Microsoft Paint Error
Link | by Nekorin on 2006-12-02 22:55:26
I was exited to continue my sprite comic after a long time, but I am severely distressed because a problem that has arisen is now preventing me from continuing. An error prevents me from making the background color transparent, which is essential to the process.

As you can see, the drop-down menu says the draw opaque function is on, but the tool box says it is off. If I click on either, they will both switch, and it never turns on! I have no idea how this happened, but I need to fix it! I really need help, and I don't want to hear complaints about microsoft. I know that paint is a cheap art program, but it works for what I need. I have tried to install another one, but the attempt failed miserably.

I don't want to hear anything other than how to fix this. Please help.

Oh My GOD!!
Well, I don't use Paint to Edit and make my pictures to be transparent now.

I use Microsoft Proto Editor for making my pictures transparent (background transparency and image semi-transparency) after I use Microsoft Paint. I use that technique 6 years ago.

Try to use Adobe Photo Editor, Corel Draw, or Macromedia Fireworks.

If you don't have any money, use the GIMP.

I tried to download gimp before, then it said I couldn't install it without downloading something else, and then I couldn't find it and things became a big mess. I just want to fix this problem. :(

@Nekorin- I can't help you with the MS Paint thing, but GIMP would be better to use. GIMP comes in two parts and instructions tell you how.

@Nekorin, to be able to use GIMP properly, you'll need to install the GTK

1)firstly:uninstall GIMP.

2)go tho this site:http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

3)download and install:GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment (version 2.8.18, for Windows 2000 and newer)

4)reinstall GIMP

that should fix the problem

Find me at Twitter and Google+

I'll try to install it again, but just in case I still want to use paint after trying it, is there a microsoft help expert I can email or something?

Are you sure you didn't get your buttons mixed up? Do your sprites have a transparent background to begin with? The button you want selected is the bottom one, not the top one, so your screen shot looks normal to me.

But it conflicts with the drop down menu, which says that the transparent feature is on. Notice the check? If I were to click the button, the check on the menu would dissapear, when it is supposed to be in sync. This is not normal.

BTW, I tried gimp. It was confusing, I didn't like it. And the sprites backgrounds are that weird blue color.

Opaque means the opposite of transparent, and you have both the opaque button and Draw Opaque option checked, so, maybe I'm confused about something...?

The GIMP is confusing in that it is different from many other image editing tools, but it's not impossible. However, it's understandable that you would rather use a simpler program, I guess I'm just obsessed with computers @_@

In order for a part of an image to be transparent in Paint, it must have a white background color. Paint can't make other colors transparent, as far as I can tell.

Paint can most certainly make colors transparent, I've done it before. You have to right-click with the eye droper on the color you want to make the background. Hmm, allow me to make a new screen cap....

I'm sorry if I messed something up, but does this appear to be properly screwed up?

Then, I tried with white like you said, and something REALLY weird happened.

What should I do?

I'm obviously not an expert on Paint, forgive me ><

If you're using an image format besides BMP, I guess there's a chance that the compression makes the pixels not exactly white (or whatever the BG color is). However, since I can't seem to recreate your program's behavior using the screen caps provided above, that can't be the case.

I'm running out of ideas :x I don't know of anyone else who uses MS paint, so I don't have anyone to refer you to either >< Sorry about that.

I can write a tutorial for how to do Sprite-comic type tasks in the GIMP, but that's all I can do... sorry I couldn't solve your problem...

You don't need to be too upset, it's nice that you've been trying to help all this time. :) And maybe someone else will be more familiar with that. (I'm not sure if a gimp tutorial will be necessary, but thanks for the offer and maybe I'll take you up on it if things don't go as planned.) Maybe I should contact a microsoft employee, but I don't know where to go for that.

I tried changing it to a .bmp file but it made no difference, unfortunately.

2 Nekorin:
Well if you want a Paint substitute and don't want to try GIMP, you should try Paint .NET which is free and has many interesting features (not like Photoshop of course, but surely better than that old Paint thing...)

Take a look here: _http://www.getpaint.net/index2.html
This are it's requirements:
Minimum System:
* Windows XP (SP2 or later),
or Windows Vista,
or Windows Server 2003 (SP1 or later)
* .NET Framework 2.0
* 500 MHz processor (Recommended: 800 MHz or faster)
* 256 MB of RAM (Recommended: 512 MB or more)
* 1024 x 768 screen resolution
* 200+ MB hard drive space
* 64-bit support requires a 64-bit CPU that is running a 64-bit version of Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows Server 2003, and an additional 128 MB of RAM

Hope it helps, best regards...

I found that the transparent feature didn't work when I dragged items, but it did when I copied and pasted. Thus, I was able to make this.

Please, I still don't like this problem, so could someone tell me how to contact microsoft?
