Ave Maria from Cowboy Bebop is a great piece of music. Jerzy Knetig's vocals and the orchestra is amazing. In my opinion, It is the best orchestral anime song. In a close second I would say almost every orchestrated song from Evangelion. FMA has some great songs also. |

Shoji Yamashiro's OST to AKIRA (1988) hands down. Katsuhiro Otomo wanted a 'festival of anarchy' as a soundtrack to his landmark anime movie and Yamashiro-san gave him the soundtrack he wanted. The 'OST' to GUNBUSTER (1988) by Kohei Tanaka (GUNBUSTER SOUND COLLECTION) would be a close second but it's a mix of contemporary J-rock style scoring with orchestral style. Hideaki Anno got the score he wanted to this anime classic as well.... They both are great orchestral anime scores. A third is Symphonic Suite Yamamoto by Hiroshi Miyagawa from 1977. This is likely 'old school' symphonic anime music at its very best done with essentially a small 'chamber orchestra'. All 3 scores are worth being in the collections of orchestral anime music fans. |
