So, who all has seen this anime movie, Akira?

i saw it a while ago, bought it used from gamestop for $10. I had my hopes up when i watched it, only to be dissapointed by the...crappy ending.

after i returned the game to get a refund (i could do that becuase it was used) i searched around and found meaning to the ending of the movie. though its still confusing.

so, has anyone else seen this movie (not the manga) if so, what did you think of the ending?

I didn't think Akira was very special. The animation and the plot were pretty good, but like you said, I thought the ending was kind of weak and left too many unanswered questions.

yup...actually it has a moral lesson though.
"what is it to a man if he gains the whole world but loses his own soul."

I preferred the manga to the anime. The anime's story was perhaps too convoluted really, and certain aspects of it changed dramatically from the manga. The manga tells a better story. Still, it was good at the time. I can't help but think that it has been over-rated story-wise though. Actually it would interesting what current animators could do with a story like Akira actually. It was ground breaking for its time.

Wait a minute, are you sure about that?

I heard the directory in Akira is also the director on the movie Steamboy, as shown on Animax.

Well... Akira also helped the Anime industry blossom in the west so you got to give it some credit... At its time it was a Marvel of the Animation Industry...

Story-wise... yep... its the type that leaves you hanging...

The movie is one of the best.
In fact, a lot say it still is the #1 anime film every created.
If not that, it'd be his second creation, Steamboy.
Both are nice, but yeah, Akira is very well done.
I struggled with it a bit, since it was made in the late 80's and I was used to the current anime style in drawing, but the animation and just the movie itself was enjoyable.
Might not happen, but I thought of a remake. XD
Anyways the movie was really well done and I liked the ending (ED).

That movie seriously hurt my brain. I watched it thrice and still had issues with grasping its meaning. It's still a classic, though.

I've thought about watching Steamboy - is it good?

Steamboy is not good at all.
It's a freaking masterpiece!
The movie also took quite some time to make.
Overall, check it out!

Akira gave me a headache, but at least it was worth it since Johnny Yong Bosch was in the 2001 english dub. I want to try to watch it subbed someday.

I just saw this and I really gotta ask.
Am I the only one who doesn't like this movie?

I mean, I read the manga about 4 years and that was epic.
Seriously, there is no other word to describe the manga.
It does everything that the movie doesn't.
It has character development and an actual plot.
I understand that they only had 2 hours to pick and choose from 1800 pages of material but it just seems like they picked all the wrong things to animate.

Maybe I need someone who hasn't read the manga explain to me why they find the anime so great.
Cause to me, the movie story is practically crap compared to the orignal.

Hmm, maybe it was because it was made about two decades ago? :P
I don't really know. There's an anime series with this title?

Akira is considered the greatest anime film of all time by anime critics mostly due to the fact that it opened the door to the genre in the west. Some even argue if it wasn't for Akira's influence, anime may have never made it to North America.

The film was a technical marvel in animation back in the day. The highly advanced animation & detail was nothing like it (again back in the day). Some say it was this way of animating that influenced what we see today. It wasn't some 'simple' movie...the elements in the film contained things from social unrest, the nuclear holocaust, psychological behaviour, corruption & the will to have more power. This was grown-up stuff, not your everyday kiddy cartoon.

Granted i agree that the manga is far superior in terms of storytelling. The movie only had 2 hours or so to basically summarize 6 volumes of material. For the most part i thought they did a pretty good job on it. The movie mostly used the latter half of the manga, the last volume in particular. So it left very little for character development which the film lacked.

Don't worry Jow-san you aren't the only one that didn't like the film, there are many of you around the world. Whatever the reason may be. However love it or hate it you can't deny the impact Akira had done in forging the anime industry to where it is nowadays. For that i think it deserves everyones respect.

Incredibly, I've never, ever seen it.

I really should.
