I made up this oxymoron to try to make sense of this particular question in life:

"Life is not fair, and that's fair enough."

Of course this world is not fair. There is never enough of anything to go around. (love, kindness, money, food, weapon, etc) I think it is up to everyone to make sure that life is fair and that people get what they deserve. Now how we determine that is a different matter.

Nicely explained, Without You.

I think nowadays, we have more weapons in the world then food to feed the hungry, and that's really unfair if you asked me.
Having weapons in life is unfair [period]
I don't think life's fair, where ever you may go.
Everybody has good days and bad days, but my life now... is fair enough; I can accept a bit of unfairness (school, stuff from parents, etc.).
I guess it varies as you get older, since you'll be the one deciding how fair/unfair things may turn out for yourself.

@Dangel : Yep, they got money for war, but can't feed the poor :)

What I don't like is when we get loads of work and argue, the teachers just say "Life is unfair."
Dude, then make it fair!
Although the world will always have unfairness- if people take actions- they can make the world a "fairer" place.

Well, said, Tactic. That's why I said, it is up to all of us to make this world a fair place. I always hate people who stand around and say "the world is not fair." and do nothing to change that.

Fair or not we all have to live with what's thrown at us. Some things we have no control over. We are just going to have to accept that. It's how we survive that makes us who we are. Trying to hold onto the fleeting things in life will cause nothing but suffering and frustration. When it comes time, all we can do is step up and give it our all. Even if life beats us down, we have to stand up and keep moving.

Life is what you make it.

Life will always be unfair, as scarcity will always exist. People with better standing in life will always get a larger portion of the pie, no matter how many poor people are there. The Efficiency vs Equity system will always have to sacrifice some sort of fairness in order for the general good to benefit. For life to be fair after all, life needs to be perfect, and we know that to be false.

Life can be "fairer," but never be completely fair.

If I saw it from another view, life is fair in that it gives us things, material or immaterial, to deal with and out of sheer human ingenuity, those things can be made to help us. Poor people have brilliant ideas after all, but those ideas often don't make it out to help all. In this fairness lies unfairness, as not everyone has the means or the will to made our circumstances benefit us.

fairness is relative, life is random
what fair for you doesn't mean it's fair to someone else
being fair is not fair.

You should listen to The Cure's "Where The Birds Always Sing", from their Bloodflowers album.

According to the webster's dictionary, one of the many definition of the word fair is:
... free from self-interest, prejudice, or favoritism...
... conforming with the established rules...

@Raizoken: from your statement, you sound pretty free from self-interest and prejudice. And since you are on Gendou, you are definitely abiding to all the rules that Gendou setup, that means you are conforming with all the established rules of this forum. That surely sounds like you are a fair person to me. But according to what you said, you are not a fair person. Hmmm....

I think the world is unfair because every state has their own law stating wheather or not you can own a wolf. In most states you can't. Also I think the world is unfair because visually impaired people can't join the army. I will just join the United Rifle Association.

Look deep within your soul and you will find the spirit of the wolf.

Im not gonna lie but when I saw the name of this topic I couldnt help but laugh. I immediatly thought of "The World" From dot.hack. Anyway to the point

I believe that fairness is a fabrication of wanting justice in ones life that best suits one person. If one believes something is "fair" and to their liking, then they believe it is "fair".

If I have to use one term or the other I believe that the world is unfair due to the fact that "fair" is an opinion and the mass opinion cannot be filled on a world wide level.

Do who in the where and call me WHAT?!?!?!

@without you: indeed, that's why i said fair is relative, it maybe sounds fair to you, but there are some people out there who thought d/ling free music is not fair for the artist and musician and they see me(or us) as unfair ppl that's just an example. What i really mean is, there are always some people who think differently from the majority. that's why nothing is fair because this world and human are meant to be unfair, that's why we actually don't need to worry about how make this world fair xD

the point is: don't think how you gonna make this world become fair, think how you gonna live your life in this unfair world.

The world is fair.

Whenever you gain something, you lose something at the same time. It's just the same like energy, it's just transformed into another energy, but that doesn't mean that it's gone.

A rich man have everything in the world. Fame, money, materials, and so on. Nobody noticed that he lost something when he is rich: a trusted friend. A poor man doesn't have everything in the world. He is as poor as a beggar and doesn't have enough food to fill his stomach. But he have one thing: another beggar friend sitting next to him, always chatting about life whenever he's lonely.

Everything is balanced. It's just how you see it that makes it unbalanced.

i agree ivonne the world is fair but life is unfair

without love said "There is never enough of anything to go around. (love, kindness, money, food, weapon, etc)" but actually there is...if the island of the philippines is a giant plateau the world's population can fit the entire island considerinf every individual stands up...granted its a tight space but it fits...i heard this in a population forum last year in school

anyway every thing we need is available for the entire human race...by why? why are some countries going hungry? why are some are homeless? etc...its not the supply thats the problem its distribution.

the unequal distribution of wealth...is what makes this world unfair...and who's to blame? mankind of course...our desire for everythinf make it all unfair...to desire something greater than the other...this desire what makes this world unfair not the world...

if i have five loaves of bread and give it to five kids...thats balance, everything is fair...but waht if one is soo hungry and i gave him another but not the other four since they are not hungry is that fair or unfair?

certain circumstances like this is also part of the fair-unfair mantra

to approve of someone rather than the other...to take one's side...all these are factors of being fair and unfair...

so what is the world fair? yes in the sense that it can and hs every thing humans need to survive

is life fair? no ther will always be factors that gives favor to one than the other factors like desire, love even luck

so will life be fair? if live would be fair we'd be a single cell organism...looking the same, acting the same being the same...in a word it sucks

"Telling the world to treat you fairly because you're a good person is a little like telling a bull not to attack you because you're a vegetarian."

The world is both fair and unfair, depending on the person who views the world.

The only difference, however, is how a person views life.

What if I jump out
of this speeding jeepney?
Fly without wings
Reach for the grey-painted heaven
And out into the sea of infinity?

I think it just depends on the person thinking if the world is fair or unfair. Personally I say that the world is both unfair and fair. Life is good to me, but there are times when i wish i was dead. But that's life, kiddo's. If the world was fair, this world would be perfect. But there's no such thing as complete perfection and so the world is both fair and unfair. ... I don't think that makes really good sense, but whatever, you get my point.

So I drove into a parking lot one time and saw this person pull into a handicap parking spot. When you think handicap, you think wheelchair and whatever, right? So it just ticked me off when I saw the guy come out of the car perfectly fine. So then I ran him over.

Life is never fair. Why some people are high up there while others are down there trying to make ends meet or whatever is proof. However they are compensated in other ways. Those poorer may have a warm family while those rich may everyday come home without someone waiting for them at the door.So in the end it just depends whether you are the optimistic persons who always looks for something good in a bad situation or a pessimist who can only see the worst in everything.

I don't think it makes sense to refer to inanimate objects as "fair" or "unfair." I see the terms like "fair" and "just" as used to describe the results of purposeful actions taken by people. The most obvious reason is that you can't persuade inanimate objects to be more fair, so what's the point of calling them unfair.

For example, if someone is born unable able to walk that is neither fair nor unfair, because the cause of their disability is a bunch of chemicals that arranged randomly according to the laws of motion. By contrast if someone is hamstrung by a psychopath that is unfair because someone deliberately undertook action to do that.

It makes sense to say that people aren't fair. It might also make sense to say society isn't fair (although I'd debate that because society is so complex nobody can fully know what the results of their actions will be, so a lot of things that happen in society aren't purposeful or intended). It doesn't make sense, I think, to apply human standards to unintelligent objects in the natural world.
