If you cosplay as a character from a manga/a anime in an artbook version, do you still think it's cosplay? The character doesn't use the clothes either in the manga or anime.

If you think that because you arent portraying a character from a manga or anime means its not Cosplay you are mistaken...

Cosplay is an english contraction for "Costume"+"Play" meaning anything that involves you dressing up as another character/person is Cosplay... You could say its another word for "masquerade"

but for the record... If you want to be recognized as that character... you are better off wearing what the majority remembers what he/she is always wearing...

Yes, Cosplay doesn't mean Anime/Manga only. It applies to any time in which you dress up to look like a character from Anime, Manga, Video Games, Movies (Real, CG or Animation) or even a book (In which the character is described.)

Yeah, what Lu Bu said.
It's best to try and match the preferred cosplaying character as best as possible.
