Due to the nature of the topic I need help with I am unsure which section to post this in, so please feel free to move this where you wish. I'm planning to do a PSA on Open Source Software for a school project, directed at a PC audience that is running Windows. I'm trying to get a message across that open source is an alternative to proprietary software. The problem is getting this across with a time limit of 1 minute. I DO NOT want complicated words, stuff like 'vendor lock-in' would take too long to attempt to explain in a PSA. Furthermore, I want to AVOID direct comparisons, not just because I dont want to turn my PSA into a 'Windows vs Linux' or something like that, but also would interfere greatly with time limit. Also, searching seems to help me find plenty of reasons for corporate businesses to switch to Open Source (less money for similar or better reliability/support), but I need to find reasons that everyday users would WANT to switch to Open Source, and find perhaps statistics to back up them. I want to avoid a 'since it works corporately it can work for you' message because it doesn't really connect to the viewers IMO. Basically I need help coming up with reasons for everyday Windows-users on PC to at least read up on open source as a possible alternative, without going into too much detail. |

hmm...i'm not sure if this will help. i'm a linux user myself, although i don't use it much these days, but i'll see what i can help you with... why users would want to switch to open source(from my personal point of view):
these are just the few that i think of anyways. there should be more, but i just can't remember. |

I've never run into this much but I believe that Open Source also cuts down on cost. (I don't know if this would be included in Bloodymoon's "Less resources" statement.) Side Note: This would be better suited for the Programming section. |

can i also add something in here?... i think that the reason behind this as well is because most common user are students and does not have a job of their own... i think i passed by a book and happen to read about the one who designed the Linux (which is a popular OPen Source)... He designed it for student programmers coz he realized that some programmers who have potentials cannot do some programming coz of the cost they have to undergone to... and he understands this coz he too was a programmer... *just shared my thoughts...
