Driver glitch
|
I installed a Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 GPU a few days ago and sometimes, I get this weird rainbow on my screen. It isn't too severe since it is just a small patch of the screen but it is irritating and yes, I checked the connection and installed the appropriate drivers. The other thing is that when I move my mouse to the side of the screen and it touches the corner, it disappears. It has happened ever since I installed the GPU and I tried adjusting my monitor so I know that it isn't the problem.
Please visit my message board, I only have 3 members now and I would appreciate it. It is at s10.invisionfree.com/the_world_2.

Are you sure that its because of the FX5200? My friend uses one and she doesn't have any problems with it. For the rainbow part, you could be a little more specific about what the rainbow looks like. Small patch is a TAD vague. Does it change colours? Moves? Words on the 'rainbow'?. The mouse thing, i've never heard of it, so I can't help you there. Try a new mouse to see if the problem is the mouse your using. It could of got damaged when you were installing the video card ~somehow. ~Good luck!~ |

Questions: 1. Does your mouse pointer REALLY disappear when you move the pointer mouse to the corner where that "Rainbow" is located? 2. Does it appears again if you move at the center of the screen again after moving it to the corner of the screen where that "Rainbow" is located? If the answer is (1) Yes (2) Yes, Oftenly the problem is that the pin attachments of your monitor to your Graphics adapter (video card). Sometimes if you don't really attach it property, some RAINBOW colored at the corners of your screen appears (oftenly at lower left corner and lower right corner). The problem of this is due to loose pins attach to the holes of your Graphics adapter, wire problems on your monitor (sometimes breaks, short, or loose wires), and Monitor (RGB) Color and Graphics Card Malfunction. More on Technical Monitor Problems... But if the answer is (1) Yes (2) No, There is many possibilities that cause those things. Commonly the "Driver Errors". Some Drivers of a Graphics adapter have bugs or have missed the function to be done in order to run your Graphics Adapter in your OS. Software Problem Difficulty... Try to contact the manufacturer or the store where you purchase your Graphics Card and use your hardware warranty. |

Honestly, I'd bet $10 that just about anyone here so far doesn't really know how to deal with this problem. The first smart step you should take is to go to nvidia's website and download and install the latest drivers. I actually know exactly what you're describing though, because 6 months ago before my old computer died I was using an FX 5200 just like you, and I had a very similar problem. In my case I found that reinserting the card tightly and positioning the monitor cable just right fixed it the first time. The second time however it didn't....(but that was because an electron gun in my monitor was dying) If installing the latest drivers doesn't work, try these two things: 1) If you have another monitor, plug it into that monitor. 2) If you have another computer, try inserting it into another computer (don't bother with installing the drivers on the other computer, we're only looking to see if it shows a rainbow on the screen) If #1 fixes it, then that just means your monitor is dying, so buy some other cheap one. If #2 fixes it, then more than likely that means something else in your computer is causing a problem, like the pci/agp port may be damaged (try another port if possible then), etc. Two last questions: 1) What are your display properties currently (refresh rate, resolution, color depth, etc.)? 2) Is it an evga or bfg graphics card, or some other brand 5200? (word of advice, the 5200 is a very.....underpowered graphics card in today's world, you may wish to consider upgrading unless it's an older computer)

most likely conflicting drivers wondows seems to feel that even though you already got a driver that if its not theirs they feel ou still need it so keep the driver you installed and delte the one microsoft forced you to get you can do that in add remove programs and making sure updates box is checked |

Oh this might also be another reason. If it's not software or driver issue, the last thing you can say is that it's a hardware issue. If i can recall, the FX series ran very hot and the fx5200 if it is PCI connect or AGP should only have a heatsink. From what you described it's a "new" gcard you just bought and your computer was a pre-built. I'd check the airflow towards the gcard see during idle and load how hot is gets by touching the heat sink or download a monitoring program. The FX series ran hot so i do not know a correct value for temps so yea post your results and let people be the judge of that. Well here's a link to a hardware temp monitoring program http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php |

Quick guess. Pluck your monitor cable (the one connected to graphic card) tighter. Or just move the cable a bit. Using CRT right? the big fat monitor i guess. i have same problem before. i think it's your cable problem. but you need to check what they say above also. |
