozilla Firefox, CTRL+T to create tab), that way you can still watch your previous videos while you load the next video in the new tab.
