Hey guys! I want to major in astrophysics in college, so I was wondering how many years would I have to study to become a professional? |

It depends on what sort of job you want. If you want to teach at a university, you may want a PHD, which can take a long time to acquire. For a job in industry, a bachelor's degree in physics would be sufficient. I don't know about NASA's hiring requirements, but I assume graduate school will help you a lot getting a job there. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

After you done your pre-uni course, you go to university, and you will take major which when you greaduate you receive degree. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_degree After you done that you can be more profession in certain area you choose. Like what you chose, astrophysics you can take master. Summary --- about 1 to 2 years in pre-u (depends on varies country you stay in) University about 3 to 4 years (depends on your course you take) master about 1 to 2 years. ( at that time you spends about 3 to 3 hours a day to go to uni, doing research.. i think.) That's all. Basically. But this is what i know. Maybe it's wrong. =,=lll i tried to help. |

First, try an astrophysics course to see if you LIKE it or not....It may be VERY different from what you think it is.... What are your background in physics? Depending on where you live in the world, for undergraduate studies (=univeristy bachelor) you have to take physics majors and choose astrophysics courses as optional...Then you go to master and pHD in astro.... Then, what subfield of astrophysics you want to specialize in? Cosmology (theory of universe, dark matter, dark energy) or observational astrophysics? There are new emergent fields, like planetary system studies, astrobiology and astrochemistry (study of extraterrestrial lifeforms (NOT aliens! (laugh) just to study how life can evolve in non-Earth environement) and chemistry) Choose wisely, as NASA's most exciting jobs requires mastering multiple disciplines (like in engineering and math) |

From what I'm currently experiencing now, I can tell you that Engineering is not an easy course to study! And to become an astro physicist.. It really sounds tough! Good Luck! XD Byw.. Anyone here familiar with the Australian education system??? I'm currently studying in Monash University and I applied for Chemical Engineering.. I wanna major in Petrochemistry.. Do you guys know what subjects should I take??

It's good to see you have a dream, at the very least. So much for being a fireman.
If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.
