Sense of Self
Link | by fourier on 2006-10-12 17:53:56
Do any of you ever ponder how real we are? I accept the trillions of cells that make up my body to be perfectly real, and the cells and interactions between them in my brain to be completely legitamate, but how real is "me"? This thing that is wondering about its own existence, is it really there? Are all of these things that my fingers and body are doing just the result of a coplex (VERY COMPLEX) reaction between a bunch of molecules? Or is there a thing inside all of that that is making something happen. Granted, all the choices that the thing makes are a result of previous experiences' affect on it, but is there actually something in there making a choice?

Prove to me my existence.

I'm not emo.

I agree with Gendou this is more like philosophical or something.

What's is the thing that makes you real?, is it sense?

What if what we're feeling isn't right, If we are being cheated by everything we see, touch, smell, taste, hear?. (this sounds like The Matrix hehehe)

I think that the reason you exist is because you're able to think about it, you're able to DO something... things that don't exist cannot DO stuff, or the things that exist cannot do anything with the ones that don't.

But what if we all don't exist but we can interact with each other for the reason that we all have the same characteristic of "non-existential" beings? and we live in a non-existential dimension were we are able to DO things?

Ok, now, I confused myself. -__-u

Isnt this the kind of things that "if the tree falls in forest and nobody is hearing it, does it make sound when it falls?" Indeed, philosophical this is.

But what is the idea, of questionizing yourself? Arent you happy with your life, so you want to get rid of it, or what? Im happy with my life, so i dont need to know the reason why i exist or how do i exist. I dont care if im not actually in charge of my actions but its something that had been decided long ago. Life is what you think it is, be pleased with that.

Hmmm.....nice question....
It's the same as "when we see our shadow on the mirror, which one is real, the shadow or us ?"
Anyway if you believe you are real, then you real. And if you don't, and you aren't real.
I think it's our environtment that make us 'real'.
But this just my opinion. Any other ?

Shinji: W-Who's that...? Who...?
Shinji B: Who? Shinji Ikari.
Shinji: Th-That's me.
Shinji B: I am you. This self incorporates another self. The self has always been composed of two selves.
Shinji: Two?
Shinji B: Yes. The self which is observed, and the self which observes itself. To expound, there is the Shinji Ikari that exists in your mind, the Shinji Ikari in Misato Katsuragi's mind, the Shinji Ikari in Asuka Soryu's mind, the Shinji Ikari in Rei Ayanami's mind, and the Shinji Ikari in Gendou Ikari's mind. All are different Shinji Ikaris, but each of them is a true Shinji Ikari.

* * * * * * * *

Rei: Who am I?
Rei B: You are Rei Ayanami.
Rei: But who are you? Are you Rei Ayanami as well?
Rei B: Correct, I am that which is recognized as Rei Ayanami.
Rei C: We are all things that are known as Rei Ayanami.
Rei: How could all of these be me?
Rei B: It is simply because others call us Rei Ayanami, that is all.
Rei C: You possess a false soul and a fake body. Do you know why?
Rei: I am neither false nor fake. I am simply me.
Rei C: No, you are an empty shell with a false soul, created by a man named Gendou Ikari. You are just an object that is pretending to be a human. See, look deep within yourself. Do you perceive the almost intangible, invisible presence that lurks inside your darkest dreams? It is there that your true identity lies.
Rei: No, I am me. I became myself through the instrumentality of the links and my relationships with others. I am formed by interaction with others. They create me as I create them. These relationships and interactions serve to shape the patterns of my heart and mind.

Gogo Evangelion =^.^=

Now then, if we are created by others, what happens if we're on a stranded island by ourself?

Now i got confused.....
But i think, if we stranded on an isolated island just by ourself....we will go nuts.
Think about that. We want to talk to someone but there's noone except us, so we'll start talking to ourselves. Sign of broken mind (crazy)....

I agree 110% with Nekomimi (^_^)

Those kind of questions have an underground meaning which is that you're not comfortable with your existence or something. The idea is to make good use of what we got (or we think we got), our lives and our free will. At least that's my humble opinion.

Haven't you ever had one of theose moments where you look in the mirror and think: "Whoa, that's me? That IS me... So he is me."
And everything makes sense for a brief second.

Those moments scare me...

if we're stranded on an island on our own, i think the interactions with the nature will shape us. like, if you're attacked by a tiger/elephant/anything, you'd fight/run, then you gained experience and get stronger :P

existence of self...people always ask, why do i exist? whats the reason behind my existence? is happiness the only thing im looking for?

to me, i dont need the reason to exist. i dont have to be happy all the time. pain and suffering make you human, like what we always hear when we talk about this existence thingy. so, i'll just have to be content of my life. and just live life. life is complicated. if its not, then its not life

Sounds like my current essay.

Doubting your own existence would be a contradiction according Descartes (of "I think, therefore I am" fame). It would seem that I could doubt whether you lot out there exists, but I cannot doubt my own existence. For all I know I am all there is (a view that is called solipsism), but even then I exist. It's just that you are figments of my imagination. However, each and every one of us could prove to ourselves that we exist. But to persuade why other people exist? Not that easy in philosophy.

Do I exist? Yes. Why? I don't give a flying monkeys. I'll just get on with the things that need doing and stuff. Thinking..too..much. Head...hurts...*Slumps to floor*

Wait a minute, are you sure about that?

You are here, therefore you exist. Whether it be in one form or another is irrelevent.

You need a reason to be sad. You don't need a reason to be happy. The secret to happiness is to face the fact that the world is horrible.

I agree completely with Nekomimi.
You don't have to think hard about who or what we are, if you're thinking about it, maybe you're just bored or your mind is empty right now. If you're stressed about your work, or you're enjoying your time, you wouldn't think about these things.

I myself, always think that, I existed because this world needs me. Maybe it sounds kinda cocky, but that's me, full of pride ^^

I believe that my mind, my soul, exists. I believe in that it is my own and that I am an individual. I think differently from others and believe in different things. I perceive my surroundings in my own unique way, whether they are real or not. Even if my body and everything around me does not truly exist, I have a mind that believes them to be real and is interacting with them as such. What makes me who I am-my personality, emotions, thoughts, and beliefs-exists, so therefore I exist.
