i just clip out a portion of the mp3 i want to use then transfer it onto my microsd card.
i also use a couple of websites to get/make my ringtones.

I use Adobe Audition 1.5 to edit audio files :)

but what I would find interesting is how to create polytonic midi files from mp3 files :)

Look, the easiest way is to use either Phonezoo or Cellfish. Google them, theyre both free websites that allow you to upload a song, cut out a portion to use as a ringtone, and then send it to your phone or share with others. Both are completely free.

If you're just moving MP3s over to your phone after chopping them to a selection, remember to drop the quality to save space. I had an 800KB ringtone in MP3(44KHz, stereo, 32-bit) before dropping the quality, and afterwards, (11KHz, mono, 16-bit), it was like ~100KB.
