All right, I've got a question, then! Naruto says, "Sasuke wa boku no tomodachi da" in an episode. I was wondering why he didn't say "Sasuke wa boku no tomodachi DESU". I'm pretty sure the answer has to do with formality and to whom you're talking, but is that the only way to distinguish when to use it? |

Well, he said "Sasuke wa boku no tomodachi da" because there's a difference, like you said in terms of formality. Just wondering, who did he say it to? And besides, you don't really see Naruto using keigo at all. Just so you understand, keigo is the formal way of speaking, usually used when you speak to elders, or customers, and just trying to be polite. I'm sure by that you should know they always add in things like 'desu' and 'gozaimasu'. |

Actually, I think he says "ore" instead of "boku", but same difference, pretty much. That reminds me of another thing... In the new Bleach filler episodes, Lurichiyo (I think that's her name) uses the first-person plural form to speak about herself. They mention in the episodes that that's how Royalty refers to themselves. If I heard correctly, she addresses herself as "Ware-watachi" (yes, "watachi", not "watashi"), which seems to be a combination of "ware-ware" (which I understand to be the formal "we", or "us") and "watashi-tachi" (the informal "we" or "us"). Can anyone explain further? |

ok: "Sasuke wa boku no tomodachi da" you are correct that "da" is an informalization of "desu" both meaning "to be" or "to exist" |
