Hi everyone! I'm currently an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme student, and we're doing our Extended Essays. I chose Physics because I want to becaome a pilot someday. Unfortunately, my topic was rejected because of lack of resources (I wanted to study Aerodynamics and the effects of the shape of the plane), so I got stuck with this one: Does the frequency of light affect the resolution of the eye, and does it affect the way the natural colour of a pigment is seen? Honestly, it's the first time I'm doing this, and I really don't know how to start it. I mean, I've done researches and stuff, and I'm trying to do paperwork --- like its introduction and abstract and ahypothesis --- but I just don't know where to start. Am I supposed to experiment first? How will I do this? I've thought of using red and green lights stuck together, and looking at it from a distance, with people of different kinds of eyesights, and sizes of lightbulbs... is that okay? How do I dig deeper into a human eye without actually extracting one or using x-rays? Ack, I'm only 18... and I'm new to this thing, as opposed to my classmates who's done GCSE work like this... I've done something like this in my old school, but we were a pair, and it didn't need to be FOUR THOUSAND WORDS; it was just 1500... *sigh* I hope someone can help me! -michiyo-

You might find a little info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light and here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pigment

I hope this could help you, it's about the different wavelength and frequency ranges for the various colors, I mean, it shows you the different values of frequency for each color (the way our eye notice them). http://www.usbyte.com/common/approximate_wavelength.htm ![]() ![]() |

To test resolution of the eye, couldn't you just put someone under a red light and record how well they can make out objects, then put that person under a violet light and do the same. I dunno, just speculating...

Thank you SO much for all your help, guys... but I've gone to those sites already... In fact, I've printed them out! =D @engineer: Yup, I've thought of that, actually. My problem is how to tell who's doing a good job and who isn't. What if one person's wearing glasses and the other one has a 20/20 vision? You know... those variables and all... But thank you, really. =D

Actually, that could help you stretch your essay out. Do the experiment on someone who has 20/20 (for sure), someone who is near sighted, and someone who is far sighted. You would then have 3 different types of eyes to write about.

You might have this already, but here is info on the photoreceptor cells in the eye: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photoreceptor
