I wonder if there's any love out there for this title? Bought all of it last year (It was released throughout '07). My exposure came first with the news bytes about how ADV, upon licensing the show, wanted to retitle it "Shadow Star Chronicles" or somesuch (I forgot the exact title) to make it more 'marketable' to a North American audience. Thank goodness the fans cried foul and convinced them to keep the somewhat unpronounceable tongue-twister of a title, which loosely translates "The One Being Sung" It wasn't until last year, I was at a small anime con in my state that was screening this in one of its video rooms, that I got my first taste, and I literally ate it up. I just feel it had that good mix of drama, action and even a bit of lighthearted comedy and romance. I also found many of the characters likeable. If you seen it already, you know the story. I won't need to reiterate it here. However, they did fudge up the ending a little.....it was at best, slightly confusing. Probably because they threw that sci-fi/mecha twist towards the end. Since (as I stated in my opening post in the 'introductions' section, I am of the visually imparied anime fan, I took this one in its dubbed form. My only gripe.....and this seems to be a curse with ADV that they can't avoid, is some discrepancies in name pronounciations. They always pronounce Hakuoro's name as "Hakuro' for example. An annoyance, if a minor one. I guess they felt the name would be slipping around the tongue too much with the extra 'o'. As if the series' title, "Utawarerumono" is bad enough for me to pronounce. ^_^;; Other than names, I felt the delivery and emotions in the characters were brought through, and this is a big deal for me. If performances in a dub are flat ("Crest of the Stars" anyone?), I wind up snoozing through it. Anyhoo, I'm rewatching this as we speak, partly because I enjoyed it so much, and partly because I'm cosplaying 'the masked one', Hakuoro, this year.....in less than two weeks to be exact. I'm excited about that. And come on....aren't Eruruu and Aruruu adorable? I think so. |

Read above. I already put forth why I didn't watch it in subtitles. Subs = hard for me to read. I'm more open minded about dubs than most nowadays. I've been an avid anime watcher for over 12 1/2 years, and trust me, I've heard some pretty awful dubs. I did point out where I had issues with Utawarerumono's dub. I've listened to dubs by all the major NA distributors, and ADVs are by far, the spottiest. Many of their early ones were average to bad. Utawarerumono has its faults, but it's tolerable to me. To each their own.....it's all preference anyhow. Ah, and I prefer the original title also, as tough as it is to pronounce correctly. |

Yeah, I like the opening song and animation as well. I have the OP somewhere among my playlist of songs. I guess my tastes in anime are drifting away from the mainstream 'niche' stuff (ie: moe...actually never really was into moe anyways), and the likes of the uber-mainstream (Naruto, Bleach, etc....though I should admit I still buy Naruto's early eps in box sets...once they hit filler, I'm done with it), and instead trying to find more niche titles to my liking, such as Utawarerumono. Like I said earlier, it just has that decent mix of action, drama, lightheared comedy, and romance all wrapped up into 26 episodes. Most of the comedy is in the 'omake' episodes, of which there's four of them. The lives of Hakuoro and his allies when they're not out there having to defend their country. |
