Which anime has the best character development?

My pick is Crest/Banner of the Stars, the whole anime can lag at times but you know the characters without having stereo typical roles characters. Though Jinto, is a pretty big wuss

Well, I can't really think of a series at the moment, but Kamina Ayato of Rahxephon underwent some major character development ^^

He was a kinda wussy at the beginning, but then at the end of the series, he literally becomes God, with all the confidence of a celestial being (not to mention, he saves the world and turns back time :D).

Overall, i'd probably say Evangelion, though there are certainly others that warrant merit, such as The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and Full Metal Panic.

And although the original post was about anime, i'll derail for one sentence and say that the development of Gatts' character in the Berserk manga is second to none.

Evangelion definitely...followed by Rurouni Kenshin and Elfen Lied...

Hmm, can't think of one right now, but one thing's for sure, it ain't Yakitate Japan. I mean, Kawachi was actually pretty cool at the beginning, and turned into a useless wuss towards the end of the anime... T_T

I'd say Fllay of Gundam Seed. Lots of people cried when she died because she had just realised she was wrong and wanted to change. Same for Meer Campbell of Gundam Seed Destiny.

There's overall more development and characters in the manga than the anime, but the characters in Violinist of Hameln all go through dramatic changes brought on by rather complex relationships with each other. The most drastic most likely being with Flute, and she starts out seeming to be the supporting character or just a lowly sidekick. I don't want to give away spoilers but let's just say she starts out as a nameless orphan, finds her own secret legacy, and sacrifices her heart in the end. There's also a bit of Cain and Abel-esque story arc where twin siblings finding themselves on opposites of the war brewing between demons and humans. The anime is darker and much less light-hearted than the manga and suffered greatly from budget cuts during action sequences but still retains an awesome story that took years to craft and very memorable character development.

Yeah Evangelion was quite good in its character development...though some aspects were left unclear....the series did very well in 26 some episodes to develop each character...the movies for the most part put a conclusion to each of them.

Another is Kiminozo (Kimi ga Nozomu Eien)....the main characters in the short 13 episode timespan were equally developed...though i think the upcoming Haruka route series will expand on that. The original was mainly focused on Mitsuki & Takayuki.

Other series that had good character development i think are AIR, KANON, Gundam (original series, WING, & SEED)...Sailormoon was also good....though it had about 200+ episodes to do that :P

Evangelion, bar none. The character development was able to make me love Shinji, see what Rei is actually thinking, and sympathize for Asuka, my least favorite character.

For me it's NARUTO because you'll see the improvement of every character in the flow of the story in series and manga

I have to suggest Sousuke Sagara in the Full Metal Panic series. He changed from someone who is so confidence about himself, his skill with his machine (beginning of the series), to someone who hates his past, have no idea what his future is, and have no confidence with his machine (middle part of The Second Raid), and then finally works out what he wants (end of TSR).
