I live in Canada.

I don't think we should. Fresh water supplies are low enough as it is and Canada has it's own needs. As a country it should look out for itself first and allies second. We already export oil from Alberta and possibly by 2015 Newfoundland and Labrador will be producing power and probably also exporting it the US. Not to mention that the Canadian government has pretty much given all the fish in the Grand Banks of Newfoundland to other countries. I believe Canada has exported (or, through the braindead actions of the Federal Government, given) enough resources to other countries as it is. Besides, if Canada exports water to the US what will happen when a major water shortage occurs?

Jonathon, your argument doesn't take into account the basics of economics.
You have a resource (in this case, water) that has a price based on supply and demand.
There is a limited supply, and a growing demand, so the price will grow.
The government should not (and as far as I know does NOT currently) allow the resources to run dry (literally, in this case). There must be some upper limit on the amount of ANY resource that a country can export, and it's the government's job to set it. Exporting zero water to other countries is probably not economically beneficial right now, but may be in the future.

Obviously, when there is a shortage of water, the price will go up, and people will buy much of their water elsewhere, or go thirsty, as the case may be.

I assumed WinterCherry meant exporting more than is already being exported. I never meant don't export any water at all. Closing off that would move Canada towards being a closed nation and put strain on Canada/US economic relations. I just don't think that Canada should start exporting more water than what is already shipped out when there will be a future need for it. Then again, what world power has ever thought about the future.

If Canada has good amounts of water in reserve, and can sell it to the U.S, why don't do it?...
Of course there is the issue about the whole water resources will decrease and thinking about the future. The idea is to use those resources wisely.

Kei-kun's space for stupid comments: Everything changes... we all have to move on
