Firefox, Memory Consumption

I'm having problems that most Firefox users should have notice: High Memory Usage. I've googled the web to look for solutions to reduce Firefox memory consumption but most of the methods doesn't seemed to be working. My notebook only has 256MB of RAM, and Firefox is using about 40MB of it, with another 33MB of Virtual Memory. So I'm kinda asking, anyone out there knows how to reduce it's memory consumption rate? When I'm using Firefox, I always have about 30++MB of RAM left...which kinda slow down the system at times... |

yea, i do that sometimes, but when i play games in windows, i usually need firefox to look at item guides and stuff. and when i do that, the game became laggy... |

Have you limited the amount of memory your Firefox is 'allowed' to use? Also, are you using any extensions, themes or tools that add on to Firefox? Like WindowsBlinds(<--example)?    |

yea, i am using windows blinds, and a red cat blue flavor theme, ietab and flashgot for extentions...but i've already instruct WindowsBlinds not to skin Firefox. i also removed the themes, ietab and flashgot, restart the PC and then start firefox like i always did...the results, firefox used 38MB of ram...not much of a difference... so basically, i did everything that almost anyone would suggest before asking this here. for now, i reinstalled the red cat blue flavor theme, ietab and flashgot extentions and removed the windowsblind instruction for firefox.(don't say switch to Opera or IE, cause basically, i don't like them...) and uh, limiting the memory i allowed firefox to use? do you mean modifying the browser.cache.memory.capacity, browser.cache.memory.enable and browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers in about:config? if you do, i've already did that |

Well if you've already done all of that then there isn't much else you can do to limit Firefox memory usage. That's about the bare minimum right there. You could always try and find a browser which uses lower amounts of memory. |

lessee... IE: hangs 75% of the time (T_T) Opera: caused my PC to get laggy Firefox: not much lagginess, but use quite a sum of memory Flock: nope, haven't tried it yet so, i guess i have no choice but to stick with it for awhile... |

really? coz it works fine for me..in fact,itz faster than any other web servers only problem is i havent the slightest idea why the "Save Target/Picture As.." with the right-click do not work anymore in FirefoX since a while ago to save things i use explorer etc..but when im browsing & stuff/listening to music..it just has to be Firefox  |

@Rea- Firefox doesn't have a problem, it's just that Bloodymoon's laptop slows down when he's running a game and Firefox. (He has 256MB of RAM where as a normal desktop computer usually has 512MB of RAM. So you won't really notice a slowdown on a desktop PC.) |

@Jonathan : ah i see i see :P thanX 4 clearing up things..i thought that was weird for a while... my laptop seems to take forever too (with any server) i'll just stick to the desktop **does any1 happen to know how to fix the right-click "Save" feature which has dissappeared on me in Firefox? i hav tried uninstalling & re-installing but it never worked |

@REA- Firefox uses Save Link as... and Save Image as... If this has disappeared and you reinstalled Firefox then it's very strange. |

@Jonathan : yes exactly as u said..typed it wrong coz im using explorer right now (since i can't save anything at all with Firefox) but u get the point i even hav the newest updated version but it really has disappeared..tried installing the older versions that worked fine for me before as well |

@rea, lessee...here's a few solution basic stuff... 1)did you install any add ons? if you did, try and uninstall them and restart your PC. Extreme cases... 2.1)download RegSeeker(just click on Download Now, you don't really have to pay for it) 2.2)Uninstall Firefox 2.3)Go to this site and follow the instruction on using RegSeeker 2.4)restart the PC 2.5)install Firefox again. it might work this time round since we cleared the registry(it removes all those useless junk we don't need, including the previous installation of Firefox setting. so it's like you installed a brand new firefox) as for my Memory Consumption problem, think i'm going to look around for more help. cause seeing my RAM on the red is killing me...if only VRAM can act like RAM... |

If possible you might want to consider upgrading the RAM. Memory is being used quicker and quicker as the days go by, 256 megs just doesn't go as far as it used to. Of course, you probably don't need extra RAM that badly. |

yea, i am considering it for quite a while. hoping to add in 512MB more ram, but it's pretty expansive (about $80) since my notebook using DDR2 SO-DIMM memory. and you can say i pretty much need it badly...cause i'm using uh...Macromedia Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Imageready, Visual C++ 2005, Adobe Premiere, autocad and stuff like that... |

Well 512 would be more than enough. I normally run Rise of Nations, Firefox and MSN with that without any lag or major slowdowns (Occasionally it does happen, but not too often.). |

too bad a 32bit PCs can only have a maximum of 4GB of RAM...64bit PCs can have more than 256TB(terrabyte) of RAM... but i'm stingy for memory though. almost every software i use consumes lots of RAM, but not as much as Firefox does, so i was hoping i could at least reduce its memory consumption rate... |

Well other than the methods you've already tried I don't see any way of reducing it. There's only so far you can go. The only other option in your particular case would be to copy and paste the guide thing to the game into Wordpad and close out FireFox. ^^; |

yea, but i won't be able to get more info...cause i usually check a few sites at a time to, confirm it's usefulness and stuff guess i have no choice but to get a new RAM... |

| Make sure to close firefox completely every hour or so (all open windows) to help your ram problem. Firefox is notorious for memory leaks, and the longer it is open, the more memory it consumes. |
